Epidemic arboviral diseases: priorities for research and public health.

For decades, arboviral diseases were considered to be only minor contributors to global mortality and disability. As a result, low priority was given to arbovirus research investment and related public health infrastructure. The past five decades, however, have seen an unprecedented emergence of epidemic arboviral diseases (notably dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever, and Zika virus disease) resulting from the triad of the modern world: urbanisation, globalisation, and international mobility. The public health emergency of Zika virus, and the threat of global spread of yellow fever, combined wit…

Socioenvironmental, socioeconomic, and public management indicators as predictors of scorpionism in Brazil.

Scorpionism is an increasing public health problem in tropical countries, particularly in Brazil, where social inequality, environmental degradation, and unplanned urbanization favor the proliferation of scorpions and human-scorpion encounters. In this study, we investigated the association between scorpion sting notifications and hospitalizations and a set of socioeconomic, socioenvironmental, environmental, and public management indicators related to sustainability across all Brazilian municipalities. We used secondary data from national health information systems and indicators from the Sus

A mixed-method analysis of the contribution of informal sport to public health in Australia.

Informal sport is a growth area of sport participation but there has been limited examination of how informal and unstructured forms of participation may contribute to health outcomes that are important for public health. This article aims to address the current lack of data examining the health outcomes associated with informal sport participation and consider the potential role of informal sport within efforts to promote healthier communities through sport. The article seeks to broaden understanding of how informal sport participation can contribute to health outcomes, particularly with rega

Con-sequins 2026: From mission to momentum.

A foundational challenge of equity neuroscience is understanding how to move from describing inequitable neurological disparities to identifying the mechanisms, systems, and infrastructures needed to reduce them. The Society for Equity Neuroscience (SEQUINS) was founded in 2024 to advance brain health equity and reduce neurological disparities through science [1]. CON-Sequins '26, held on May 14, 2026, in Charleston, South Carolina, was the society's second annual meeting and reflected its expanding role as a scientific, educational, disseminative, and workforce-development platform. It conven

'Sustainability' in global health.

'Sustainability' has become a central criterion used by funders - including foundations, governmental agencies and international agencies - in evaluating public health programmes. The criterion became important as a result of frustration with discontinuities in the provision of care. As a result of its application, projects that involve building infrastructure, training or relatively narrow objectives tend to receive support. In this article, we argue for a reconceptualisation of sustainability criteria in light of the idea that health is an investment that is itself sustaining and sustainable

The looming threat of bioterrorism.

Biological weapons have recently attracted the attention and the resources of the nation. Discerning the nature of the threat of bioweapons as well as appropriate responses to them requires greater attention to the biological characteristics of these instruments of war and terror. The dominant paradigm of a weapon as a nuclear device that explodes or a chemical cloud that is set adrift leaves us ill-equipped conceptually and practically to assess and thus to prevent the potentially devastating effects of bioterrorism. Strengthening the public health and infectious disease infrastructure is an

Implementation of Practical Surface SARS-CoV-2 Surveillance in School Settings.

Surface sampling for SARS-CoV-2 RNA detection has shown considerable promise to detect exposure of built environments to infected individuals shedding virus who would not otherwise be detected. Here, we compare two popular sampling media (VTM and SDS) and two popular workflows (Thermo and PerkinElmer) for implementation of a surface sampling program suitable for environmental monitoring in public schools. We find that the SDS/Thermo pipeline shows superior sensitivity and specificity, but that the VTM/PerkinElmer pipeline is still sufficient to support surface surveillance in any indoor settin

Prevalence, intensity and risk factors of tungiasis in Kilifi County, Kenya II: Results from a school-based observational study.

INTRODUCTION: Awareness of the public health importance of tungiasis has been growing in East Africa in recent years, but data on epidemiological characteristics necessary for the planning and implementation of control measures do not exist. The work presented here was part of a larger cross-sectional study on the epidemiology of tungiasis in coastal Kenya and aims at identifying risk factors of tungiasis and severe disease in school children. METHODS: A total of 1,829 students of all age groups from five schools and 56 classes were clinically examined for tungiasis on their feet based on sta

Characteristics and Risk Factors for Electric Scooter-Related Crashes and Injury Crashes among Scooter Riders: A Two-Phase Survey Study.

Electric scooters (or e-scooters) are among the most popular micromobility options that have experienced an enormous expansion in urban transportation systems across the world in recent years. Along with the increased usage of e-scooters, the increasing number of e-scooter-related injuries has also become an emerging global public health concern. However, little is known regarding the risk factors for e-scooter-related crashes and injury crashes. This study consisted of a two-phase survey questionnaire administered to a cohort of e-scooter riders (n = 210), which obtained exposure information

JMM Profile: Vibrio cholerae: an opportunist of human crises.

Vibrio cholerae O1 is the aetiological agent of the severe diarrhoeal disease cholera. Annually, there are an estimated 1-4 million cholera cases worldwide and over 140 000 deaths. The primary mode of disease transmission is through the consumption of water or food contaminated with the bacterium. Although cholera patients can be treated effectively using rehydration therapy, the disease remains a major scourge in areas with limited access to clean water and proper sanitation. Its continued prevalence highlights the failure of socioeconomic policies leading to wealth disparities, fragile and d

Non-communicable Diseases Among Tribal Populations in India: Epidemiology, Social Determinants, and Tailored Public Health Approaches.

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) have become a major public health concern among India's tribal populations, who face unique vulnerabilities. Historically burdened by infectious diseases and malnutrition, tribal communities are now undergoing a rapid epidemiological transition, with rising prevalence of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, hypertension, and cancers. Behavioral risk factors such as tobacco and alcohol use, poor nutrition, and declining traditional food practices intersect with socio-economic disadvantages, low health literacy, and limited healthcare access to exacerbate this burd

Adapting to dementia in society: a challenge for our lifetimes and a charge for public health.

For the last several decades, Alzheimer's disease (AD) has been widely regarded as a late life event, but is now being redefined as a chronic condition that develops over decades. Concurrently, a preponderance of evidence emerging from basic and clinical research in diverse fields such as cardiovascular, endocrine, and mental health has suggested that the environmental component of clinical AD is not only multifactorial in populations and in individuals, but is also modifiable across the life-course, from conception until death. Re-conceptualizing the environmental component of AD to account f

Facility readiness and experience of women and health care providers in receiving and delivering obstetric care in comprehensive health posts in Ethiopia: a mixed method study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal mortality remains a critical public health issue in Ethiopia, with only half of births occurring in health facilities. To address this, the Health Extension Program (HEP) introduced comprehensive health posts (CHPs) to improve maternal and newborn health services in underserved areas. The CHPs are expected to provide essential health services to communities who live in villages that have limited access to a health center or Primary Hospital (more than one-hour walking distance). This study assessed the readiness of CHPs to deliver obstetric care and explored the experience

Raman scattering-based optical sensing of chronic liver diseases.

Chronic liver diseases (CLDs) are a major public health problem. Despite the progress achieved in fighting against viral hepatitis, the emergence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease might pose a serious challenge to the public's health in the coming decades. Medical management of CLDs represents a substantial burden on the public health infrastructures. The health care cost of these diseases is an additional burden that weighs heavily on the economies of developing countries. Effective management of CLDs requires the adoption of reliable and cost-effective screening and diagnosing methods to …
