California Healthy Places Index and COVID-19 hospitalization risk: a patient-level analysis.

BACKGROUND: Research has shown that inequalities in COVID-19 outcomes are influenced by individual-level characteristics and specific measures of neighborhood characteristics. Understanding the association between composite neighborhood-level social determinants of health, particularly newly developed determinant indices, and COVID-19 outcomes is important. The objective of this study is to contribute to the literature by evaluating the association between the California Healthy Places Index (HPI)-an extensive yet relatively underutilized measure of neighborhood health and well-being-and a sig

Neighborhood obesogenic factors and breast cancer risk and mortality in the Southern community cohort study.

Obesity is an established risk factor for many cancers, including breast cancer. However, the complex nature of the underlying mechanisms, coupled with the interaction between individual characteristics and neighborhood obesogenic attributes, contributes to an energy imbalance and a sedentary lifestyle, promoting obesity. This has posed a challenge to our understanding of neighborhood obesogenic attributes associated with this increased risk of breast cancer. We aim to examine how neighborhood attributes affect breast cancer risk and prognosis in the Southern Community Cohort Study (SCCS). We

A topography-sensitive 2SFCA approach to measuring accessibility to active living infrastructure and its association with health-enhancing physical activity.

INTRODUCTION: Pedestrian accessibility to neighborhood infrastructure is associated with Physical Activity (PA), yet the built environment is often evaluated as separate facility types, while accessibility measures may not jointly capture population demand and topographic walking burden. This study therefore examined PA in relation to a composite Active Living Infrastructure (ALI) measure that integrates five facility types and applies a Topography-Sensitive Two-Step Floating Catchment Area (T-S2SFCA) model, which weighs facility supply against population demand while adjusting walking distanc

Subjective socioeconomic status moderates the relationship between objective neighborhood disadvantage and quality of life in middle- and older-aged women with breast cancer.

PURPOSE: Living in a disadvantaged neighborhood is linked to higher mortality rates and poorer quality of life (QoL) among patients with breast cancer (BC). Subjective socioeconomic status (SSS), reflecting one's perceived socioeconomic "rank" or social standing relative to others, may be associated with differences in the relationship between objective neighborhood disadvantage and QoL. Therefore, we sought to evaluate whether SSS moderated the association between objective neighborhood disadvantage and QoL in middle- and older-aged women undergoing BC treatment. METHODS: Women (≥ 50yrs) dia

Barriers to access to over-the-counter oral contraceptives by neighborhood social vulnerability in Boston, Massachusetts.

Oral contraceptives are widely used in the US, but prescription requirements are an access barrier, particularly for adolescents and young adults. Over-the-counter availability of norgestrel 0.075 mg (OPill) was anticipated to improve contraceptive access. This cross-sectional study assessed OPill availability in 17 Boston zip codes, stratified by Social Vulnerability Index (SVI). Among 33 pharmacies, 75.8% presented at least one barrier to access. OPill was available in all stores in low-SVI neighborhoods but not stocked in 13.6% of pharmacies in high-SVI neighborhoods, compounding low access

Neighborhood socioeconomic deprivation is associated with operative spinal neoplasms: a cross-sectional analysis of 1,038 patients.

OBJECTIVE: Socioeconomic deprivation is increasingly recognized as a determinant of care, yet its relationship to spine surgery remains poorly characterized. The Area Deprivation Index (ADI) provides a validated, neighborhood-level measure of socioeconomic disadvantage. This study characterizes ADI's associations among patients undergoing posterior spine surgery. METHODS: 1,038 adult patients who underwent posterior spine surgery at a quaternary academic center between 2022 and 2024 were included in the retrospective cross-sectional study. National- and state-level ADI ranks were linked to ad

Civic Engagement, Positive Organizational Sentiment, and Health in Baltimore, Maryland.

While the presence of organizations in neighborhoods has been widely studied, studies have generally not considered whether sentiment toward neighborhood organizations might be associated with public health. Neglecting this affective dimension of organizations limits our grasp on the influence of organizations on processes that mitigate or exacerbate health disparities. We used the 2023 Baltimore Area Survey (weighted n = 1,135,389 adults) to assess whether respondents viewed nearby businesses, nearby nonprofits, and local government positively and whether "positive organization sentiment" was

Evaluation of household knowledge, attitudes and practices concerning malaria in the city of Djibouti.

