Eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders.

Eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders (EGID) are frequently encountered by the practicing allergist/immunologist. This is due to the occurrence of the disorders in atopic subjects and because research has indicated that atopy-related genes, inflammatory cells, and mediators play a role in the pathogenesis of the disorders. The role of the allergist/immunologist includes making the diagnosis by eliciting the symptoms in the history and defining the atopic phenotype of the subject with regard to food and environmental allergens, using skin testing and possibly patch tests. Obtaining a tissue d

Clinical assessment of adventitious movements.

Many procedures with variable validity and reliability have been developed in research settings to evaluate adventitious movements and related phenomena in specific populations, e.g., people with schizophrenia treated with dopamine antagonists, but these only provide global assessments or rate specific movements. A battery for rating individuals with possible movements disorders in a comprehensive way in clinical settings is needed so a protocol to assess briefly and thoroughly potential movement disorders was videotaped for five prepubertal boys with autistic disorder and severe mental retard

Naltrexone: physiological and psychological effects of single doses.

An ascending series of single doses of the narcotic antagonist naltrexone, ranging from 20 to 160 mg, was administered to 8 abstinent former addicts in order to assess agonistic activity and any toxic side effects. There was little alteration of normal body function. Significant, but small, changes in sublingual temperature (0.4 degrees F decrease), and diastolic blood pressure (1.7 mm Hg increase) were induced. Among the battery of tests assessing behavioral or mood-feeling variables, only 2 showed significant between-condition effects: facilitated performance on the Cross-out Test (attention

Diving into Relevance: How Deep Sea Researchers Articulate Societal Relevance within their Epistemic Living Spaces.

The deep sea is many things: a subject of both fascination and indifference; a realm of great unknowns and scientific inquiry; and a source of untapped potential and looming exploitation. Its multifaceted nature is also visible in scientific research on the deep sea. While traditional relevance narratives in the field of deep sea research centred around fundamental knowledge creation, calls for doing societally relevant research are intensifying. The field is currently in transition regarding its understanding of societally relevant research, as it has been criticised for failing to provide na

The relationship between muscular atrophy/sarcopenia and cardiovascular diseases in the elderly: a bibliometrics study.

BACKGROUND: As the aging population continues to increase worldwide, the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases and muscular dystrophy/sarcopenia in the elderly has escalated significantly. Cardiovascular diseases elevate the risk of muscular atrophy/sarcopenia, which results in increased disability and mortality of patients. This study analyzed the current available literature related to the relationship between cardiovascular diseases and muscular atrophy/sarcopenia in the aging population. METHODS: The Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-E) database was searched for related literature publ

Are the sagittal cervical radiographic modifiers of the Ames-ISSG classification specific to adult cervical deformity?

OBJECTIVEThe Ames-International Spine Study Group (ISSG) classification has recently been proposed as a tool for adult cervical deformity evaluation. This classification includes three radiographic cervical sagittal modifiers that have not been evaluated in asymptomatic adults. The aim of this study was to determine whether the sagittal radiographic modifiers described in the Ames-ISSG cervical classification are encountered in asymptomatic adults without alteration of health-related quality of life (HRQOL).METHODSThe authors conducted a cross-sectional study of subjects with an age ≥ 18 years

Pre-Transplant Calcimimetic Use and Dose Information Improves the Accuracy of Prediction of Tertiary Hyperparathyroidism after Kidney Transplantation: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

The subject of transmissible spongiform encephalopathy may properly be said to have begun with the experimental transmission of scrapie by Cuillé and Chelle in 1936, although Creutzfeldt and Jakob had described the disease that bears their names in 1920-21. Thirty more years passed before the human disease was also shown to be transmissible, in 1966, and the following half century has seen the field move from classical biology to molecular biology and genetics, and from 'slow virus' to host-encoded 'prion' protein. Because nothing is more important to the research scientist than the process of

Self-compassion, the 'quiet ego' and materialism.

The research is an investigation of self-compassion and materialism. Self-compassion is when an individual has a caring, non-judgmental view of the self. This quality has been related to lower depression, less negative emotion and higher psychological health (Neff, 2003). Materialism has been consistently associated with low subjective well-being and unhappiness. A related concept is that of the 'quiet ego', which is a less competitive, less self-centered individual with more concern with connecting with others and with personal growth (Wayment et al., 2015). Therefore, it is hypothesized that

Revised associative inference paradigm confirms relational memory impairment in schizophrenia.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with schizophrenia have widespread cognitive impairments, with selective deficits in relational memory. We previously reported a differential relational memory deficit in schizophrenia using the Associative Inference Paradigm (AIP), a task suggested by the Cognitive Neuroscience Treatment Research to Improve Cognition in Schizophrenia (CNTRICS) initiative to examine relational memory. However, the AIP had limited feasibility for testing in schizophrenia because of high attrition of schizophrenia patients during training. Here we developed and tested a revised version of the

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) symptom emergence across the cycle in relation to hormonal and psychological components in a community sample.

