A Systematic Review of Clinical Psychophysiology of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders: Does the Obsession with Diet Also Alter the Autonomic Imbalance of Orthorexic Patients?

(1) Background: A new mental illness is attracting the attention of researchers and mental health professionals. Orthorexia nervosa (ON) is a possible new mental disorder, the main symptom of which is an obsessive and insecure focus on healthy foods and consequent compulsive behaviors. There is a common consensus among researchers that ON is considered partly overlapping with obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCDs). (2) Methods: MEDLINE and Scopus were searched for articles published in the last 10 years regarding the psychophysiological aspects of OCD and ON. Eight studies met the eligibility c

Subjective Perception of Recovery and Measured Olfactory Function in COVID-19 Patients.

This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate self-rated olfactory dysfunction in relation to measured olfactory function after partial or complete subjective recovery in individuals with a history of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection. A total of 186 individuals (aged 5-62 years) with a history of COVID-19 infection were included. Visual analogue scale (VAS) ratings for olfactory function (before, during, and after infection) and age-appropriate psychophysical olfactory test scores (odor threshold and odor identification: "Sniffin' Sticks" for adults and both "Sniffin' Sticks" an

Simultaneous measurement of intra-epidermal electric detection thresholds and evoked potentials for observation of nociceptive processing following sleep deprivation.

Sleep deprivation has been shown to increase pain intensity and decrease pain thresholds in healthy subjects. In chronic pain patients, sleep impairment often worsens the perceived pain intensity. This increased pain perception is the result of altered nociceptive processing. We recently developed a method to quantify and monitor altered nociceptive processing by simultaneous tracking of psychophysical detection thresholds and recording of evoked cortical potentials during intra-epidermal electric stimulation. In this study, we assessed the sensitivity of nociceptive detection thresholds and e

Olfactory Dysfunction Following Moderate to Severe Traumatic Brain Injury: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Reports of smell loss following traumatic brain injury (TBI) are a well-documented but understudied phenomenon. Given the broad consequences of olfactory loss, we characterized psychophysical olfactory dysfunction in individuals with moderate to severe TBI using systematic review and meta-analytic methods. METHODS: Following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) protocol, five databases (PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Scopus) were reviewed for studies investigating olfactory dysfunction in persons with moderate to severe TBI.

The role of dark adaptation in understanding early AMD.

The main aim of the paper is to discuss current knowledge on how Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) affects Dark Adaptation (DA). The paper is divided into three parts. Firstly, we outline some of the molecular mechanisms that control DA. Secondly, we review the psychophysical issues and the corresponding analytical techniques. Finally, we characterise the link between slowed DA and the morphological abnormalities in early AMD. Historically, DA has been regarded as too cumbersome for widespread clinical application. Yet the technique is extremely useful; it is widely accepted that the psyc

From suppression to stereoacuity: a composite binocular function score for clinical research.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to validate a binocular function score that is based on common clinical measures of visual function, providing a more complete analysis of binocular outcomes, against laboratory-based dichoptic tests of threshold stereoacuity and depth of suppression. METHODS: Scores on a composite binocular function (BF) score derived from clinical stereoacuity measures (Randot Preschool Stereoacuity Test and Randot Butterfly) and the Worth 4 Dot test were determined in adults (n = 20; age 24.8 ± 7.2 years) and children (N = 77; age 8.3 ± 1.7 years) with abnormal binocular vision fr

Rise and fall of the two visual systems theory.

Among the many dissociations describing the visual system, the dual theory of two visual systems, respectively dedicated to perception and action, has yielded a lot of support. There are psychophysical, anatomical and neuropsychological arguments in favor of this theory. Several behavioral studies that used sensory and motor psychophysical parameters observed differences between perceptive and motor responses. The anatomical network of the visual system in the non-human primate was very readily organized according to two major pathways, dorsal and ventral. Neuropsychological studies, exploring

Masking of sounds by a background noise--cochlear mechanical correlates.

In the search for cochlear correlates of auditory masking by noise stimuli, we recorded basilar membrane (BM) vibrations evoked by either tone or click signals in the presence of varying levels of background noise. The BM vibrations were recorded from basal regions in healthy cochleae of anaesthetized chinchilla and gerbil. Non-linear interactions that could underpin various aspects of psychophysical masking data, including both compression and suppression at the BM level, were observed. The suppression effects, whereby the amplitude of the responses to each stimulus component could be reduced

Auditory nerve frequency tuning measured with forward-masked compound action potentials.

