Validity and reliability of the Behavior Problems Inventory, the Aberrant Behavior Checklist, and the Repetitive Behavior Scale-Revised among infants and toddlers at risk for intellectual or developmental disabilities: a multi-method assessment approach.

Reliable and valid assessment of aberrant behaviors is essential in empirically verifying prevention and intervention for individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD). Few instruments exist which assess behavior problems in infants. The current longitudinal study examined the performance of three behavior-rating scales for individuals with IDD that have been proven psychometrically sound in older populations: the Aberrant Behavior Checklist (ABC), the Behavior Problems Inventory (BPI-01), and the Repetitive Behavior Scale - Revised (RBS-R). Data were analyzed for 180 betwe

Temperament in Infancy Predicts Internalizing and Externalizing Problem Behavior at Age 5 in Children With an Increased Likelihood of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Differences in temperament have been linked to later mental health. Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have an increased likelihood of experiencing such problems, including anxiety, depression, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and oppositional defiant disorder; yet, relations between early temperament and later mental health are not well understood. In this paper, we assess the relationship between temperament in infancy and internalizing and externalizing behavior at age 5, in 178 children at an increased likelihood of being diagnosed with ASD (i.e., younger siblings of chi

Problem and pro-social behavior among Nigerian children with intellectual disability: the implication for developing policy for school based mental health programs.

BACKGROUND: School based mental health programs are absent in most educational institutions for intellectually disabled children and adolescents in Nigeria and co-morbid behavioral problems often complicate intellectual disability in children and adolescents receiving special education instructions. Little is known about prevalence and pattern of behavioral problems existing co-morbidly among sub-Saharan African children with intellectual disability. This study assessed the prevalence and pattern of behavioral problems among Nigerian children with intellectual disability and also the associate

Model of structural equations on the perception of aspects of school life and substance consumption as predictors of problem behavior in adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Problematic behavior and drug use are behaviors of social concern, especially in adolescence. There are school factors that ca … life and alcohol, tobacco and cannabis consume with the presence of Problematic Behavior. RESULTS: Problem behavior was predicted by alcohol, tobacco and cannabis consume, and binge drinking. Different aspects of school life differentially predicted problem behavior and drug use. Sense of challenge was observed as having a reciprocal predictive relationship with …

Developmental trajectories of aggression, prosocial behavior, and social-cognitive problem solving in emerging adolescents with clinically elevated attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder symptoms.

Middle school is a critical yet understudied period of social behavioral risks and opportunities that may be particularly difficult for emerging adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) given their childhood social difficulties. Relatively few ADHD studies have examined social behavior and social-cognitive problem solving beyond the elementary years, or examined aspects of positive (prosocial) behavior. The current study examined how middle school students with clinically elevated ADHD symptoms differ from their non-ADHD peers on baseline (6th grade) and age-related cha

A continuous glucose monitoring and problem-solving intervention to change physical activity behavior in women with type 2 diabetes: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes technology has the potential to provide useful data for theory-based behavioral counseling. The aims of this study are to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of a continuous glucose monitoring and problem-solving counseling intervention to change physical activity (PA) behavior in women with type 2 diabetes. METHODS: Women (n=29) with type 2 diabetes were randomly assigned to one of two treatment conditions: continuous glucose counseling and problem-solving skills or continuous glucose monitoring counseling and general diabetes education. A family process model of marital hostility, parental depressive affect, and early adolescent problem behavior: the roles of triangulation and parental warmth.

This study examined a family process model of early adolescent problem behavior in a community sample of 416 two-parent families. With family systems theory, a model was developed that suggests (a) marital hostility and parental depressive affect are conjoint familial stressors for youths, (b) youth triangulation mediates the association between marital hostility and adolescent problems, and (c) parental warmth buffers the negative effects of parental depressive affect and youth triangulation. With structural equation modeling, youth-perceived triangulation mediated the association between mar…

Behavioral health risks in perinatally HIV-exposed youth: co-occurrence of sexual and drug use behavior, mental health problems, and nonadherence to antiretroviral treatment.

In a sample of perinatally HIV-infected (PHIV+) and perinatally HIV-exposed, uninfected (PHEU) adolescents, we examined the co-occurrence of behavioral health risks including mental health problems, onset of sexual and drug use behaviors, and (in PHIV+ youth) nonadherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART). Participants, recruited from 2007 to 2010, included 349 youth, ages 10-16 years, enrolled in a cohort study examining the impact of HIV infection and ART. Measures of the above behavioral health risks were administered to participants and primary caregivers. Nearly half the participants met st

Psychosocial, emotional and behavioral problems, quality of life, and mental health care seeking behaviors among children and adolescents in Jordan: a national school-based survey.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of psychosocial, emotional, and behavioral problems and their symptoms among children and adolescents in Jordan, assess their quality of life, and examine mental health help-seeking behavior. METHODS: A large-scale school-based national survey was conducted in Jordan among children and adolescents aged 8 to 18 years (grades 3 to 12) from the host and refugee populations, utilizing a multi-stage stratified cluster sampling technique to select a nationally representative sample. Two versions of structured questionnaires were used: proxy pa

Disadvantaged neighborhoods, birth weight, and problem behavior in five- and six-year-old pre-school children: Evidence from a cohort born in Amsterdam.

