Children's explanations for success shape implicit bias.

Children's social preferences often mirror societal hierarchies, favoring higher-status and more successful groups. How children explain why some groups succeed while others do not may contribute to the development of these preferences. Attributing disparities to internal factors, such as effort or ability, risks instilling bias, whereas recognizing structural differences in access to opportunity may mitigate it. Across two studies, we examined children's reasoning about internal and structural explanations for a novel group disparity and whether these explanations impacted their social evalua

Doing Well and Doing Good: Achievement and Social Life Goals of Gifted Korean Youths.

This study examined life-goal profiles among Korean gifted adolescents, focusing on two domains: achievement/career-oriented goals and social/relationship-oriented goals. Rather than assuming that gifted students are uniformly performance-driven, the study explored whether students who strongly endorsed both goal domains (dual-goal orientation) differed from students who reported comparatively lower endorsement of both domains (low-goal orientation). Independent-samples t-tests results indicated that the students from the two goal profile groups differed across several domains of academic and

Psychological detachment in Chinese higher education: a multitheoretical model of academic stress, cultural pressure, and coping resources.

Psychological detachment-the ability to mentally disengage from academic demands during non-study time-remains elusive for Chinese university students, intensified by cultural norms that equate disengagement with weakness and by institutional systems reinforcing constant connectivity. This study integrates the Stressor-Strain-Outcome Model, Conservation of Resources Theory, and Cognitive Appraisal Theory to examine how academic perfectionism, social comparison anxiety, digital burnout, and filial piety stress affect detachment. The mediating roles of resilience, self-esteem, and perceived soci

Invisible Violations: An Exploratory Study into Public Sentiments on Nonconsensual Distribution of Intimate Images in Trinidad and Tobago.

Nonconsensual distribution of intimate images (NDII), commonly misrepresented as "revenge porn," is a growing form of cyber harassment and online sexual violence that disproportionately affects women and challenges traditional social frameworks. Despite increasing global research on NDII, Caribbean-based studies remain scarce, leaving critical gaps in understanding how regional cultural norms, gender roles, and legal structures shape public perceptions of this phenomenon. This study employs a mixed-methods approach to examine public attitudes toward NDII in Trinidad and Tobago, analyzing demog

Vaccination: a look at the social representations of Brazilian children.

INTRODUCTION: The pandemic caused by COVID-19 has accentuated the debate on the need for vaccination and called into question the need to increasingly bring this topic, which is widely disseminated in the scientific world, to school classes at all schooling phases. In this scenario, science education plays a key role in disseminating knowledge about the importance of vaccination and the impacting factors of a lack of immunization. In order to better understand this movement, it is necessary to understand the representations of individuals as a way of broadening paths to change this scenario.

Living through and with the global HIV/AIDS pandemic: Distinct 'pandemic practices' and temporalities.

In this study, we expand on the newly devised sociological concept of pandemic practices that emerged during the COVID-19 outbreak by applying it to the HIV/AIDS pandemic. The analytical heuristic of pandemic practices distinguishes between four kinds of practices: (i) primary practices that encompass the public's direct response to the pandemic, (ii) responsive practices that encompass altered routines and social interactions, (iii) adaptive practices that encompass more elusive organisational and legal legacies and (iv) meta-practices that produce particular narratives about the pandemic dyn

Domains of Awareness in Young and Late Onset Dementia.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of research investigating whether there are differences in the domains of awareness according to the age at onset of dementia. OBJECTIVE: This study is designed to investigate differences in awareness of cognitive functioning and health condition, functional activity impairments, emotional state, and social functioning and relationships among people with young onset (YOD) and late onset dementia (LOD); and examine associations between awareness and its domains with cognition, functionality, neuropsychiatric symptoms, social and emotional functioning, and quality of

Contraceptive Conversations among Adolescent Girls and Young Women and Their Partners, Peers, and Older Female Family Members in Lilongwe, Malawi: A QualitativeAnalysis.

In sub-Saharan Africa, adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) have high levels of unmet need for contraception, particularly those who are unmarried or nulliparous. Conversations with partners, peers, and family members influence AGYW contraceptive decision-making yet little is known about conversation content and impact or how they vary by relationship status and parity. This paper draws on qualitative data from 60 AGYW (aged 15-24) participating in a sexual and reproductive health study in Malawi to examine contraceptive conversation patterns among participants and their social ties. AGYW's

Three- and bi-dimensional analyses of the shoaling behavior in zebrafish: Influence of modulators of anxiety-like responses.

Social behaviors are key components that play adaptive roles in various species, including humans. The zebrafish (Danio rerio) is a social species and the shoaling behavior can be pharmacologically manipulated either by anxiogenic or anxiolytic substances, providing translatable data in neuropsychiatric research. Here, we aimed to characterize the shoaling behavior in zebrafish under different pharmacological manipulations in a three-dimensional (3D) perspective using the spatial coordinates of the fish positions. Temporal and spatial reconstructions of shoal occupancy were performed after exp

Dopaminergic and serotonergic modulation of social reward appraisal in zebrafish (Danio rerio) under circumstances of motivational conflict: Towards a screening test for anti-compulsive drug action.