Frequency selectivity is a fundamental cochlear property. Recent studies using otoacoustic emissions and psychophysical forward masking suggest that frequency selectivity is sharper in human than in common laboratory species. This has been disputed based on reports using compound action potentials (CAPs), which reflect activity in the auditory nerve and can be measured in humans. Comparative data of CAPs, obtained with a variety of simultaneous masking protocols, have been interpreted to indicate similarity of frequency tuning across mammals and even birds. Unfortunately, there are several iss

Brain activity for chronic knee osteoarthritis: dissociating evoked pain from spontaneous pain.

Chronic pain is a hallmark of osteoarthritis (OA), yet little is known about its properties and representation in the brain. Here we use fMRI combined with psychophysics to study knee pain in fourteen OA patients and nine healthy controls. Mechanical painful pressure stimuli were applied to the knee in both groups and ratings of evoked pain and related brain activity examined. We observe that psychophysical properties and brain activation patterns of evoked pain are essentially the same between OA patients and healthy subjects, and between worse and better OA knees. In OA patients, stimulus-re…

Sequential classification in glaucoma diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Large-scale screening in glaucoma diagnosis is expensive and time consuming. Sequential classification strategies can provide an effective combination of time-efficiency and diagnostic accuracy for glaucoma screening. METHODS: In a cross-sectional clinical study, a sequential diagnostic strategy, based on several psychophysical and electrophysiological tests, was evaluated on measurements from 595 eyes from 310 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma, and 419 eyes from 213 control subjects (age range 18-70 years in each group). Patients and controls successively underwent up to

Spectral sensitivity in patients with dysthyroid eye disease.

The majority of patients with dysthyroid eye disease have an acquired colour vision defect. However, no psychophysical investigation of selective damage to colour or flicker pathways has been carried out. In order to clarify the nature of the visual pathology, we have used a psychophysical technique (spectral sensitivity) to selectively stimulate the chromatic and achromatic mechanisms. Spectral spots of size 1 degree presented at a rate of 1 Hz on a bright 1000 td white background are detected by the chromatic mechanism but a rate of 25 Hz reveals the achromatic mechanism. Fifteen patients (2

Depth-dependent noise interference reveals scene-structure constraints on contour completion.

Contour completion allows perception of whole objects despite fragmented input, yet the mechanisms that support this process remain debated. Purely local, bottom-up models posit that oriented edge signals propagate across gaps according to two-dimensional (2-D) principles of good continuation, predicting that interference from luminance noise should depend only on local image geometry. In contrast, scene-based frameworks - including accounts that incorporate 3-D surface layout - propose that completion depends on a global analysis of depth, occlusion, and surface assignment, predicting stronge

VR HMD color calibration and accurate control of emitted light using Three.js.

Virtual reality (VR) can be used to design and create new types of psychophysical experiments. Its main advantage is that it frees us from the physical limitations of real-life experiments and the hardware and software limitations of experiments running on two-dimensional (2D) displays and computer graphics. However, color calibration of the displays is often required in vision science studies. Recent studies have shown that a standard color calibration of a head-mounted display (HMD) can be very challenging and comes with significant drawbacks. These drawbacks include the need to completely d

Detection of moving objects using motion- and stereo-tuned operators.

A person moving through the world must be able to identify moving objects in order to interact with them and successfully navigate. While image motion alone is sufficient to identify moving objects under many conditions, there may be some ambiguity as to whether an object is stationary or moving, depending on the object's angle of motion and distance from the observer. Adding a measure of depth from stereo cues can eliminate this ambiguity. Here we show that a model using operators tuned to image motion and stereo disparity can accurately locate moving objects and distinguish between stationar

Galileo's Dagger.

Galileo found that fine lines on a balance scale dazzled his eyes and were unreadable. So he used a grid of fine wires instead and ran his dagger across it, counting the number of auditory clicks. This is the first known experiment on sensory substitution.

Crowding--an essential bottleneck for object recognition: a mini-review.

Crowding, generally defined as the deleterious influence of nearby contours on visual discrimination, is ubiquitous in spatial vision. Crowding impairs the ability to recognize objects in clutter. It has been extensively studied over the last 80 years or so, and much of the renewed interest is the hope that studying crowding may lead to a better understanding of the processes involved in object recognition. Crowding also has important clinical implications for patients with macular degeneration, amblyopia and dyslexia. There is no shortage of theories for crowding-from low-level receptive fiel
