Arthroscopic treatment of popliteal cysts: clinical and magnetic resonance imaging results.

PURPOSE: This study examined the functional and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) outcomes of popliteal cysts with combined intra-articular pathologies that were treated arthroscopically by decompression and a cystectomy through an additional posteromedial cystic portal. METHODS: From January 2003 to March 2008, 31 patients were treated with a modified arthroscopic technique to decompress a popliteal cyst. The connecting valvular mechanism was found in all cases at the posteromedial compartment through the anterolateral viewing portal, and it was corrected by resecting the capsular fold throug

Tolerogenic protocol for intestinal transplantation.

Transplantation is standard therapy for many patients suffering from kidney, liver, or heart failure. In contrast, transplantation of the intestine remains a high-risk procedure, which is performed in a minority of patients with short bowel syndrome. The difficulty is the strong alloimmune response caused by intestinal grafts and the complications of the profound immunosuppression. We tested a new clinical immunomodulatory protocol using donor-specific blood transfusion, a strategy that was popular before the introduction of cyclosporine and was recently shown to promote development of regulat

Recent advances in preoperative and intraoperative nuclear medicine procedures in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism.

Although bilateral neck exploration is traditionally considered as the treatment of choice in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (HPT), several surgical techniques of limited neck exploration have been proposed over the last 10 years in primary HPT patients with a high probability to be affected by a solitary parathyroid adenoma. The availability in recent years of highly sensitive and accurate preoperative imaging modalities, particularly the parathyroid scintigraphy with 99mTc-MIBI and high resolution neck ultrasonography, allowed to increase the rate of primary HPT patients as candid

[Comparison of quantitative data from two-dimensional echocardiography and anatomical examination in mitral stenosis].

This prospective study was undertaken to assess the results of 2D echocardiography in the assessment of valvular and subvalvular lesions in mitral stenosis. The echocardiographic findings (E) were compared with peroperative and laboratory anatomical examination of the excised valve (A). The following criteria were compared: 1) planimetry of mitral valve surface area, 2) mobility of the anterior leaflet, assessed anatomically by the flexibility of the tissue, and echocardiographically by the amplitude of early diastolic excursion, 3) length of anterior and posterior leaflets, 4) presence of cal

Preoperative Hemoglobin Decline Is Not an Independent Prognostic Factor for Mortality in Older Hip Fracture Patients.

AIM: To evaluate whether preoperative hemoglobin (Hb) decline independently predicts mortality in older hip fracture patients and whether commonly used Hb-drop thresholds add prognostic value beyond established clinical risk factors. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of consecutive patients aged ≥ 65 years undergoing surgery for acute hip fracture at a level I trauma center (2019-2024). Preoperative Hb drop was defined as the difference between emergency department admission Hb and pre-anesthesia Hb. Six Hb-drop thresholds (≥ 1.0, ≥ 1.5, ≥ 2.0, ≥ 2.5, ≥ 3.0, ≥ 4.0 g/dL) were

Relationship of preoperative low muscle mass with postoperative loss of independence after hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgery in elderly patients: a single-center retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Numbers of patients undergoing hepato-biliary-pancreatic (HPB) surgery are increasing worldwide. However, elderly patients may experience loss of independence (LOI) postoperatively due to the marked invasiveness of surgical procedures. This retrospective cohort study aimed to investigate clinical characteristics of elderly patients including preoperative low skeletal muscle mass before HPB open surgery for malignancy, and the association between low skeletal muscle mass and LOI postoperatively. METHODS: Patients aged 65 or older who underwent open curative resection for HPB maligna
