Bifenthrin is a widely used pyrethroid insecticide that is frequently detected in aquatic environments, yet the mechanisms underlying its chronic intestinal toxicity in fish remain poorly understood. In this study, common carp (Cyprinus carpio) were chronically exposed to bifenthrin at concentrations of 0, 0.1, 1, and 2 μg/L for 30 d, and intestinal toxicity was comprehensively evaluated through biochemical, molecular, histopathological, microbiome, and metabolomic analyses. Bifenthrin exposure significantly altered the activities of digestive enzymes, induced histopathological damage, disrupt

Lambda-cyhalothrin is one of the most widely used type II pyrethroid insecticides in agriculture, public health programs, and domestic pest control. Although their acute toxicity in humans is generally considered low, concerns have been raised regarding their potential effects on male reproductive function. Male infertility affects a substantial proportion of couples worldwide, and environmental exposures have been proposed as contributing factors. This review critically examines the available evidence linking lambda-cyhalothrin exposure to male reproductive dysfunction. Experimental studies h

The invasive tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta (Meyrick), is a very destructive pest that poses a major threat to tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) production in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), causing extensive yield losses through larval feeding on leaves, stems, and fruits. Chemical insecticides remain the primary control method, but resistance development, biodiversity loss and environmental concerns necessitate alternative strategies. This study aimed at evaluating the efficacy of synthetic and botanical insecticides against T. absoluta during two consecutive cropping seasons 2023-20

OBJECTIVE: Anopheles gambiae s.l. is the major malaria vector in sub-Saharan Africa, and increasing pyrethroid resistance threatens vector control. This study investigated the prevalence of knockdown resistance (kdr) mutations and pyrethroid susceptibility in An. gambiae s.l. populations from Kwara State, North-Central Nigeria.
RESULTS: A total of 250 An. gambiae s.l. mosquitoes were collected from three Local Government Areas. Molecular analysis identified An. coluzzii (31.2%, 95% CI: 25.7-37.3%), An. gambiae s.s. (16.8%, 95% CI: 12.6-22.0%), and An. arabiensis (13.6%, 95% CI: 9.9-18.4%), wh

BACKGROUND: Alkaloids such as caffeine can be toxic for insects. However, although mosquitoes feed on many plants with nectar-containing alkaloids, the impact of these alkaloids on the vectorial capacity of mosquitoes is not known, in particular regarding increased resistance to insecticides.
METHODS: The effects of caffeine on Anopheles coluzzii female mosquitoes in terms of resistance to the insecticide deltamethrin, the rate at which mosquitoes are knocked-down during insecticide exposure, mortality within 48 h of insecticide exposure and longevity following exposure were studied. We also

BACKGROUND: RaTexT®, an innovative rapid tick exposure test, was recently developed to provide farmers with quick, on-site results to improve their acaricide resistance management. This was achieved by exposing partially engorged adult ticks to a specially designed acaricide-impregnated matrix fitted inside a transparent polypropylene box. Each RaTexT® box contains six strips of four small, interconnected compartments, in which ticks are exposed immediately after removal from cattle in the field. In this study, we assessed whether a single strip of four interconnected compartments, instead of

Anthropogenic factors have contributed to the expansion of the dengue vector Aedes aegypti into previously non-endemic regions. In East Africa, rising dengue cases highlight gaps in understanding the role of Ae. aegypti. Here, we present a molecular characterization of Ae. aegypti in Somaliland following a dengue outbreak. Adult Aedes mosquitoes were collected from Hargeisa, Berbera and Burao. PCR and sequencing were applied to determine species, identify vgsc resistance mutations, and analyze bloodmeal sources. WHO bioassays were also conducted to determine the status of pyrethroid insecticid

BACKGROUND: Entomopathogenic fungi like Metarhizium are emerging as effective biopesticides against malaria vectors. They reduce mosquito survival, fecundity, and flight ability, and reverse insecticide susceptibility in resistant Anopheles gambiae sensu lato strains. To elucidate the unclear underlying mechanisms, this study investigates the effects of fungal infections and insecticide exposure on the mosquito's energy reserves and the expression of key metabolic and immune genes.
METHODS: Three mosquito types: (i) pyrethroid-resistant An. gambiae sensu lato and two laboratory colonies: (ii)

