Three cases of missile injury to the neck are reported, two homicides and one suicide. In two fatalities, the autopsy revealed contusion of the spinal cord due to direct missile injury of the cervical spine but without laceration of the spinal dura. It was concluded that the temporary cavity following penetration of the bullet caused contusion of the spinal cord with subsequent reflex cardiac arrest. In the suicide case, the entrance wound was in the mouth, the bullet track traversed the pharynx and the cervical spine with complete transection of the cord, and the bullet lodged in the right sc

A man was kicked on the neck, 10 days after which he noted right-sided numbness. Clinically, he had diminished deep tendon reflexes over the left upper limb, absent left superficial abdominal reflexes, a left extensor plantar response, mild left hemiparesis, diminished pinprick, temperature and vibratory sensation up to the right T(4-5) dermatome and diminished proprioceptive sensation in the right upper and lower limbs. Cervicothoracic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a left C(6-7) posterolateral disc prolapse with indentation and oedema of the cord at the same level. He was given in

A 37-year-old right-handed female sustained a minor electric shock to her right hand while changing a bulb in a Kodak Reliant Intelligent Microfilmer 2000. She noted a progressive onset of parasthesias of her right hand that became associated with throbbing pain at rest, as well as swelling and profound weakness of her hand during the next two months. Plethysmography demonstrated arterial vasoconstriction of her right hand. Her reflex sympathetic dystrophy was successfully treated with cervicothoracic sympathetic blocks.

The two vestibular receptors, right and left, hidden in the petrous part of the temporal bone with the cochlear receptors, receive information from angular and linear movements of the head and transform them into a nerve message sent to the nuclei of the brainstem, which are connected directly on the one hand to the oculomotor nuclei, at the origin of the oculovestibular reflex (induction of nystagmus), and on the other hand, to the spinal motor neurons, at the origin of the vestibulospinal reflex. These reflexes are associated with responses to visual and somaesthetic information for maintena

A 72-year-old male noted weakness in the right lower extremity in August 1979, and clumsiness of the finger movement in the right hand in April 1980. In June 1980, he became tetraplegic and was unable to stand or walk. He also developed hypesthesia in the four extremities and difficulty in voiding. On admission to this hospital (July 12, 1980), neurological examination showed spastic tetraparesis, more pronounced on the right side. Deep tendon reflexes were markedly increased in the four extremities. Chaddock reflex in the right lower extremity and Trömner reflex in the both upper extremities

Human physiological tremor consists of mechanical-reflex and neurogenic components. The origin of the neurogenic component, classically detected in the frequency range 7-12 Hz, has been much debated. We have studied six subjects with X-linked Kallmann's syndrome (XKS) and mirror movements. In these subjects unilateral magnetic brain stimulation results in abnormal bilateral EMG responses. Furthermore, abnormal sharing of central nervous inputs between the left and right motoneurone pools results in both abnormal motor unit synchronisation between left and right EMGs and abnormal sharing of lon

A 26-year-old man had complaints of insidiously progressive muscle weakness of the legs, worse in the right leg than in the left. Slight to moderate degrees of asymmetrical muscular atrophy and weakness of the distal lower limb muscles, greater in the right leg than in the left, without fasciculation, were also observed. Pes equinovarus deformity of both feet was obvious. Muscle stretch reflexes were decreased in the upper limbs and absent in the lower limbs, without pathologic reflexes. Vibratory sensation was moderately decreased in the toes. The right median and tibial motor nerve conductio

The phase-dependent modulation pattern of the tibialis anterior (TA) flexion reflex was characterized during treadmill walking while transspinal stimulation was delivered at 15, 30, and 50 Hz above and below paresthesia in healthy participants. The flexion reflex was elicited following medial arch foot stimulation with a 30 ms (300 Hz) pulse train. During treadmill walking, the flexion reflex was evoked in the right leg every 3-5 steps, and stimuli were randomly dispersed across the step cycle that was divided into 16 equal bins. For each participant, condition and bin of the step cycle, the f

To study reflex responses caused by stimulation of pulmonary C-fibers and lung inflation, we used a preparation in which the left pulmonary artery and veins were ligated and cannulated and the right and left bronchi were cannulated separately in open-chest dogs. These experiments were performed to establish whether the reflex responses to injections of 150 micrograms of capsaicin through the left pulmonary circulation and inflations of this left lung to 30 cm H2O would be diminished if repeated frequently. Furthermore, the sensitivities of the reflex responses evoked by these capsaicin injecti

