The equality and disparities of progress in the diabetic foot in the North American and Caribbean (NAC) region.

Eighty-five (85%), of lower limb amputations are preventable. Amidst all the research and data on prevention, has there been any improvements within the North American and Caribbean region? Exploring the current data and outcomes it shows that there has been no improvement in the diabetic foot and the resulting suffering associated. There seems to be a connection between systemic racism, accessibility from a financial and political base line and lack of education on the impact prevention and policies that can be implemented to halt this crisis. The recognition of this fact has supported the la…

Psychiatry during National Socialism: Contacts with relatives of the victims of NS-Euthanasia as part of a consequent Memorial Culture.

Crimes against humanity took place in many institutions as well as psychiatric departments during the Nazi dictatorship. The cruel and inhumane history of psychiatry during National Socialism is already widely known and broadly published. Victims of the Nazi regime, of the Holocaust, of racism, racial hygiene, and hereditary biology have often been the subjects of scientific inquiry; the relatives and descendants of the killed inpatients have yet to be part of a scientific or psychotherapeutic response. Analogous to the psychiatric-psychotherapeutic approach with traumatized individuals, the p…

Addressing social and racial justice in public policy for healthy living.

Long-standing health disparities stemming from the historical, inequitable distribution of wealth, power, and privilege in the United States exist across almost every health indicator and outcome. There is a need for equitable policy, systems, and environment changes that are rooted in an understanding of the historical arc of structural racism across obesity prevention and treatment, ending tobacco and nicotine addiction and increasing access to healthy, affordable foods and physical activity opportunities and infrastructure. This paper explores the influence of structural inequities on the p…

Anxiety psychopathology in African American adults: literature review and development of an empirically informed sociocultural model.

In this review, the extant literature concerning anxiety psychopathology in African American adults is summarized to develop a testable, explanatory framework with implications for future research. The model was designed to account for purported lower rates of anxiety disorders in African Americans compared to European Americans, along with other ethnoracial differences reported in the literature. Three specific beliefs or attitudes related to the sociocultural experience of African Americans are identified: awareness of racism, stigma of mental illness, and salience of physical illnesses. In …

Race, race-based discrimination, and health outcomes among African Americans.

Persistent and vexing health disadvantages accrue to African Americans despite decades of work to erase the effects of race discrimination in this country. Participating in these efforts, psychologists and other social scientists have hypothesized that African Americans' continuing experiences with racism and discrimination may lie at the root of the many well-documented race-based physical health disparities that affect this population. With newly emerging methodologies in both measurement of contextual factors and functional neuroscience, an opportunity now exists to cleave together a compre…

Protective Factors to Promote Health and Flourishing in Black Youth Exposed to Parental Incarceration.

BACKGROUND: Mass incarceration of Black fathers and mothers in the United States has had an undeniably negative effect on the health and well-being of their children, families, and communities. Nearly 1 in every 9 Black youth in the United States has had an incarcerated parent compared to 1 in every 17 White youth. To mitigate the consequences of such historical and structural racism, family and community protective factors that promote health and flourishing in Black youth need exploration. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to understand the associations of protective family, school, and…

Incarcerated aboriginal women's experiences of accessing healthcare and the limitations of the 'equal treatment' principle.

BACKGROUND: Colonization continues in Australia, sustained through institutional and systemic racism. Targeted discrimination and intergenerational trauma have undermined the health and wellbeing of Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population, leading to significantly poorer health status, social impoverishment and inequity resulting in the over-representation of Aboriginal people in Australian prisons. Despite adoption of the 'equal treatment' principle, on entering prison in Australia entitlements to the national universal healthcare system are revoked and Aboriginal people …

Mental health and psychosocial factors in young refugees, immigrants and Greeks: A retrospective study.

Since 1989, Greece has accepted thousands of economic immigrants and more recently, since 2010, has been transformed to a host country for refugees mainly from countries at war. Refugees experience a number of serious traumas, i.e. death of family member or a close friend, physical, emotional or sexual abuse, and at the same time have to confront poverty, hostility and racism during and after the settlement in the host country. On the other hand, economic immigrants have mainly to face adaption difficulties in a host country including racism, poverty, different culture, bureaucracy. The aim of…

Health Security for All? Racial Discourse in Presidential Health Speeches from Roosevelt to Biden.

CONTEXT: Racial inequality remains a central, entrenched characteristic of American health and health care, and racial discourse strongly shapes health politics and policy. Despite this, discussions of race and health are rare in a core site of health policy making-the presidency-although this varies across historical periods and political parties. This study examines the prevalence and nature of racial discourse in 90 years of presidential health speeches, from Franklin D. Roosevelt to Joe Biden, addressing in particular a debate about whether racial discourse rose or fell after the civil rig

Is pharmacogenetics being racialized? An investigation into the reinscription of racial beliefs in modern biomedicine.

Racial classifications have a complex and troubled past in the social and scientific history of humankind. They are the result of racism and have been used to devalue and degrade non-White people. Although the concept of race has acquired a social component and the genetic similarity of people based on race has been proven, the category is increasingly used in pharmacogenetic studies to create biased study populations under the guise of personalized medicine. The heart failure drug BiDil, which was only approved for Black people in 2005, gained particular notoriety. Its race-specific approval …

Performance and making material histories of racialising violence in medicine.

This article argues that gynaecology has historically understood Black women's reproductive organs as a site of resource extraction, not hea … tted from the archive. The play Family Tree draws connections between Sims and instances of medical racism in the 20th and 21st centuries, including Henrietta Lacks (1920-1951), whose cervical cells were taken for medical research without her consent, and Black nurses who died during the COVID-19 pandemic working for the UK's National Health Service. Racial Implicit Bias and Communication Among Physicians in a Simulated Environment.

IMPORTANCE: Racial implicit bias can contribute to health disparities through its negative influence on physician communication with Black patients. Interventions for physicians to address racial implicit bias in their clinical encounters are limited by a lack of high-fidelity (realistic) simulations to provide opportunities for skill development and practice. OBJECTIVE: To describe the development and initial evaluation of a high-fidelity simulation of conditions under which physicians might be influenced by implicit racial bias. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study

Inconsistent Reporting of Discrimination Over Time Using the Experiences of Discrimination Scale: Potential Underestimation of Lifetime Burden.

Studies documenting self-reported experiences of discrimination over the life course have been limited. Such information could be important for informing longitudinal epidemiologic studies of discrimination and health. We characterized trends in self-reports of racial, socioeconomic status, and gender discrimination over time measured using the Experiences of Discrimination Scale, with a focus on whether individuals' reports of lifetime discrimination were consistent over time. Overall experiences of discrimination and the number of settings in which discrimination was reported in 1992, 2000,
