Lower limb muscle activation pattern in male soccer players with lumbar hyperlordosis.

OBJECTIVE: the aim of the current study was to compare the lower limb muscle activation pattern in soccer players with and without lumbar hyperlordosis during single-leg squat performance. METHODS: thirty male collegiate soccer players (15 with and 15 without lumbar hyperlordosis) performed the SLS task. Surface EMG was used to record the activation of eleven lower limb muscles. The activation of these muscles reduces to 100 points during the SLS cycle, where 50% demonstrates the maximum knee flexion, and 0% and 99% demonstrate the maximum knee extension. RESULTS: soccer players with lumbar

Muscle activation pattern during two-legged hopping in children with and without down syndrome.

This study aimed to characterize muscle activation and its variability during two-legged hopping in children with and without Down syndrome (DS). Seventeen typically developing (TD) children and 15 children with DS were recruited. As only 6 children with DS (4F/2M, 9.95 (1.71) years) completed the test, we used a 2(TD):1(DS) ratio to age- and sex-match 12 TD children. Subjects first hopped at a self-selected free frequency and then three metronome-cued conditions: slow, preferred, and moderate (80%, 100%, and 120% of free frequency, respectively). Across conditions, children with DS exhibited

Reliability of a portable device for measuring lower-limb muscle strength in patients who underwent total knee arthroplasty.

[Purpose] This study aimed to analyze the reliability of using the Locomo Scan to measure quadriceps muscle strength in patients who underwent total knee arthroplasty. [Participants and Methods] Two testers (A and B) used the Locomo Scan to perform three measurements of quadriceps muscle strength on the operated side of 64 patients who underwent total knee arthroplasty and recorded the mean and maximum values. We then assessed intra- and inter-rater reliability using intraclass correlation coefficients and obtained systematic errors via Bland-Altman analysis. We calculated the 95% confidence i…

Cycle-to-cycle control of swing phase of paraplegic gait induced by surface electrical stimulation.

Parameterised swing phase of gait in paraplegics was obtained using surface electrical stimulation of the hip flexors, hamstrings and quadriceps; the hip flexors were stimulated to obtain a desired hip angle range, the hamstrings to provide foot clearance in the forward swing, and the quadriceps to acquire knee extension at the end of the swing phase. We report on two main aspects; optimisation of the initial stimulation parameters, and parameter adaptation (control). The initial stimulation patterns were experimentally optimised in two paraplegic subjects using a controlled stand device, resu

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation of the quadriceps in patients with non-small cell lung cancer receiving palliative chemotherapy: a randomized phase II study.

BACKGROUND: A reduced exercise capacity is associated with increased morbidity and mortality in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Therapeutic exercise can be beneficial and neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) of the quadriceps muscles may represent a practical approach. The primary aim of this study was to determine the acceptability of NMES of the quadriceps to patients with NSCLC used alongside palliative chemotherapy. Secondary aims explored aspects of safety and efficacy of NMES in this setting. METHODS: Patients with advanced NSCLC due to receive first-li…

Diabetes-associated thigh muscle degeneration mediates knee osteoarthritis-related outcomes: results from a longitudinal cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: We examined the association between diabetes mellitus (DM) and longitudinal MRI biomarkers for thigh muscle degeneration in patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA) and their mediatory role in worsening KOA-related symptoms. METHODS: The Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI) participants with radiographic KOA (Kellgren-Lawrence grade ≥ 2) were included. Thighs and corresponding knees of KOA patients with versus without self-reported DM were matched for potential confounders using propensity score (PS) matching. We developed and used a validated deep learning method for longitudinal thigh

[Lumbar radiculopathy presenting neuralgic amyotrophy with gadolinium-enhanced MRI lesions: a case report].

A 40-year-old man presented with sudden onset of severe left buttock pain that radiated down the thigh to the leg. On examination, he showed moderate weakness and atrophy in the left quadriceps and tibialis anterior muscles, and absence of a left patellar tendon reflex. Needle electromyography revealed an active denervation pattern in the left quadriceps muscles, suggesting neuralgic amyotrophy. Contrast-enhanced MRI showed abnormal enhancement of the left cauda equina. Steroid pulse therapy relieved pain, and subsequent high-dose intravenous immunoglobulin prevented progression of muscle atro…

Effect of muscle injection site on preanaesthetic sedation in dogs.