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a disease transmitted by the Anopheles gambiae complex, represented mainly in Benin by the sister species An. coluzzii and An. gambiae sensu stricto. Intensive vector control interventions have selected physiological, behavioural and biochemical adaptation mechanisms in these populations of An. vectors. This study aimed to investigate the mechanism of the metabolic resistance of An. coluzzii to insecticides in two urban areas in southern Benin.
METHODS: Larvae and pupae of An. gambiae s.l. and were collected in the municipalities of Cotonou and Porto-Novo between May an

The cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is a polyphagous global agricultural pest that brings serious losses to many kinds of crops. Emamectin benzoate, chlorantraniliprole, and chlorfenapyr are effective insecticides for their control in the field so far. Here, the low lethal effects of the 3 insecticides on H. armigera were evaluated. Exposure to the low lethal concentration (LC25) of these insecticides resulted in prolonged larval and adult developmental periods, with variations in pupal duration across in treatments. Specifically, emamectin benzoate and

Background: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) have significantly reduced the malaria burden in recent decades, and this malaria prevalence reduction has been achieved through the upgrading of pyrethroid long-lasting insecticidal nets. However, this reduction has stalled due to many factors, including rapidly developing pyrethroid resistance. Method: The protocol was registered in PROSPERO, and we used Cochrane methodology to assess bias and evidence quality. Three reviewers extracted data from individual studies, and a meta-analysis was performed using Excel and STATA version 17, expressi

BACKGROUND: Residual spraying with pyrethroid insecticides is still the main strategy used to prevent vector-borne transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiological agent of Chagas disease. The emergence of resistance to these insecticides in triatomine populations associated with vector control failure highlights the need to evaluate alternative tools, such as xenointoxication. Chickens serve as important blood meal sources and are positively associated with triatomine abundance. Therefore, several endectocides have been tested in chickens, with fluralaner exhibiting the best results. Howeve

In 2018, insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) were mass distributed across Madagascar. The bio-efficacy of DawaPlus® 2.0 and PermaNet® 2.0 ITNs was assessed upon arrival and at 12, 24, and 36 months after distribution. Chemical analyses of insecticide residue on ITNs were also conducted. On arrival, mosquito mortality rates observed when exposed to DawaPlus 2.0 (86.4%) and PermaNet 2.0 nets (83.6%) exceeded the WHO's threshold of 80.0%. At 12, 24, and 36 months after distribution, mosquito mortality rates were <56% for all districts. Moreover, the knockdown effect was below the WHO threshold of 95.

Dengue cases are increasing every year in the sub-Himalayan part of West Bengal, where Aedes albopictus (Skuse 1894) has emerged as a predominant dengue vector. Dengue management heavily relies on the recurrent application of chemical insecticides such as temephos (larvicide) and deltamethrin (adulticide). However Ae. albopictus can quickly develop resistance which complicates their management. Thus, detailed population-specific studies on resistance status and mechanism of resistance are useful for designing an effective dengue management strategy. In this study, wild mosquitoes were collecte

BACKGROUND: Insecticide resistance amongst vector populations is a major challenge, exacerbated by the continued use of the same active ingredients. The present study assessed the impact of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) bi-treated with chlorfenapyr-alphacypermethrin (PY-CFP LLIN) or pyriproxyfen-alphacypermethrin (PY-PPF LLIN) on the genetic structure of resistant populations of Anopheles gambiae in 60 clusters divided into three arms from three districts in southern Benin.
METHODS: The study was conducted between September 2019 and October 2021 in 123 villages grouped in 60 clusters

BACKGROUND: The Aedes aegypti mosquito, a primary vector of arboviruses such as dengue, Zika, yellow fever, and chikungunya, poses a significant public health threat worldwide. Its adaptability and genetic diversity complicate control efforts, enabling rapid resistance evolution. Pyrethroid insecticides, a cornerstone of vector control, target voltage-gated sodium channels, yet resistance driven by knockdown resistance (kdr) mutations and detoxification mechanisms have undermined their efficacy.
METHODS: This review summarizes findings from a targeted literature search, exploring the genetic

BACKGROUND: The WHO cone bioassay is routinely used to evaluate the bioefficacy of insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) for product pre-qualification and confirmation of continued ITN performance during operational monitoring. Despite its standardized nature, variability is often observed between tests. We investigated the influence of temperature in the testing environment, mosquito feeding status and mosquito density on cone bioassay results.
METHODS: Cone bioassays were conducted on MAGNet (alphacypermethrin) and Veeralin (alphacypermethrin and piperonyl butoxide (PBO)) ITNs, using laboratory-r
