An analysis of digital rectal examination and serum-prostate-specific antigen in the early detection of prostate cancer in general practice.

BACKGROUND: Prostate cancer is now the commonest cancer in men and the second commonest cause of death from cancer. However, general-practice-based research on prostate cancer remains scanty. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to examine the acceptability of digital rectal examination (DRE) and serum-prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in the early detection of prostate cancer in a general practice setting. Another aim was to ascertain the incidence of prostate cancer among 50-79-year-old men in the solo practice. METHODS: We conducted an opportunistic, prospective, population-based study involving men with n…

Methods of early detection of prostate cancer: the role of prostatic specific antigen, transrectal ultrasound and digital rectal examination.

PSA has significantly influenced the management of prostate cancer. Early detection of clinically significant cancer has been increased by combining PSA and digital rectal examination. PSA has been used as a prognostic factor for patients with local disease and as a monitoring test for patients undergoing curative therapy for localized prostate cancer.

Biomarkers of Prostatic Cancer: An Attempt to Categorize Patients into Prostatic Carcinoma, Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, or Prostatitis Based on Serum Prostate Specific Antigen, Prostatic Acid Phosphatase, Calcium, and Phosphorus.

Prostatitis, BPH, and P.Ca are the most frequent pathologies of the prostate gland that are responsible for morbidity in men. Raised levels of PSA are seen in different pathological conditions involving the prostate. PAP levels are altered in inflammatory or infectious or abnormal growth of the prostate tissue. Serum calcium and phosphorus levels were also found to be altered in prostate cancer and BPH. The present study was carried out to study the levels of PSA, PAP, calcium, and phosphorus in serum of patients with Prostatitis, BPH, or P.Ca and also to evaluate the relationship between them

Prostate specific antigen in a community-based sample of men without prostate cancer: correlations with prostate volume, age, body mass index, and symptoms of prostatism.

The correlation between both prostate specific antigen levels (PSA) and prostate specific antigen density (PSAD) and age, prostate volume parameters, body mass index, and the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) were studied in a community-based population. A sample of 502 men aged 55 through 74 years was evaluated, excluding those with a serum PSA above 10 ng/ml, those with biopsy proven prostate cancer, and those who had previously undergone a prostate operation. PSA and PSAD did not correlate with the body mass index. Weak correlations were found between PSA and age (r = 0.25; P < 0.

The prognostic significance of prostate-specific antigen dynamics during abiraterone therapy in patients with high-risk metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer.

To evaluate the prognostic significance of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) decline depth and duration in patients with high-risk metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer (mHSPC) undergoing abiraterone treatment. We retrospectively analyzed data from 153 high-risk patients with mHSPC receiving first-line abiraterone therapy. Patients were stratified based on PSA dynamics during treatment. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and Cox proportional hazards regression were used to assess the associations between PSA decline patterns, PSA progression-free survival (PSA-PFS), radiographic PFS (rPFS), a…

Dual 177 Lu-Prostate-Specific Membrane Antigen and 177 Lu-DOTATATE Therapy in Metastatic Castration-Resistant Prostate Cancer With Neuroendocrine Differentiation.

We present an 87-year-old man diagnosed with prostate cancer and neuroendocrine differentiation, posttherapy results to consecutive 177 Lu-prostate-specific membrane antigen and 177 Lu-DOTATATE. Despite hormonal therapy and chemoradiotherapy, the patient progressed rapidly, and multiple liver and bone metastases showed regression after 177 Lu-prostate-specific membrane antigen and 177 Lu-DOTATATE treatment. Prostate cancer with neuroendocrine differentiation is resistant to treatments; however, treatment with the combination of 177 Lu-DOTATATE therapy may be promising.

Diagnostic performance of Gallium-68 prostate-specific membrane antigen positron emission tomography-computed tomography in intermediate and high risk prostate cancer.

Gallium-68 prostate-specific membrane antigen positron emission tomography-computed tomography (Ga-68 PSMA PET/CT) is an imaging modality that promises improved sensitivity and specificity of detection of prostate cancer lesions based on their increased uptake of PSMA-based radiotracers. It remains an emerging modality that has not yet been endorsed in the guidelines for the management of prostate cancer pending more established evidence to prove its efficacy. The objective of the study is to assess the value of Ga-68 PSMA PET/CT in the detection and localization of patients diagnosed with int

Influence of Men's Attitudes toward Health and Health Insurance on Prostate Specific Antigen Screening for the Early Detection of Prostate Cancer.

INTRODUCTION: The majority of guidelines currently recommend shared decision making for men 55 to 69 years old who are considering prostate specific antigen screening, and proceeding based on values and preferences. Qualitative studies have shown that negative attitudes toward physicians, health care and general health can influence decisions to pursue prostate specific antigen screening. We evaluated the impact of men's attitudes toward health and health insurance on prostate specific antigen screening. METHODS: A retrospective secondary data analysis was conducted of men 55 to 69 years old

Abiraterone Alone or in Combination With Enzalutamide in Metastatic Castration-Resistant Prostate Cancer With Rising Prostate-Specific Antigen During Enzalutamide Treatment.

Purpose Enzalutamide resistance could result from raised androgens and be overcome by combination with abiraterone acetate. PLATO ( ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT01995513) interrogated this hypothesis using a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled design. Patients and Methods In period one, men with chemotherapy-naïve metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer received open-label enzalutamide 160 mg daily. Men with no prostate-specific antigen (PSA) increase at weeks 13 and 21 were treated until PSA progression (≥ 25% increase and ≥ 2 ng/mL above nadir), then randomly assigned a…
