Depression and anxiety among Cambodian refugee women in France and the United States.

This study reports on Cambodian refugee data related to signs symptomatic of depression and anxiety, the tendency to worry or ruminate over past events (a culture-bound syndrome called "Khoucherang"), and differences that might be influenced by social system and cultural practice. A sample consisting of 155 women of Cambodian national origin were interviewed in their homes in the USA and France. Answers to the research questions were collected by a focused interview to elicit demographic information, and the Hopkins Symptom Checklist (HSCL) in the Cambodian language to elicit depression and an

Medicaid Eligibility Changes and Continuity of Care for Refugees with Disabilities and Chronic Health Conditions.

The 2025 Tax and Budget Law (Public Law 119 - 21 [H.R. 1]) introduces Medicaid eligibility changes affecting several humanitarian groups, including refugees. These changes may have important implications for refugees with disabilities and chronic health conditions, who often depend on continuous access to healthcare during a critical period of resettlement. This article discusses the potential effects of changes to Medicaid eligibility on continuity of care and highlights administrative considerations for state governments, federal agencies, healthcare systems, and resettlement organizations. …

Social support coping strategies among sub-Saharan African refugees: A systematic review and meta-synthesis.

Social support is a key coping resource; its specific role for refugees from sub-Saharan Africa in high-income settings remains poorly understood. This systematic review synthesises existing evidence on the sources of social support and how these networks aid coping during resettlement. We applied an optimised search strategy to identify studies examining social support among sub-Saharan African refugees across six academic indexing databases. We then undertook a meta-synthesis of the identified studies. This involved the use of meta-thematic analysis of the interpretations and quotes presente…

Plasmodium falciparum infections and number needed to screen among refugees arriving from sub-Saharan Africa.

BACKGROUND: Migrants from malaria-endemic countries, especially sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), may harbour parasites at low density in peripheral blood when relocating to non-endemic countries. This study aimed to estimate the number of subclinical malaria infections in SSA refugees arriving to Sweden, and the number needed to screen (NNS) to identify one case. METHODS: Country-specific age-standardized prevalences of Plasmodium falciparum infections from the Malaria Atlas Project (MAP) were applied to demographic data on SSA refugees who had recently arrived in Sweden, 2015-22. Indirect estimates…

Screening for infectious diseases and vaccination status in Ukrainian paediatric refugees: a retrospective cohort study.

Paediatric refugees face heightened health risks. At the same time, lack of real-world data hampers the development of evidence-based guidelines for their health care providers. The aim of the study was to assess health-care data and guideline adherence regarding paediatric Ukrainian refugees. Demographic and health-related data were collected from paediatric Ukrainian refugees who arrived in Switzerland between 24 February and 31 October 2022. Data was obtained from five participating centres. Information on infectious disease screening tests and vaccination status was extracted from a REDCap…

HIV-Tuberculosis Co-Infection Among Immigrants and Refugees in the United States: An Integrative Review.

HIV-tuberculosis (HIV-TB) co-infection remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among people living with HIV and disproportionately affects immigrant and refugee communities in the United States. While antiretroviral therapy has improved HIV outcomes, cultural, social, and psychological barriers hinder timely diagnosis and sustained HIV-TB co-infection care in these populations. This integrative review aims to synthesize evidence on cultural, social, and psychological factors influencing access to diagnosis, treatment, and management of HIV, TB, and HIV-TB co-infection among immigran

Predictors of caregiver support intervention outcomes for refugees in Jordan: a three-path mediational study.

BACKGROUND: More evidence is needed for understanding how evidence-based psychological interventions work, especially when implemented by briefly trained non-professionals in low- and middle-income settings. The nine-session caregiver support intervention (CSI) is such an evidence-based intervention, aiming to improve parental wellbeing and parenting skills. Specifically, this study aims to assess if and how a set of quality of care indicators explain intervention outcomes amongst participants from refugee settlements in Jordan. METHODS: We conducted a three-path mediational model, wherein le

Are We All Post Traumatic Yet? A Critical Narrative Review of Trauma Among Arab Refugees.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is one of the most studied, diagnosed, and treated mental health disorders in settings of war and displacement. A large body of literature has questioned the utility of the PTSD framework and its application to traumatic stress among populations experiencing wars, political violence, and displacement that is chronic and on a population level. No review has yet summarized the conceptual alternatives proposed by scholars for refugees in or from the Arab region. Our article reviews conceptual articles from the last three decades that propose alternative frame…

Post-traumatic growth in refugees and internally displaced persons worldwide: systematic review and meta-analysis.

Introduction: Globally, millions of people are forced to flee their home nation due to war, conflict, political instability, natural disasters or persecution every year. The detrimental psychological issues that refugees experience are well established, whilst research on positive psychological well-being, such as Post-Traumatic Growth, is limited. This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to synthesise the peer-reviewed literature which quantitatively measured PTG in refugees and Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) and present factors associated with PTG in this population. Methods: The fol…

Clinical and screening tools for psychic illness in asylum seekers and refugees: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND: According to UNHCR, at the end of June 2024 there were 8 million asylum seekers and 43.7 million refugees worldwide, a 16% increase versus year end 2023 for both categories; these rapidly growing numbers are posing significant political, humanitarian, and healthcare challenges. These are persons who have been displaced due to wars, persecution, political and economic instability, climate change, and other disasters. Trauma, an inevitable consequence of forced displacement, is a crucial factor in the development of psychiatric diseases, causing short and long-term synaptic alteratio…

Associations between Functional Disability and Chronic Conditions with Depressive Symptoms in Vietnamese-Origin Older Refugees.

Previous studies have found a strong association between activities of daily living (ADL)/instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) disability, chronic conditions, and depressive symptoms, and these associations with specific disability and diseases varied by racial/ethnic groups. However, information is unavailable on these associations, especially with the older generation of refugee populations. Authors examined the association and explored which disability and chronic diseases might be associated with depressive symptoms among 208 Vietnamese-origin older adults (≥65 years) from the Vi

'Having children is like rain, as they say in our region': exploring refugees' reproductive agency.

Migrants with refugee backgrounds in the Netherlands face significant reproductive health challenges, including higher rates of unintended pregnancies and limited access to contraception. This study explores how post-migration realities affect the reproductive agency of refugees from Afghanistan, Somalia, Eritrea and Syria. Utilising a participatory approach, eight peer researchers from these communities conducted eight focus-group discussions and 118 in-depth interviews, involving four migrant grassroots organisations and two Dutch non-governmental organisations. The findings reveal that refu…