Reading ability requires the coordination of many cognitive processes to be effective, including spatial attention. Recent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) evidence from Ekstrand et al. (2019) suggests that lexical reading is more associated with reflexive attentional orienting regions, whereas sublexical reading is more associated with voluntary attentional orienting regions. The current research sought to further examine the neuroanatomical relationship between reading and attention using a novel experimental design in fMRI. Participants performed four hybrid attentional orientin

BACKGROUND: Chewing and licking are primarily activated by central pattern generator (CPG) neuronal circuits in the brainstem and when activated trigger repetitive rhythmic orofacial movements such as chewing, licking and swallowing. These CPGs are reported to modulate orofacial reflex responses in functions such as chewing.
OBJECTIVE: This study explored the modulation of reflex responses in the anterior and posterior bellies (ant-Dig and post-Dig, respectively) of the digastric muscle evoked by low-intensity trigeminal stimulation in conscious rats.
METHODS: The ant-Dig and post-Dig reflex

Bromantan (N-[2-adamantil]-N-[para-bromphenyl]amine) is an "actoprotective" drug widely used in Russia as a muscle performance-enhancing agent for sportsmen and as an immunostimulator in medicine. Experiments were conducted to determine whether this compound has adverse effects on the reproduction and development of offspring. Sexually mature female rats, weighing 180-200 g, were orally given bromantan at doses of 30 mg/kg (30-mg/kg group), 150 mg/kg (150-mg/kg group) and 600 mg/kg (600-mg/kg group) daily for 16 days, while the controls received the vehicle, amylaceous solution. A patient accidentally exposed to oven microwaves developed an acute and severe dystrophy and sympathetic reflex of the right hand, a peripheral neuropathy of the digits of the left hand, and a sensory injury of the trigeminal nerve in the right side of the face. The physiopathological involvement in the injury of the peripheral nerve and the failure of analgesia with carbamazepine are emphasized. In this causalgia, relief from pain and modification of the autonomic disorders can be achieved by a sympathetic block.

PURPOSE: To assess the trigeminal blink reflex in chronic orbital pain and its modification by orbital anesthetic injections using a novel blink reflexometer.
METHODS: The EyeStat (Generation 3, Blinktbi, Inc. Charleston, SC) is a device that triggers and analyzes the carbon dioxide puff-evoked trigeminal blink response. In this prospective study, CO2 puffs were delivered to each eye of 6 patients with unilateral, chronic orbital pain at baseline and 30 minutes after unilateral orbital anesthetic injections consisting of lidocaine and bupivacaine. Ten healthy subjects underwent the testing on

We report on a patient who presented with cranial nerve VI bilateral paresis, absence of pharyngeal reflex, dysarthria, right tongue deviation, and right facial paralysis. Imaging studies showed an expansive process in the cranial base with clivus and petrous apex osteolysis. A biopsy confirmed the presence of clear cell adenocarcinoma and suspicion of renal tumor metastases. Abdominal imaging studies revealed a mass in the right kidney. Consequently, radiotherapy was performed, and the patient was enrolled in a palliative care and pain control program.

The differential diagnosis of spinal tumors is guided by anatomical location and imaging characteristics. Diagnosis of rare tumors is made challenging by abnormal features. The authors present the case of a 47-year-old woman who presented with progressive subacute right lower-extremity weakness and numbness of the right thigh. Physical examination further revealed an extensor response to plantar reflex on the right and hyporeflexia of the right Achilles and patellar reflexes. Magnetic resonance imaging of the lumbar spine demonstrated an 8-mm intramedullary exophytic nodule protruding into a h

The objective of this study was to assess changes in monosynaptic motoneuron responses to stimulation of Ia afferents after locomotor training in individuals with chronic spinal cord injury (SCI). We hypothesized that locomotor training modifies the amplitude of the soleus monosynaptic motoneuron responses in a body position-dependent manner. Fifteen individuals with chronic clinical motor complete or incomplete SCI received an average of 45 locomotor training sessions. The soleus H-reflex and M-wave recruitment curves were assembled using data collected in both the right and left legs, with s
