Analysis of the frequency and nature of hyaline ring granulomas in inflammatory odontogenic cysts.

AIM: To determine the prevalence of hyaline ring granulomas (HRGs) in a large case series of inflammatory odontogenic cysts, and to investig … during the study period presented HRGs. The relative frequency of HRGs was higher amongst residual radicular cysts (6.1%), followed by paradental cysts (5.6%) and radicular cysts (3.0%). HRGs appeared as roughly circular homogeneous/fibrillar masses in 14 (63.6%) cases and as round structures enclosing amorphous material in 3 (13.6%) cases. Most (77.8%) roughly …

YAP Expression is Related to the Aggressive Behavior of Odontogenic Cysts.

Yes-associated protein (YAP) and Ki-67 are known to be involved in cell proliferation. While their overexpression is associated with aggressive behaviors in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), their roles in odontogenic cysts have not been thoroughly investigated. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the immunohistochemical expression of YAP and Ki-67 in odontogenic cysts.Tissue samples included 12 radicular cysts, 10 dentigerous cysts, 9 odontogenic keratocysts, and 9 normal oral mucosa specimens. Immunohistochemical analysis was conducted both manually and using ImageJ software for compa…

Odontogenic cysts: a clinical study of 695 cases.

The aim of this study was to analyze the files of 695 consecutive patients operated on under general anesthesia for odontogenic cysts in an … sdom tooth region in 15% (total = 100%). The three most frequently diagnosed odontogenic cysts were radicular cysts (53.5%), dentigerous cysts (22.3%) and odontogenic keratocysts (19.1%). Together, these three entities represented 94.9% of all odontogenic cysts. The mean number of operation per patient was 1.16 (SD: 0.6, range: 1-10). The mean cumulated duration …

Epidemiological analysis of oral surgery procedures.

The epidemiological study was conducted to assess oral health of patients referred to the Department of Oral Surgery at Clinical Hospital Center in Rijeka. The distribution of particular diagnoses and surgical interventions in relation to frequency of occurrence was tested. The total of 1,268 patients aged from 5 to 89 years, both sexes, were included in the study. All the patients were treated under local anesthesia. The most common reason for referral to oral surgery was chronic periapical lesion (33.3%), followed by retained root (26.7%), impacted tooth (12.7%), and radicular cyst (8.3%). T…

Lumbar synovial cyst as a cause of low back pain and acute radiculopathy: a case report.

The authors report the case of a 69-year old female with a persistent history of low back pain. Plain lumbar radiographs, performed at symptom initiation, revealed lumbar spondylolisthesis. Low back pain was attributed to this, and the patient received conservative treatment with partial relief of symptoms. Four years later, and as a result of acute onset of radicular symptoms, a lumbar spine magnetic resonance imaging scan was performed, revealing an epidural cystic lesion. The cyst was removed, and histopathology revealed a synovial cyst.

Evaluation of c-Myc in odontogenic cysts and tumours-An immunohistochemical study.

OBJECTIVE: To assess immunohistochemically the presence of c-Myc both qualitatively and quantitatively in odontogenic cysts and tumours and to correlate the results with biological behaviour of these lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded blocks of odontogenic cysts and tumours were retrieved from institutional archives. The study sample size was 45 (n = 45), which included 10 cases of odontogenic keratocyst cyst (n = 10), five cases of radicular cyst (n = 5), five cases of dentigerous cyst (n = 5), and 10 cases of solid ameloblastoma of which five cases are follicu…

A modified technique for obliteration of large bony defects after cystectomy.

Thirteen cysts treated by enucleation followed by collapsing an osteoperiosteal flap to eliminate dead space are presented. Four of the cysts were dentigerous and nine were radicular. The bony defects ranged in size from 3 to 7 cm in greatest dimension. Healing by primary intention occurred in all cases. This method has been found to be successful in the obliteration of large bony defects after cystectomy.

Transforaminal Endoscopic Decompression of Facet Cysts by Interventional Pain Physicians.

