Dosimetry in the space radiation field.

The results of dosimetric measurements are presented which were performed as part of a German experiment package flown onboard the Russian s … astronauts. Chromosomal aberrations in peripheral lymphocytes were analyzed. It was found that the radiation exposure during the spaceflight leads to an elevation of dicentric chromosomes, indicating a radiation burden of the astronauts.

[Radiation therapy for carcinoma of vagina].

Thirty-four patients with carcinoma of the vagina were treated by radiotherapy at the Hyogo Medical Center for Adults between April 1965 and May 1990. All patients were treated with a combination of external and intracavitary or intestinal irradiation. Twenty-three patients had squamous cell carcinoma, five had adenocarcinoma and two had malignant melanoma. The five-year survival of patients with squamous cell carcinoma was 70% in Stage I (10 patients), 40% in Stage II (seven patients), 50% in Stage III (three patients) and 0% in Stage IV (three patients). Local control was achieved in 72.7% o…

Exposure of the orthopaedic surgeon to radiation.

A prospective study of sixty-five orthopaedic procedures performed with fluoroscopic assistance was undertaken to determine the risk to the primary orthopaedic surgeon with regard to radiation. Radiation was monitored with the use of a universal film badge placed outside the collar of a lead apron, and a gas-sterilized thermoluminescent dosimeter ring worn on each hand. The rings were changed with every operation, but the same film badge was transferred from surgeon to surgeon. The hand dominance of the surgeon, the duration of the operative procedure, the type of operation, and the total time…

Overview of radiation effects and control.

The controversy over the effects of low-level exposure to radiation enhances the perception of radiation as a particularly insidious phenomenon of nature. Yet radiation has many useful purposes, including applications for medical diagnosis and therapy, industrial quality control, and the generation of electrical power. Attainment of such societal benefits without compromising the health and safety of potentially exposed persons requires imposition of rigorous measures to control radiation exposures.

Relationship of cataract to radiation sensitivity.

Considerable exposure to radiation always causes posterior subcapsular cataract (PSC). This investigation was conducted to ascertain whether cellular hypersensitivity to radiation may be identified as a possible cause of cataract in persons exposed to low levels of radiation. Patients were studied in whom PSC had followed probable exposure to low levels of radiation or in whom PSC had developed before the age of 60 without known exposure. The patients with cataract were compared with age and sex matched controls without cataract. Radiation sensitivity was estimated by measuring clonal growth o…

Radiation therapy in the treatment of chemodectomas.

Twenty-six patients with chemodectomas were treated with radiation therapy from 1961 to 1983 and followed for at least 4 years. In 16 glomus tympanicum lesions treated primarily with radiation, long-term control was achieved in all (follow-up 4-24 years, mean 10.5). Fifteen of 16 had no clinical evidence of disease at time of death or last follow-up, and one patient had recurrent but stable disease at 10 years and died of an unrelated illness 19 years after treatment. Eight of the glomus tympanicum lesions were referred for radiation therapy with persistent disease after multiple surgical proc…

Radiation-induced changes in the breast.

Thirty-six postirradiation breast tissue specimens from 30 patients with breast cancer treated by primary radiation therapy were evaluated to define the effects of therapeutic doses of ionizing radiation on the residual non-neoplastic breast tissue. Breast tissue was sampled an average of 30.4 months after completion of therapy because of the development of new clinically or mammographically detectable abnormalities within the treated breasts. The average radiation dose was 6,399 rad to the primary tumor area and 4,778 rad to the remainder of the breast. Breast tissue sections from 35 nonirrad…

[Radiation-induced meningiomas of the brain].

From the observation over 62 patients with meningioma of the brain a connection was detected between previous X-ray irradiation of the skin on the head and the occurrence of the meningioma. Predominance of parasagittal localization of the tumors was revealed which, evidently, was associated with the peculiarities of the method of X-ray therapy applied and with the possibility of the growth of the meningiomas from arachnoid-endothelial aggregations in the dura mater. Multiple meningiomas were encountered in 23% of the patients. The cases are described.

[Radiation therapy of psoriasis and parapsoriasis].

Selective UV-Phototherapy with lambda 300-320 nm (SUP) as well as oral photochemotherapy with 8-methoxy-psoralene plus UVA-radiation (PUVA intern) are very effective in clearing the lesions of th generalized psoriasis and those of the chronic forms of parapsoriasis. Being treated with 4 suberythemal doses per week psoriasis patients are free or nearly free of symptoms after averaging 6.3 weeks of SUP-therapy or after 5.3 weeks of PUVA orally. The PUVA-therapy is mainly indicated in pustular, inverse and erythrodermic psoriasis as well as in parapsoriasis in plaques and variegata. In all other …

[Radiation injury of the spinal cord].

The literature dealing with radiation myelopathy is reviewed. The following points are to be noticed:radiation myelopathy is a rare complication in the radiation therapy of extraspinal tumors, nevertheless the number of case reports is increasing during the last years; probably this is due to the increasing use of high energy therapy. Already a cord dose of 1000 rad may be dangerous; with an increasing dose the risk of radiation myelopathy is increasing too. Besides the total dose the incidence of radiation myelopathy depends on the rate of delivery, the over-all time of administration, the si…
