Lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) caused by Chlamydia trachomatis serovar L1-3 was formerly a rare sexually transmitted disease in western countries. Recently, an outbreak of LGV and LGV proctitis among men who have sex with men (MSM) was reported from the Netherlands. PURPOSE: Changes in morbidity pattern of ulcerative colitis have created a need to update understanding of the course of the disease.
METHOD: A follow-up study was done of relapse rates and progression of inflammation in 571 non-selected patients with ulcerative and indeterminate colitis.

Topical therapy with amino salicylate enemas is the treatment of choice for proctitis, proctosigmoiditis, and left-sided ulcerative colitis. Adjunctive sulfasalazine therapy is often required. Relapse rates of 80 per cent can be expected within 3 months of discontinuing therapy.

Fecal stream diversion is not an uncommonly used procedure in the treatment of symptomatic Crohn's disease of the rectum. The role of Chlamydia trachomatis in infections of the male genital tract is reviewed. The organism is an important cause of non-gonococcal urethritis, post-gonococcal urethritis and epididymitis, but does not appear to play a major part in the pathogenesis of chronic abacterial prostatitis or in proctitis in anoreceptive homosexual men.

We report the case of a 48-year-old, leukodermic female diagnosed with ulcerative proctitis for 4 years and latent tuberculosis. She was allergic to salicylates and had a minor allergic reaction to infliximab (rash, vertigo, and headache). Thereafter, she started azathioprine (2.5 mg/kg/day). We report an HIV-infected person who was treated for lymphogranuloma venereum cervical lymphadenopathy and proctitis in Croatia in 2014. Infection with a variant L2b genovar of Chlamydia trachomatis was detected in a cervical lymph node aspirate. A prolonged course of doxycycline was required to cure the infection.
