Psychosocial adjustment of 20 patients with Treacher Collins syndrome before and after reconstructive surgery.

Eight males and 12 females (mean age, 12.2 years) with Treacher Collins syndrome were studied longitudinally before and after craniofacial reconstruction. The patients and the parents of the 16 patients who were children were interviewed by a psychosocial team (child psychiatrist, psychologist and social worker) 6 months before and 1, 2, 3 and 4 years after surgery. The patients' facial appearance (Hay's Rating Scale), intellectual ability (Wechsler scales), self-esteem (Piers-Harris Self-Concept Scale for Children) and adaptive functioning (DSM III) were measured. The findings indicate that w

Race Differences in the Effect of Subjective Social Status on Hostility and Depressive Symptoms Among 9- to 11-Year-Old Children.

PURPOSE: Research shows that subjective social status (SSS) is a salient determinant of health. However, there is little research on SSS-related group differences on psychosocial outcomes among children. The purpose of the current study was to determine if associations between psychosocial functioning and SSS in children varied as a function of racial groups. METHODS: We used a series of regression models to examine associations between SSS and measures of hostility and depressive symptom severity in groups of Black and White children. All analyses controlled for objective markers of family- …

Improving antenatal risk assessment in women exposed to high risks.

Antenatal substance use and related psychosocial risk factors are known to increase the likelihood of child protection involvement; less is known about the predictive nature of maternal reflective functioning (RF) in this population. This preliminary study assessed psychosocial and psychological risk factors for a group of substance dependent women exposed to high risks in pregnancy, and their impact on child protection involvement. Pregnant women on opiate substitution treatment (n = 11) and a comparison group (n = 15) were recruited during their third trimester to complete measures of RF (Pr

Is neuropsychology a psychosocial science?

Many early investigators of brain-behavior relationships focused their investigative efforts on the psychiatric implications of brain damage … ting diseases of adulthood). Our investigations of brain-behavior relationships and their impact on psychosocial functioning have attempted to expand upon and chart a somewhat different (subtypal) course for this area of study. One clearly evident conclusion of these efforts is that neuropsychology is a psychosocial science. Some implications of our findings for research …

The psychosocial evaluation of the hospice patient.

A psychosocial evaluation of a patient is an important first step in the provision of care to hospice patients and their families. It serves as a guide for intervention, communicates social work concerns to other caregivers, and articulates important features of the patient/family system from an interdisciplinary perspective. The psychosocial evaluation addresses the patient's problems in a historical framework by identifying important developmental features as they pertain to the tasks of dying. It identifies physical resources and needs and evaluates the patient's psychosocial functioning, w…

Cognitive and motor features in elderly people with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Although elderly people will represent one third of the bipolar population in a few years, data about cognitive and motor features in these patients are very scarce. The aim of this study was to compare the cognitive and motor functioning between elderly euthymic patients with bipolar disorder (BD) and healthy controls, as well as to determine the degree of correlation with psychosocial functioning. METHODS: Euthymic older adults with BD (n=20) and healthy controls (n=20) were evaluated with traditional clinical instruments and measures of exposure to psychotropic drugs and extrap…

Mindfulness-Based Interventions in Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Mindfulness-based interventions may be beneficial psychosocial treatments for improving the health and well-being of patients with inflammatory bowel disease. This article reviews eight studies, assessing seven psychosocial interventions, which include mindfulness and/or meditation components. Strongest effects of the interventions were found in quality of life and anxiety/depression, with inconsistent or minimal changes in other psychosocial areas, such as perceived stress and in disease-related outcomes and other physiologic functioning. Efficacy of a WeChat mini-program-based self-management intervention for bipolar disorder: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) often results in poor functional outcomes. Digital interventions offer a scalable solution, but evidence from China is scarce. This study evaluated the efficacy of "Mood Calm", a WeChat mini-program-based self-management intervention, for improving psychosocial functioning, quality of life (QoL), and clinical outcomes in BD. METHODS: In this single-blind randomized controlled trial, 81 euthymic patients with BD were assigned to either WeChat mini-program "Mood Calm" intervention plus online group psychoeducation (n = 49) or a standard care control group (n = …

Chronic pain and subjective memory problems are dynamic risk factors for functional decline: An ACTIVE longitudinal study.

Chronic pain is highly prevalent in older adults and is associated with elevated risk for disability and dementia. Subjective memory problems (SMPs) - self-rated memory difficulties - are also common and may serve as early indicators of functional decline. This study examined associations between SMPs and cognitive, physical, and psychosocial functioning among older adults with and without chronic pain. Data were drawn from 2365 participants in the Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent and Vital Elderly (ACTIVE) study. Multilevel models assessed the impact of baseline and time-varying SM…