For many individuals, the days leading up to menstruation are associated with aversive mood, behavioral, and physical symptoms, a condition known as premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Severe levels of these symptoms can lead to clinical diagnosis of premenstrual dysphoria (PMDD). Although prior research has uncovered important psychological and hormonal predictors of PMS/PMDD symptoms in clinical populations, more research is needed to understand how these factors relate in a subclinical population. A test of the menstrual timing and hormonal links to symptom experience alongside factors related to

Patent Review (2017-2020) of the Keap1/Nrf2 Pathway Using PatSeer Pro: Focus on Autoimmune Diseases.

Research on the antioxidant pathway comprising the transcription factor nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and its cytoplasmic inhibitor Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1) is ever increasing. As modulators of this pathway have started to be used in clinical trials and clinical practice, Nrf2 has become the subject of several patents. To assess the patent landscape of the last three years on Nrf2 and evaluate the main fields they refer to, we used the web-based tool PatSeer Pro to identify patents mentioning the Nrf2 pathway between January 2017 and May 2020. Quantifying Subject-Identity Variance in Spectral EEG Features and Its Role in Machine Learning Evaluation Leakage.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is widely used to study cognitive states and clinical biomarkers, yet the contribution of stable between-subject differences to common EEG feature representations is rarely quantified directly or incorporated into evaluation design. Here, we examine subject-linked structure in spectral EEG features using a longitudinal four-session dataset spanning 199 days and replicate key findings across four public datasets covering 39 to 395 participants, multiple paradigms, and recording systems ranging from low-channel consumer devices to research-grade EEG. In spectral band

Comparison of triazolam and pentobarbital: performance impairment, subjective effects and abuse liability.

On a residential research ward, the acute effects of placebo, 0.5 to 3.0 mg of triazolam (TZ) and 100 to 600 mg of pentobarbital (PTB) were examined using a within-subject, double-blind design in male volunteers with documented histories of drug abuse. Drug effects were examined through the use of subject ratings including measures of drug liking and estimates of street value, staff ratings, objective psychomotor/cognitive performance measures, subject estimates of performance, immediate and delayed recognition memory tasks and subject ratings of nighttime sleep quality. Money or love? The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on consumer life goals and subjective well-being.

The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly changed how consumers live. This research investigated the impact of the pandemic on two important life goals-material versus relational goals-as well as their subsequent consequences on consumer subjective well-being (SWB). We conducted a three-wave longitudinal study and recruited 1567 participants from mainland China during the pandemic. Cross-lagged model results showed that consumers' perceived threat of the pandemic was positively related to the importance placed on material and relational goals, which conduced to divergent effects on consumer SWB. Sleep-disordered breathing with chronic opioid use.

Chronic opioid use for pain relief or as substitution therapy for illicit drug abuse is prevalent in our societies. In the US, retail distribution of methadone and oxycodone has increased by 824 and 660%, respectively, between 1997 and 2003. Mu-opioids depress respiration and deaths related to illicit and non illicit chronic opioid use are not uncommon. Since 2001 there has been an emerging literature that suggests that chronic opioid use is related to central sleep apnoea of both periodic and non-periodic breathing types, and occurs in approximately 30% of these subjects. The clinical signifi

Identification of Barriers and Needs in the Discontinuation of Benzodiazepine Receptor Agonists in Elderly Patients of a Rural Community-A Qualitative Study.

Background/Objectives: The predictors of successful discontinuation of benzodiazepine agonist receptors (BZRA) in elderly patients are not well known due to lack of research on the subject, and there is a need for further investigation, with more focus from the patients' point of view. No previous studies were identified that have been conducted in Portugal on this subject. We proposed to identify the barriers and facilitators in the discontinuation of BZRA from the perceptions of elderly patients under prolonged prescription of BZRA, belonging to the same rural community. The contributions fo

Uncovering the boundary conditions of the association between concerns about falling and physical activity in adult populations: a scoping review protocol.

IntroductionDespite evidence of variation in how concerns about falling influence physical activity, many of the currently available knowledge syntheses merely assume that this relation is uniform across populations and contexts. Therefore, we propose a scoping review protocol to guide a summary of the bodywork that has examined the association between concerns about falling and physical activity in adult populations, with an eye on the availability of empirical evidence of moderation. Methods and analysesStudies reporting on both the concepts of concerns about falling and physical activity amo