Cognitive flexibility, shown to be impaired in patients presenting with compulsions, is dependent on balanced dopaminergic and serotonergic interaction. Towards the development of a zebrafish (Danio rerio) screening test for anti-compulsive drug action, we manipulated social reward appraisal under different contexts by means of dopaminergic (apomorphine) and serotonergic (escitalopram) intervention. Seven groups of zebrafish (n = 6 per group) were exposed for 24 days (1 h per day) to either control (normal tank water), apomorphine (50 or 100 μg/L), escitalopram (500 or 1000 μg/L) or a combinat

Ethical analysis of organ recovery denials by medical examiners, coroners, and justices of the peace.

CONTEXT: Despite its pivotal nature, until the early 1990s the role of medical examiners, coroners, and justices of the peace was largely ignored in discussions of the critical shortage of organs for transplantation in the United States. These officials have the right to determine, from a medico-legal perspective, whether a deceased person can be an organ donor. Thus, they play an important role in the donation process. Using a principles-based ethical framework, this article examines the problem of nonrecovery of life-saving organs for transplantation in the United States because a medical ex

Reward learning in prolonged grief: Evidence from the probabilistic reward task.

BACKGROUND: Deficits in reward processing have been proposed as a mechanism contributing to the persistence of prolonged grief disorder (PGD). The probabilistic reward task (PRT) is a well-validated behavioural paradigm for examining reward learning. In this study, we used the PRT to investigate whether reward learning is affected in bereaved adults with probable PGD compared to bereaved controls. METHOD: Bereaved adults with probable PGD (n = 55) and bereaved controls (n = 56) completed the PRT. Reward learning was assessed using signal detection indices, reaction time (RT) distribution anal

From Shouting to Calm Conversations: A Qualitative Study of Family Communication Transformation Through a Culturally Adapted Multiple Family Group Therapy in HIV-Affected Families in Ghana.

Family communication dysfunction significantly impacts HIV medication adherence and mental health outcomes among adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa, yet evidence-based family interventions remain scarce in resource-limited settings. This qualitative descriptive study examined family communication transformation following culturally adapted Multiple Family Group Therapy (MFGT) for adolescents living with HIV and their families in rural Ghana. Focus group discussions were conducted with 20 caregivers and 19 adolescents who completed the 11-session intervention. All core therapeutic content was de

Evaluation and Maintenance of Behavioral Interventions for 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome.

22q11.2-deletion syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by a small deletion of chromosome 22. This deletion often results in developmental delays, learning disabilities, medical conditions, and comorbid psychiatric conditions. Patients with 22q11.2DS may present with a variety of behavioral phenotypes including obsessiveness and rigidity, poor social skills, and anxiety. In some cases, the phenotype can consist of destructive and inappropriate behavior including harming self and others. Behavioral difficulties are reported as one of the most challenging aspects of 22q11.2-deletion syndrome for

Homeless encampments: connecting public health and human rights.

The COVID-19 pandemic is exacerbating longstanding issues related to homelessness, including lack of affordable housing, unemployment, poverty, wealth inequality, and ongoing impacts of colonization. Homelessness is often accompanied by narratives rooted in individual blame, criminalization, and reinforcement of substance use and mental health-related stigma. Visible homelessness, in the form of encampments, is a manifestation of government policy failures that neglect to uphold the human right to housing, and demonstrate eroding investments in affordable housing, income and systemic supports.

Voxel-based morphometry analysis of structural brain scans in skin-picking disorder.

BACKGROUND: Skin-picking disorder (SPD) is characterized by the excessive and repetitive manipulation of one's own skin resulting in tissue damage and impaired social functioning. There are only a few studies with small sample sizes that examined possible brain abnormalities in SPD, which is classified as a syndrome related to obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD). METHOD: The current voxel-based morphometry (VBM) study compared data from 35 SPD patients and 35 control participants including both genders (mean age = 35 years, SD = 15). In addition, patients' self-reports on symptom severity, d

A Review on Functional Analyses of Tics.

Tic disorders are characterized by a class of responses assumed to be neurobiological in origin. Still, several studies have shown that tic frequency can be influenced by antecedent environmental events and social consequences. Prior reviews have summarized the effects of environmental events but have not examined relations between tic diagnosis, behavioral deficits (e.g., intellectual disability), tic topography, and the consequences observed to maintain tics. These variables might be important when attempting to predict or identify relevant consequences. A more thorough understanding of the

Adapted to explore: reinforcement learning in Autistic Spectrum Conditions.

Recent studies have recorded a tendency of individuals with Autism Spectrum Conditions (ASC) to continually change their choices in repeated choice tasks. In the current study we examine if this finding implies that ASC individuals have a cognitive style that facilitates exploration and discovery. Six decision tasks were administered to adolescents with ASC and matched controls. Significant differences in shifting between choice options appeared in the Iowa Gambling task (Bechara, Damasio, Damasio, & Anderson, 1994). A formal cognitive modeling analysis demonstrated that for about half of the