Lumbar synovial cysts (LSC) can impinge neural structures, causing radicular back pain. Conservative treatment options; however, are often ineffective, and traditional surgical techniques can cause joint instability. We describe two cases in which interventional pain physicians used transforaminal endoscopic spine surgery to treat LSC. The patients reported complete resolution of their lower back and radicular pain and the procedures preserved their motor function and sensation in their bilateral lower extremities. This technique is a viable option for remediation of LSC and can be performed b

Orthokeratinised odontogenic cyst mimicking periapical cyst.

Orthokeratinised odontogenic cyst (OOC) denotes the odontogenic cyst that microscopically has an orthokeratinised epithelial lining. OOC is characterised by a less-aggressive behaviour and a low rate of recurrence. This report describes a case of OOC involving posterior part of the mandible that mimicked periapical cyst in a 14-year-old boy. The initial clinical diagnosis was given as periapical cyst based on the clinical and radiographical features. Enucleation of the cyst was performed and the specimen was sent for histopathological examination. A definite diagnosis of OOC was made by histop

An instance of an atypical intraspinal cyst presenting as S1 radiculopathy: a case report and brief review of pathophysiology.

Intraspinal cysts are rare, but typically they originate from a degenerate zygapophyseal joint. These cysts have been commonly referred to as juxtafacet cysts and occur concomitantly with lumbar and occasionally lower-limb radicular pain. Documented cases have shown pseudoarthroses developing from nonhealing pars defects. Histologic analyses have found synovial tissue within these fibrocartilaginous accumulations. We present a case of S1 radiculopathy indicated by an intraspinal pseudocyst arising as a complication of a chronic spondylolytic defect. A brief review of the related pathophysiolog

Inflammatory paradental cysts in the globulomaxillary region.

Cysts located in the maxilla between the roots of an erupted lateral incisor and a canine were studied. Radicular cysts were excluded by the prerequisite of a positive pulp vitality test in both adjacent teeth, and odontogenic keratocysts were excluded by histologic examination. In the period from 1971-1987, 8 cysts were found which fulfilled the criteria for inclusion. The average age of the patients was 18.8 yr. All cysts were lined by a hyperplastic non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium and there was always a heavy infiltrate of inflammatory cells in the connective tissue. The clin…

Lumbar intraforaminal synovial cyst in young adulthood: case report and review of the literature.

Study Design Case report. Objective Lumbar juxtafacet cysts (synovial and ganglion cysts) are a rare cause of low back and radicular leg pain. Most patients with lumbar cysts are in their sixth decade of life and have significant facet joint and disk degeneration. Lumbar synovial cysts (LSCs) are extremely rare in adolescence and young adulthood, and to our knowledge, only two pediatric cases of LSC have been reported in the literature. We aim to prove the existence of LSC in adolescent patients as a real entity that causes low back and radicular complaints and to discuss the possibility of tr

Detection of vascular endothelial growth factor/ vascular permeability factor in periapical lesions.

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), also known as vascular permeability factor (VPF), is a multifunctional cytokine. It is overexpres … l cells always were stained by VEGF/VPF antibody, both in periapical lesions with epithelium and in radicular cysts. This study demonstrated that periapical lesions express VEGF/VPF, although with some differences in cell immunolabeling, which correlated to the lesions' stages of development. Initially, VEGF/VPF would assure angiogenesis and vascular hyperpermea …

[A study of epithelial cell kinetics of the odontogenic keratocyst].

OBJECTIVE: To study epithelial cell kinetics of the odontogenic keratocyst. METHODS: Proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) immunohistochemistry in 60 cases and cellular nuclear DNA contents cytometry in 40 cases were used to compare the epithelial cell kinetics of the odontogenic keratocyst, radicular cyst, dentigerous cyst, and ameloblastoma. RESULTS: The epithelial cells in odontogenic keratocyst has the potential of active growth instead of passive expanding. CONCLUSION: The authors suggest that the odontogenic keratocyst should be termed as "odontogenic keratocystic tumor" because i…
