Combination syndrome: classification and case report.

Combination syndrome (CS) is a dental condition that is commonly seen in patients with a completely edentulous maxilla and partially edentulous mandible with preserved anterior teeth. This syndrome consists of severe anterior maxillary resorption combined with hypertrophic and atrophic changes in different quadrants of maxilla and mandible. This makes it a challenging condition in dentistry that requires significant experience along with advanced restorative and surgical skills. The causes of maxillary bone resorption and ways to correct it are discussed in this article. Conventional treatment

What the dentist should know about a patient with HIV/AIDS.

Chances are good that oral health care providers will treat someone with diagnosed or undiagnosed HIV during their careers. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that 650,000 to 900,000 U.S. residents are living with HIV infection, more than 200,000 of whom are unaware of their infection. As with any medical condition, it is possible for a dentist to do great harm by ignoring systemic manifestations of HIV. On the other hand, dentists who are ignorant of modern HIV disease management often request unnecessary medical consultations resulting in dental treatment delays. Since 1

A Review of the Application and Progress of the Socket Shield Technique in Implant Restoration.

The Socket Shield Technique (SST) is a method that aims to preserve the alveolar bone and reduce postextraction bone resorption by retaining part of the tooth root; despite significant advancements in immediate implant placement and bone regeneration techniques in implant dentistry, alveolar bone resorption after tooth extraction remains a major clinical challenge, with current methods failing to prevent bone remodeling completely. This review aims to summarize the application progress of SST in implant restoration, discuss its advantages and limitations, and analyze key issues in its clinical

Obesity in children: a challenge that pediatric dentistry should not ignore--review of the literature.

The link between childhood oral diseases and obesity is demonstrated by their increasing prevalence, potential cause and effect relationship, the significant deleterious effect on the child's present and future oral and systemic health, and the influence of obesity on conscious sedation. The purpose of this manuscript is to review the literature on the relationships between childhood oral diseases and obesity, and between obesity, breathing and conscious sedation. While some reports suggest a connection between caries and obesity others do not, and it is unclear if they correlate or they just

A Review of Early Childhood Caries: Risk Factors, Management, and Policy Recommendations.

Initially, the American Academy of Pedodontics and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) jointly addressed severe tooth decay related to bottle use by issuing a statement on Nursing Bottle Caries. However, over the next two decades, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) expanded its understanding, recognising that early childhood caries (ECC) resulted from various inadequate feeding practices, leading to the adoption of the broader term "ECC" to better reflect its complex causes. This review discusses ECC: its prevalence, risk factors, effects, prevention, early detection, and

A video feedback-based tobacco cessation counselling course for undergraduates-preliminary results.

BACKGROUND: Hungary has one of the highest rates of tobacco use and decayed, missing and filled teeth in Europe, and the number of lung cancer-related deaths per annum is amongst the highest globally. As it is estimated that the rate of smokers who see their dentist or physician annually is about 70%, to involve all healthcare providers in tobacco intervention seems to be a promising strategy to reduce tobacco use in countries like Hungary. Such an intervention should obviously include the dental health team. It has already been suggested by experts on this topic that instruction in tobacco us

[Dental alveolar bone and dental arch remodeling in children: orthodontic diagnosis and treatments based on individual child arch development].

The etiology of malocclusions basically involves both congenital and environmental factors. Malocclusion is the result of the abnormal development of the orofacial complex (including tooth, dental alveolar bone, upper and lower jaws). Early orthodontic interceptive treatments involve the elimination of all congenital and environmental factors that contribute to the malformation of the orofacial complex, as well as interrupt the deviated development of the orofacial complex and the occlusion. Early orthodontic interceptive treatments mainly aim to use children's growth potential to correct abno