The demeanour of 122 dogs was assessed, and a mixture of 0.025 mg/kg acepromazine and 0.3 mg/kg morphine was injected intramuscularly into one of four randomly assigned muscle sites (cervical epaxial, triceps brachii, middle gluteal and quadriceps femoris) and the dogs' reactions to the injections were assessed. The development of sedation and the occurrence of side effects were assessed after 10, 20 and 30 minutes, and each dog's reaction to venous catheterisation was scored. All the dogs became similarly sedated after 30 minutes. The degree of sedation and the incidence of side effects were

Muscle strength evaluations after ACL reconstruction.

The quadriceps and hamstring muscle strengths of 16 patients operated using a bone-patellar tendon-bone (BTB) autograft and 32 patients operated using a quadruple hamstring autograft for an arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction were analyzed 4- to 7-years postoperatively. Standardized isokinetic testing, a clinical evaluation and instrumented assessment of knee laxity were done. The findings showed no significant strength deficits between the patients in the BTB and Hamstring groups and the deficits were, in general, small. The quadriceps and hamstring muscle strengths w

Tactile stimulation restores inhibited stretch reflex attributable to attenuation of Ia afferents during surprise landing.

Arthrogenic muscle inhibition (AMI) is induced by pathological knee conditions. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of tactile stimulation on reflex changes induced by simulated AMI during unpredictable landing performances. Twenty participants performed six unilateral landing tasks: 15 cm normal landing (15NL), 30 cm normal landing (30NL), surprise landing (SL), 30 cm normal landing following vibration (30NLV), SL following vibration (SLV), and SL following vibration with Kinesiology tape (SLK). For SL, the solid landing platform (15 cm) was removed and replaced by a false floor

In vitro evaluation of the relationship between the semitendinosus muscle and cranial cruciate ligament in canine cadavers.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the role of the semitendinosus muscle in stabilization of the canine stifle joint. SAMPLE: Left stifle joints collected from cadavers of 8 healthy Beagles. PROCEDURES: Left hind limbs, including the pelvis, were collected. To mimic the tensile force of the quadriceps, gastrocnemius, and semitendinosus muscles, wires were placed under strain between the ends of each muscle. A sensor was used to measure the tensile force in each wire. Specimens were tested in the following sequence: cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL) intact, CrCL transected, released (tensile force of semi

Correlation between posture, balance control, and peripheral muscle function in adults with cystic fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: In addition to pulmonary involvement, adults with cystic fibrosis (CF) are at higher risk of developing skeletal muscle dysfunct … he medial-lateral range (ρ = -0.73; p = 0.002). We also noted a significant correlation between the quadriceps muscle strength and the medial lateral range (ρ = -0.69; p = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS: In adults with CF, it is possible that the imbalance occurs by both distortion of the head-trunk relationship and lower extremity abnormalities as noted by the reduced quadr …

Significance of the single-legged hop test to the anterior cruciate ligament-reconstructed knee in relation to muscle strength and anterior laxity.

We investigated the significance of the single-legged hop test to the anterior cruciate ligament-reconstructed knee as it specifically relat … r the relationship between residual anterior laxity and the hop test was invariant across levels of quadriceps muscle strength recovery. Furthermore, we examined the effect of graft harvest site on the hop index. Positive correlations were found between the hop index and muscle strength index at all levels of residual anterior laxity (P < 0.05), but these correlati …

Closed kinetic chain alone compared to combined open and closed kinetic chain exercises for quadriceps strengthening after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction with respect to return to sports: a prospective matched follow-up study.

Rehabilitation after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction has focused over the past decade on closed kinetic chain (CKC) exercises due to presumably less strain on the graft than with isokinetic open kinetic chain exercises (OKC); however, recent reports suggest that there are only minor differences in ACL strain values between some CKC and OKC exercises. We studied anterior knee laxity, thigh muscle torque, and return to preinjury sports level in 44 patients with unilateral ACL; group 1 carried out quadriceps strengthening only with CKC while group 2 trained with CKC plus OKC exerc

Prediction of quadriceps strength recovery after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction with a hamstring autograft: Decision tree analysis.

BACKGROUND: The wide variations in patient demographics and concomitant injuries make the prediction of which patients will regain strength quickly following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction challenging. This study aimed to identify the dominant factor affecting quadriceps strength recovery after ACL reconstruction with a hamstring tendon autograft and to construct a predictive model for quadriceps strength recovery using decision tree analysis. METHODS: Three hundred and eighty-six patients who underwent ACL reconstruction with a hamstring tendon autograft were included in thi
