Radiation dose benchmarks during cardiac catheterization for congenital heart disease in the United States.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to define age-stratified, procedure-specific benchmark radiation dose levels during interventional catheterization for congenital heart disease. BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of published literature with regard to radiation dose levels during catheterization for congenital heart disease. Obtaining benchmark radiation data is essential for assessing the impact of quality improvement initiatives for radiation safety. METHODS: Data were obtained retrospectively from 7 laboratories participating in the Congenital Cardiac Catheterization Project on Outcomes

Chronic radiation exposure in the Rivne-Polissia region of Ukraine: implications for birth defects.

OBJECTIVES: The health effects of chronic low-dose radiation exposure remains a controversial question. Monitoring after the Chernobyl nuclear accident in Ukraine suggested that chronic low-dose radiation exposure was not linked to cancer mortality among the general population. However, elevated rates of birth defects in contaminated compared to uncontaminated regions suggest that exposure to radiation in utero might impact development and that chronic radiation exposure might represent an underestimated risk to human health. METHODS: We sought to determine current radiation exposure routes i

Radiation Overuse in Intensive Care Units.

Radiological imaging is essential for acute patient management in Intensive Care Units (ICUs); however, it introduces the risk of exposure to ionizing radiation. This review synthesizes research on radiation exposure in ICU settings, highlighting its rise during the COVID-19 pandemic and the rise in repetitive imaging. Our analysis extends to radiation safety thresholds, revealing that some ICU patients exceed the diagnostic reference level, emphasizing the need to balance diagnostic utility against potential long-term risks, such as cancer. Prospective studies have demonstrated an increase in

Estimating occupational radiation doses when individual dosimetry information is not available: a job exposure matrix.

BACKGROUND: A job exposure matrix (JEM) was developed for a population based case control study to assess the possible association between occupational radiation and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. METHODS: Using published radiation monitoring data, we developed a radiation JEM composed of estimated annual dose distributions, categorized by time period, for a broad range of occupational and industrial groups. RESULTS: When information is available to correctly assess an individual's exposure status, the annual dose distributions in the JEM can be used in conjunction with job histories to estimate th…

Development and validation of a GEANT4 radiation transport code for CT dosimetry.

The authors have created a radiation transport code using the GEANT4 Monte Carlo toolkit to simulate pediatric patients undergoing CT examinations. The focus of this paper is to validate their simulation with real-world physical dosimetry measurements using two independent techniques. Exposure measurements were made with a standard 100-mm CT pencil ionization chamber, and absorbed doses were also measured using optically stimulated luminescent (OSL) dosimeters. Measurements were made in air with a standard 16-cm acrylic head phantom and with a standard 32-cm acrylic body phantom. Physical dose

Automatic scoring of dicentric chromosomes as a tool in large scale radiation accidents.

Mass casualty scenarios of radiation exposure require high throughput biological dosimetry techniques for population triage in order to rapidly identify individuals who require clinical treatment. The manual dicentric assay is a highly suitable technique, but it is also very time consuming and requires well trained scorers. In the framework of the MULTIBIODOSE EU FP7 project, semi-automated dicentric scoring has been established in six European biodosimetry laboratories. Whole blood was irradiated with a Co-60 gamma source resulting in 8 different doses between 0 and 4.5Gy and then shipped to

Accurate localization of optic radiation during neurosurgery in an interventional MRI suite.

Accurate localization of the optic radiation is key to improving the surgical outcome for patients undergoing anterior temporal lobe resection for the treatment of refractory focal epilepsy. Current commercial interventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners are capable of performing anatomical and diffusion weighted imaging and are used for guidance during various neurosurgical procedures. We present an interventional imaging workflow that can accurately localize the optic radiation during surgery. The workflow is driven by a near real-time multichannel nonrigid image registration alg

External dose estimation for nuclear worker studies.

Epidemiological studies of nuclear workers are an important source of direct information on the health effects of exposure to radiation at low doses and low dose rates. These studies have the important advantage of doses that have been measured objectively through the use of personal dosimeters. However, to make valid comparisons of worker-based estimates with those obtained from data on A-bomb survivors or persons exposed for medical reasons, attention must be given to potential biases and uncertainties in dose estimates. This paper discusses sources of error in worker dose estimates and desc

Therapeutic Challenges in Managing Triple-Negative Breast Cancer in a Patient With Central Core Disease.

