[Convergent strabismus in the age of presbyopia (author's transl)].

Based on 15 case reports it can be shown, that the onset of a convergent squint is even possible in the age of presbyopia, independent of the patient's refraction. The clinical picture resembles that of a divergence paralysis or the convergent strabismus of the Bielschowsky type. In 13 cases the decompensation of a previous esophoria may have caused this distance-esodeviation; a divergence paralysis is not probable. In two cases change of orthophoria to esotropia could be observed. Therefore we share the opinion of v. Graefe, that an increased tonicity of the internal recti induced for compens

A longitudinal study of the biometric and refractive changes in full-term infants during the first year of life.

Changes in ocular axial dimensions and refraction were followed longitudinally, using ultrasonography and retinoscopy, during the first year of life (mean ages 4-53 weeks) of a group of 20 full-term infants (10 male, 10 female). Using a mixed-model regression analysis, axial length changes as a function of time were found to be best described by a quadratic expression (AL=17.190+0.128x-0.0013x(2), where AL is the axial length in mm and x is the age in weeks), while anterior chamber depth changed linearly (ACD=2.619+0.018x, where ACD is the anterior chamber depth in mm): lens thickness was esse

Status of visual impairment among indigenous (Orang Asli) school children in Malaysia.

BACKGROUND: School children are considered a high-risk group for visual impairment because uncorrected refractive errors and problems such as amblyopia can seriously affect their learning abilities and their physical and mental development. There are many studies reporting the prevalence of refractive errors among school children of different ethnic groups in Malaysia, however, studies concerning the prevalence of refractive errors among indigenous or Orang Asli children are very limited. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the prevalence and causes of visual impairment amo

Corneal Refractive Surgery in Patients with a History of Herpes Simplex Keratitis: A Narrative Review.

The incidence of herpes simplex keratitis (HSK) in patients following corneal refractive surgery is higher than in the general population, and several case reports of ocular morbidity in HSK infection following corneal refractive surgery have been published. HSK is listed by the American Academy of Ophthalmology as a relative contraindication to corneal refractive surgery, although specifics have not been further elucidated. This review summarizes the current literature regarding reactivation of HSK following corneal refractive surgery and provides a guideline for considering corneal refractiv

Scleral lens for severe dry eye status post lacrimal gland resection for adenoid cystic carcinoma.

PURPOSE: Scleral contact lenses (SCLs) are devices that allow a fluid reservoir between the contact lens and the cornea, providing both improved lubrication and refraction. Consequently, SCLs have been used for significant refractive error in addition to a wide range of ocular surface diseases. We present the first case of a woman who complained of severe dryness and pain following resection of an adenoid cystic carcinoma of her lacrimal gland with complete resolution of her symptoms with a SCL. OBSERVATIONS: A woman who complained of severe dryness and pain following resection of an adenoid

Intra-ocular lens implantation in children.

Intra-ocular lens (IOL) implantation in a growing eye of a young child brings several problems unique to this age group. Better understanding of the rate of refractive growth in children's pseudophakic eyes may help predicting future refractions in these eyes more accurately. Opacification of the posterior capsule, if remained intact, interferes with visual rehabilitation in children. Primary posterior capsulectomy and anterior vitrectomy provides the clarity of visual axis. Optical rehabilitation of children with unilateral aphakia is usually problematic. Posterior chamber IOLs are preferred
