Cervical mucus and serum samples were obtained from 42 anovular women and 20 normal ovular fertile women (controls) for the determination of prolactin concentration by a solid phase radioimmunoassay. To define the role of adrenal hormones on PRL secretion, we investigated 28 women by administering i.v. 0.25 mg. ACTH (h 8.00) every 45' for 135' to better evaluate any relationship between enhanced adrenal steroidogenic activity (both glycoactive and androgenic) and PRL secretion. The present study was designed to investigate the efficacy of bromocriptine in reducing serum prolactin (PRL) levels and in decreasing the size of PRL-secreting microadenomas. Bromocriptine, 5.0 mg, was administered daily for 2 years of 17 women who had galactorrhea, hyperprolactinemia, and hypocycloidal polytomographic evidence suggestive of a pituitary microadenoma. The authors review any possible correlation between prolactin and growth hormone in human breast cancer. They find neither a significant relationship between growth hormone and breast cancer nor between prolactin and growth hormone. In many cases however, prolactin levels may be used as a neoplastic marker. The excess of prolactin could originate either in a tumor factor stimulating its secretion by the hypophysis or in an ectopic production of the hormone by tumor tissue.

Treatment of 5-day cyclic rats with 10 or 100 microgram estradiol benzoate on the day of estrus induced a luteal phase in all animals studied. On the other hand, an injection with 1 microgram estradiol benzoate given on the same day failed to induce pseudopregnancy. When 10 mg progesterone were injected on the day of estrus, about 50% of the rats became pseudopregnant, whereas most of the remaining rats had a 6-day cycle. BACKGROUND: Prolactin is secreted from the pituitary gland and other organs, as well as by cells such as lymphocytes. Prolactin has an immunostimulatory effect and is associated with autoimmune diseases that are characterised by abnormal B cell activation, such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We report the case of a 45-year-old woman suffering from anti-hepatitis C virus (HCV) positive chronic active hepatitis and amenorrhea-galactorrhea syndrome due to a prolactin-secreting pituitary microadenoma. She was repeatedly given alpha-interferon for hepatitis, and a concomitant normalization of plasma prolactin levels, with disappearance of the related symptoms, was observed during the treatment. Further experience is needed in order to verify the therapeutical effectiveness of alpha-interferon on prolactin-secreting tumors.
