A prophylactic effect of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) stretching on symptoms of muscle damage induced by eccentric exercise of the wrist extensors.

Stretching with proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) is frequently used before exercise. The prophylactic effect of PNF on symptoms of muscle damage induced by eccentric exercise of the wrist extensors was examined in this study. Twenty-eight healthy males were randomly divided into the PNF group (n = 14) and the control group (n = 14). PNF was used before eccentric exercise induction in the wrist extensors. All subjects were tested to examine muscle damage characteristics including sensory-motor functions at baseline, immediately, and from 1st to 8th days after the exercise-induced

Central projection of proprioceptive afferents arising from maxillo-facial regions in some animals studied by HRP-labeling technique.

20 ICR mice (adult females) were used for analyzing the axonal projection of the trigeminal mesencephalic tract neurons and 10 Japanese shrew-moles for analyzing that of the snout proprioceptive neurons. The HRP-labeled axons were found to be ipsilaterally terminated in the trigeminal motor nucleus, supratrigeminal nucleus and trigeminal main and spinal tract nuclei, lateral pontine-medullary reticular formation, vagal dorsal motor and hypoglossal nuclei and the lamina V of the C2 spinal cord segments. No HRP-labeled axons were found in the facial and solitary nuclei and the cerebellum. Also,

The effect of foot posture on static balance, ankle and knee proprioception in 18-to-25-year-old female student: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND & PURPOSE: Afferent input from the sole affects postural stability. Cutaneous reflexes from the foot are important to posture and gait. Lower-limb afferents alone provide enough information to maintain upright stance and are critical in perceiving postural sway. Altered feedback from propreoceptive receptors alters gait and patterns of muscle activation. The position and posture of the foot and ankle may also play an important role in proprioceptive input. Therefore, the current research aims to compare static balance and ankle and knee proprioception in people with and without flexi…

Development and reliability of a measure evaluating dynamic proprioception during walking with a robotized ankle-foot orthosis, and its relation to dynamic postural control.

BACKGROUND: Proprioception is important for proper motor control. As the central nervous system modulates how sensory information is processed during movement (sensory gating), proprioceptive tests performed at rest do not correlate well with performance during dynamic tasks such as walking. Proprioception therefore needs to be assessed during movement execution. OBJECTIVES: 1) To develop a test evaluating the ability to detect movement errors during walking, and its test-retest reliability; 2) to quantify the relationship between proprioceptive threshold (obtained with this new test) and per…

Trigeminal Proprioception Evoked by Strong Stretching of the Mechanoreceptors in Müller's Muscle Induces Reflex Contraction of the Orbital Orbicularis Oculi Slow-Twitch Muscle Fibers.

OBJECTIVE: The mixed orbicularis oculi muscle lacks an intramuscular proprioceptive system such as muscle spindles, to induce reflex contraction of its slow-twitch fibers. We evaluated whether the mechanoreceptors in Müller's muscle function as extrinsic mechanoreceptors to induce reflex contraction of the slow-twitch fibers of the orbicularis oculi in addition to those of the levator and frontalis muscles. METHODS: We evaluated in patients with aponeurosis-disinserted blepharoptosis whether strong stretching of the mechanoreceptors in Müller's muscle from upgaze with unilateral lid load indu

The Effects of External Lower Limb Weight or Pressure Application on Human Knee Joint Proprioception in Resting and Fatigue Conditions: A Randomized Trial.

Objectives: Knee proprioception is affected by many biomechanical and physiological factors. Often, during training, rehabilitation, or specific sport requirements, weight or pressure is applied to the foot. However, it is not clear if such applications affect knee proprioceptive acuity. This study examined whether the application of an external weight (3 kg) or of pressure (120 mmHg) at a level above the ankle joint would affect knee proprioception in an open kinematic chain movement in resting or fatigue conditions. Methods: Participants included active young men (n = 7) and women (n = 15), …

Lower limb pointing to assess intersegmental dynamics after incomplete spinal cord injury and the associated role of proprioceptive impairments.

BACKGROUND: Disorders in the recovery of gait strategies in individuals with incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI) suggest difficulties in controlling lower limb intersegmental dynamics, which could relate to proprioceptive impairments. To probe discrete aspects of lower limb interjoint coordination, we present here a novel protocol to assess lower limb motor strategies and evaluate the influence of proprioceptive impairments following SCI. METHODS: Twelve able-bodied controls and 16 participants with SCI performed lower limb pointing to three targets that involved combined hip and knee flexion