Central core disease (CCD) is a congenital myopathy characterized by muscle weakness, skeletal deformities, delayed motor milestones, and susceptibility to malignant hyperthermia. Symptoms of CCD can be exacerbated by various physiological and pharmacological triggers, necessitating careful monitoring, particularly during medical interventions. Breast cancer treatment typically involves modalities such as surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and endocrine therapy, all of which may exacerbate underlying myopathic conditions. Chemotherapy and immunotherapy especially have the potenti

Leukaemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma mortality after low-level exposure to ionising radiation in nuclear workers (INWORKS): updated findings from an international cohort study.

BACKGROUND: A major update to the International Nuclear Workers Study (INWORKS) was undertaken to strengthen understanding of associations between low-dose exposure to penetrating forms of ionising radiation and mortality. Here, we report on associations between radiation dose and mortality due to haematological malignancies. METHODS: We assembled a cohort of 309 932 radiation-monitored workers (269 487 [87%] males and 40 445 [13%] females) employed for at least 1 year by a nuclear facility in France (60 697 workers), the UK (147 872 workers), and the USA (101 363 workers). Measuring radiation-induced DNA damage in Cryptococcus neoformans and Saccharomyces cerevisiae using long range quantitative PCR.

DNA damage has been considered to be the universal critical lesion in cells after exposure to ionizing radiation. Measuring radiation-induced DNA damage is important to understand the mechanisms of radiation-induced toxicity and monitor DNA damage repairs. Currently the most widely used methods to measure DNA damage are pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGF) and single-cell gel electrophoresis (also known as the comet assay), both of which are technically challenging and time consuming. Long range quantitative polymerase chain reaction (LR-QPCR) has been used successfully to measure nuclear a

Resistance of Feather-Associated Bacteria to Intermediate Levels of Ionizing Radiation near Chernobyl.

Ionizing radiation has been shown to produce negative effects on organisms, although little is known about its ecological and evolutionary effects. As a study model, we isolated bacteria associated with feathers from barn swallows Hirundo rustica from three study areas around Chernobyl differing in background ionizing radiation levels and one control study site in Denmark. Each bacterial community was exposed to four different γ radiation doses ranging from 0.46 to 3.96 kGy to test whether chronic exposure to radiation had selected for resistant bacterial strains. Experimental radiation durati

Doses from external irradiation to Marshall Islanders from Bikini and Enewetak nuclear weapons tests.

Annual doses from external irradiation resulting from exposure to fallout from the 65 atmospheric nuclear weapons tests conducted in the Marshall Islands at Bikini and Enewetak between 1946 and 1958 have been estimated for the first time for Marshallese living on all inhabited atolls. All tests that deposited fallout on any of the 23 inhabited atolls or separate reef islands have been considered. The methodology used to estimate the radiation doses at the inhabited atolls is based on test- and location-specific radiation survey data, deposition density estimates of 137Cs, and fallout times-of-

Top Colorectal Articles from 2021 to Inform Your Cancer Practice.

Multimodality treatment for locally advanced rectal cancer is the standard of care. Treatments include surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, with medical therapies now being favored in the neoadjuvant setting. Various regimens continue to be studied and defined in prospective randomized trials. The PRODIGE 23 and RAPIDO trials showed improved disease-free survival and pathologic complete response rates for split chemotherapy/radiation treatment and short-course radiation with consolidation chemotherapy, respectively; both compared with traditional neoadjuvant long course chemoradiation, surger

Imaging findings in pediatric type 1 Gaucher disease: what the clinician needs to know.

This study presents visceral and skeletal imaging findings commonly observed in pediatric patients with type I Gaucher disease. Presented images show methods used for radiologic assessment of pediatric Gaucher patients, and imaging findings are discussed in the context of the underlying pathophysiology of the disease. Routine radiologic surveillance plays a central role in assessing Gaucher disease progression and response to treatment, but monitoring of pediatric patients presents specific challenges with regard to minimizing radiation exposure and interpreting extent of marrow involvement ag
