Periodontal health and global public health.

Chronic diseases are a growing burden to people, to health-care systems and to societies across the world. The rapid increase in the burden of chronic diseases is particularly prevalent in the developing countries. Periodontal disease is one of the two most important oral diseases contributing to the global burden of chronic disease. In addition to social determinants, periodontal health status is related to several proximal factors. Modifiable risk factors, such as tobacco use, excessive alcohol consumption, poor diet and nutrition, obesity, psychological stress and insufficient personal/oral

Core Competencies of the Public Health Workforce in Climate Change and Extreme Weather Events Preparedness, Response, and Recovery: A Scoping Review.

Climate change poses a significant threat to public health and safety, necessitating an urgent, coordinated response. Public health officials must be well-trained to effectively prepare for, respond to, and recover from extreme weather events. Despite emerging frameworks, a gap remains in their systematic application, risking future unpreparedness. This review aimed to identify the necessary competencies for public health professionals to manage climate change and the best methods to teach these skills. An academic librarian helped develop a keyword chain for a PubMed search, which included or

Yoga as salutogenic health promotion across displacement contexts: a culturally responsive public mental health synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Global displacement is a major public mental health concern shaped by conflict, protracted geopolitical instability, disrupted social worlds, and structural inequities. Yoga is increasingly discussed within health promotion as a potentially accessible and adaptable practice. However, much of the existing literature has prioritized symptom-based outcomes and has rarely been situated within displacement-informed public mental health frameworks attentive to structural vulnerability, cultural heterogeneity, and ethical implementation conditions. METHODS: This study undertakes a struct

The questionnaires had closed- and open-ended questions. Interviews were administered by trained nurses and the authors. The prescribing, dispensing practices, including drug labeling and instructions given to mothers/guardians on how to use drugs at home,

Control of mother-to-child transmission of infectious diseases in Brazil: progress in HIV/AIDS and failure in congenital syphilis.

In Brazil, syphilis and HIV infection are considered serious public health problems. However, in practice, epidemiological surveillance, prevention measures, and prenatal care seem to be more effective in the control of mother-to-child transmission of the HIV than in the control of transmission of the Treponema pallidum. Here we discuss the differences in surveillance, prenatal care, and care of the newborn. Important differences were identified. It is concluded that there is an urgent need to establish prevention of mother-to-child transmission of syphilis as a public health priority, using a

Exploring social and public healthcare professionals' experiences providing pregnancy intentions and contraceptive counseling in the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: Unintended pregnancy (UP) is highly prevalent among individuals with multiple social and/or (mental) health challenges. Despite this, pregnancy intentions and contraceptive options are rarely addressed in routine social and public healthcare. To bridge this gap, the Dutch Not Pregnant Now program integrates person-centered counseling on pregnancy intentions and contraceptive options into a variety of social and preventive public health services that people already access, such as social care, mental health and youth care, and public health programs. Since professionals providing th

Rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease.

Rheumatic heart disease poses a major challenge to public health and is the most prevalent heart disease in children. The major determinants of rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease are poverty, malnutrition, overcrowding, poor housing, and a shortage of health-care resources. Although cost-effective strategies for the prevention and control of these diseases are available, they remain underutilized in most developing countries. A World Health Organization Expert Consultation reviewed the current scientific knowledge of rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease, as well as medical and

Advancing Research, Writing, and Publishing in Nursing: Addressing Challenges and Improving Standards.

Nurses constitute nearly 50% of the worldwide health workforce, and the World Health Organisation has advocated for an enlargement of their roles to guarantee fair health care and address the increasing need for services. Dengue--how best to classify it.

Dengue has emerged as a major public health problem worldwide. Dengue virus infection causes a wide range of clinical manifestations. Since the 1970s, clinical dengue has been classified according to the World Health Organization guideline as dengue fever and dengue hemorrhagic fever. The classification has been criticized with regard to its usefulness and its applicability. In 2009, the World Health Organization issued a new guideline that classifies clinical dengue as dengue and severe dengue. The 2009 classification differs significantly from the previous classification in both conceptual a
