Comparison of Pain Within 24 h after Uterine Artery Embolization with Tris-Acryl Gelatin Microspheres Versus Gelatin Sponge Particles for Leiomyoma.

PURPOSE: To compare acute pain after uterine artery embolization (UAE) with tris-acryl gelatin microspheres (TAGM) versus gelatin sponge particles (GS) for leiomyoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a single-institution, retrospective study. Between July 2008 and November 2016, 101 consecutive patients with symptomatic uterine leiomyoma underwent UAE with the same protocol for post-procedural pain. GS was employed with near-stasis endpoint for the first 49 patients, whereas TAGM was used with limited endpoint for the next 52 patients. Post-UAE pain levels were compared between both groups wit…

The effect of patient-practitioner communication on pain: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Communication between patients and health care practitioners is expected to benefit health outcomes. The objective of this review was to assess the effects of experimentally varied communication on clinical patients' pain. DATABASES AND DATA TREATMENT: We searched in July 2012, 11 databases supplemented with forward and backward searches for (quasi-) randomized controlled trials in which face-to-face communication was manipulated. We updated in June 2015 using the four most relevant databases (CINAHL, Cochrane Central, Psychinfo, PubMed). RESULTS: Fifty-one studies

The Analgesic Effect of Extended Reality (XR) on Acute and Postoperative Pain in Children: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Acute and postoperative pain in children is often undertreated, with effects on patient comfort and postoperative recovery. Extended reality (XR) interventions offer non-pharmacological pain management by distracting patients from discomfort. While effective for procedural pain, its impact on prolonged pain episodes remains underexplored. OBJECTIVES: To systematically review and meta-analyze findings from previous studies on the efficacy of XR interventions in managing acute and postoperative pain in children, compared to standard care. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Studies involving chi…

[Breastfeeding, an analgesic technique for painful care that can be used in rehabilitation?].

Pain management in infants is crucial during painful care. This work evaluates the effect of breastfeeding on procedural pain, measured by the Neonatal Infant Pain Scale score. A rapid review included nine randomized controlled trials (RCT) on PubMed, comparing breastfeeding with other techniques (maternal contact, sucrose, etc.). Breastfeeding significantly reduces pain compared with maternal contact, and is comparable in efficacy to sucrose. Despite methodological limitations, this simple and effective technique could be integrated into pain management in pediatric rehabilitation. Further st…

Sugaring the pill: ethics and uncertainties in the use of sucrose for newborn infants.

Sucrose is widely used for the management of procedural pain in newborn infants, including capillary blood sampling, venepuncture, and vascular cannulation. Multiple randomized controlled trials have demonstrated that sweet-tasting solutions reduce behavioral responses to acute painful stimuli. It has been claimed that sucrose should be a standard of care in neonatal units and that further placebo-controlled trials of sucrose are unnecessary and unethical. However, recently published data cast doubt on the analgesic properties of sucrose. We review this new evidence and analyze the philosophic…

Clinical features associated with adverse events in patients with post-pericardiotomy syndrome following cardiac surgery.

Postpericardiotomy syndrome (PPS) may be associated with tamponade and pericardial constriction that may require procedural intervention. The aim of this study was to identify clinical features associated with adverse events requiring procedural intervention in patients with PPS. A total of 239 patients who developed PPS after cardiac surgery were monitored for 12 months. PPS was diagnosed if 2 of the 5 following findings were present: fever without infection, pleuritic pain, friction rub, pleural effusion, and pericardial effusion (<60 days after surgery). The primary end point was the develo

Anticipated and Actual Pain Intensity in Patients Receiving Intravitreal Injections: A Cross Sectional Study.

AIM: To compare patients' anticipated pain intensity and actual pain experienced during intravitreal injection. DESIGN: The study used a quantitative, cross-sectional design. METHODS: A single-centre study was conducted in a group of 115 patients. Data were collected using medical records and the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS). Pain intensity was rated twice. RESULTS: The findings did not support the hypothesis that anticipated pain intensity would be higher than actual pain during intravitreal injection. Anticipated pain intensity on the NRS scale (range 0-10) was 2.58 ± 2.16; actual pain in

Chronic Pain Syndromes: Myofascial Pain Syndrome.

Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is a regional musculoskeletal pain disorder characterized by trigger points within the muscle or fascia. There are no universally accepted diagnostic criteria. Diagnosis currently is based on a physical examination finding of at least one localized trigger point that, when palpated, recreates the pain at the site or produces pain away from the site in a referral pattern. MPS is thought to be related to sustained muscle contraction from under- or overuse. This syndrome commonly coexists with other chronic pain conditions, including fibromyalgia. The difference bet

CT-guided cryoablation for palliation of secondary trigeminal neuralgia from head and neck malignancy.

BACKGROUND: Facial pain is a common presentation secondary to tumoral invasion, rendering an individual unable to perform basic activities such as eating and talking. Cryotherapy may be appropriate in patients seeking immediate pain relief for trigeminal neuralgia (TN) near the end of life with its minimal invasiveness and procedural morbidity. While cryosurgery has been effectively demonstrated in the treatment of primary TN, this study is unique as it is the first documented use of CT guidance and treatment of secondary TN using percutaneous cryoablation. AIM: To perform and report experien