RATIONALE: Low birth weight has been found to increase the problem behavior of children. Yet, little attention has been given to adequately account for the impact of the child's neighborhood on this relation. The residential neighborhood is a choice, based on factors that are usually not observed that may also influence birth weight and problem behavior. OBJECTIVE: Using a model that accounts for such endogeneity of both neighborhood choice and birth weight, we have analyzed behavioral problems in 4210 pre-school children between the ages of 5 and 6, birth weight, and neighborhood status, sim…

The reproduction of child maltreatment: An examination of adolescent problem behavior, substance use, and precocious transitions in the link between victimization and perpetration.

Growing evidence suggests that maltreatment is reproduced across generations as victims of maltreatment are at an increased risk for maltreatment perpetration. Unfortunately, little information about mediating pathways exists to provide an explanation for why maltreatment begets maltreatment. We use the number of types of maltreatment experienced to predict later maltreatment perpetration and then examine two developmental pathways that may serve as bridges between maltreatment victimization and perpetration: adolescent problem behaviors and precocious transitions to adulthood. With prospectiv…

In conclusion, our results suggest that, especially in girls, neonatal DEX has a programming effect on the HPA-axis and on the ability to adjust to the environment.

Complex solutions for a complex problem: A meta-analysis of the efficacy of multiple-behavior interventions on change in outcomes related to HIV.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this meta-analysis was to examine the success of multiple-behavior interventions and to identify whether the efficacy of such programs depends on the number of recommendations prescribed and the type of outcomes measured. METHOD: We conducted a synthesis of 136 research reports (N = 59,330) using a robust variance estimate model (Tanner-Smith et al., 2016) to study change between baseline and the first follow-up across multiple-behavior interventions, single-behavior interventions, and passive controls. RESULTS: Multiple-behavior interventions were more efficacious

A Within-Person Test of Mediated Pathways between Victimization, Internalizing Problems, and Antisocial Behavior in Early Adolescence.

Different theoretical models propose different orderings of victimization and internalizing problems in forming mediated pathways to antisocial behavior. The strain or stress model proposes that victimization triggers internalizing problems which in turn lead to antisocial outcomes; in contrast, the symptoms-driven model proposes that internalizing problems trigger victimization which then leads to antisocial outcomes. There have been few rigorous tests of these pathways, and it is unclear whether they differ for different antisocial outcomes (i.e., aggression versus general rule violation). T

Latent profile transitions in bullying role behaviors and associated mental health problems among Chinese adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Existing research indicates that bullying roles often co-occur in different profiles. However, evidence on how these profiles transition over time and how such transitions relate to later mental health remains limited, especially in Chinese adolescents. This study examined latent profiles and transition patterns of bullying role behaviors and their associations with subsequent psychological outcomes. METHODS: This study involved a total of 5477 adolescents in China, surveyed on two occasions. Participants completed questionnaires assessing bullying role behaviors at both T1 and T2

Family function and problem behaviors among preadolescents: A mediation model of generalized trust beliefs and peer attachment.

Preadolescence marks the critical onset period for problem behaviors that shape later adjustment. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether family function is associated with preadolescent problem behaviors through the sequential mediation of generalized trust beliefs and peer attachment, while exploring potential gender differences in these pathways. A total of 371 preadolescents (Mage = 11.58 ± 0.58) completed self-reported questionnaires. Results of latent variable structural equation modeling showed that family function was negatively associated with internalizing problems large…

Executive Functions and Behavior Problems in Children Exposed to Child Sexual Abuse: The Moderating Role of Attachment Security.

While executive functions are known predictors of behavior problems in normative samples, they remain understudied among sexually abused children. Little is known about potential moderators, such as attachment security, which may influence the association between executive functions and behavior problems. This study explored attachment security as a moderator in the association between executive functions and behavior problems in school-aged, sexually abused children in Quebec, Canada. The sample included 212 children aged six to twelve. Teachers completed questionnaires on behavior problems,

[Research progress on early life protective factors for the developmental trajectories of children's internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems].

The long-term upward trend in children's internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems has become increasingly prominent, exerting profound impacts on their physical growth and mental health, and has emerged as a major public health concern of global significance. Multiple factors, including genetics, psychosocial conditions, family environments, and early life conditions, influence these behavioral problems. Notably, the early life stage is a critical period for an individual's physical, cognitive, and socio-emotional development. The multiple protective factors inherent in this stage p