This study presents the first Knowledge Attitudes, and Practices (KAP) survey on malaria in Djibouti City. It was conducted among 1,344 household heads across nine neighbourhoods in Djibouti City. Composite scores were calculated for each KAP dimension. Analysis of variance and multinomial logistic regression identified socio-demographic predictors and Local Indicators of Spatial Association (LISA) characterised the spatial clustering of the KAP scores. No significant association was found between sociodemographic or economic factors and malaria knowledge. Prevention practices varied notably a

Neighborhood deprivation and cardiometabolic risk factors in people living with HIV in urban South Africa.

Neighborhood deprivation has been shown in the United States to be associated with prevalence of chronic diseases, including cardiometabolic risk factors. The impact of neighborhood deprivation on people living with HIV in populations in sub-Saharan Africa is not well understood, and further, there are no studies exploring such associations with other comorbidities. Adult patients living with HIV (n = 22,253), who attended a public health clinic in nine ward areas of Johannesburg, South Africa, and completed an intake survey between 2022 and 2024, were included in the study. We used multi-leve

Neighborhood walkability and cardiometabolic disease in Texas.

Cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs) affect significant numbers of adults in the United States, with 11% diagnosed with diabetes and 10% with cardiovascular diseases. Walking plays a crucial role in reducing health risks, particularly obesity and diabetes. We aim to explore the association between neighborhood walkability and CMD measures in Texas, while controlling for age, sex, racial/ethnic background, and family history of diabetes. We collected 1994 observations for the year 2019, merging data from the Texas Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System and the Environmental Protection Agency. We

Predicting the Use of New Multi-Use Trails and Parks in Historically Black, Low-Income Neighborhoods: The Role of Interpersonal Discussion and Civic Engagement.

BACKGROUND: Residents of historically Black low-income neighborhoods experience disproportionately poorer health. Public infrastructure redevelopment projects (eg, multi-use trails, parks, and public transportation) may improve quality of life and health outcomes in these neighborhoods. OBJECTIVES: The current study draws from communication infrastructure theory to examine the role of interpersonal discussion and civic engagement (belonging, collective efficacy) in intentions to use newly built trails and parks for physical activity. METHODS: Community-based survey data from 398 randomly sel

Neighborhood-based Social Determinants of Health are Associated With Decreased Helmet Use in Young Children.

PURPOSE: We sought to determine the association between neighborhood-level social determinants of health (SDoH) and protective helmet use for young children involved in bicycle, scooter, and skateboard crashes. We hypothesized that children from disadvantaged communities would be less likely to be wearing helmets at the time of their crash. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was performed of all children ≤10 years old who presented after bicycle, scooter, and skateboard crashes to a single Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center (7/1/2017-6/30/2021). Age-Related Deficits in Mobility Resilience With an Extreme Weather and Climate Event.

IMPORTANCE: Mobility, defined as the ability to move freely, decreases with increasing age. The increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather and climate events (EWCEs), such as hurricanes, pose a considerable risk for older adults (aged ≥65 years) to maintain their mobility (ie, mobility resilience). OBJECTIVE: To examine whether an association exists between older-aged neighborhoods and mobility resilience following an EWCE. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This case series study used 2022 demographics with prospectively observed social infrastructure point-of-interest visitation

Crime and chance: Understanding the relationship between neighbourhood crime and gambling.

OBJECTIVES: Gambling is a significant public health issue with complex socioeconomic determinants. While previous research has explored the individual and environmental factors influencing gambling behaviour, the relationship between crime and gambling remains underexamined with previous focus mainly on the impact of gambling on crime. Here we examine the impact of neighbourhood crime on gambling. STUDY DESIGN: Observational longitudinal study. METHODS: Longitudinal data from the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) survey were used. These data were merged with neighbou

Assessment of Tuberculosis Infection-Related Outpatient Clinical Outcomes Across Neighborhood-Level Deprivation Quartiles.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric tuberculosis infection (TBI) disproportionately affects those in complex social situations. Neighborhood characteristics may influence access to care and TBI-related outcomes. We sought to examine links between neighborhood-level socioeconomic deprivation and clinical outcomes. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we identified children with TBI treated at our pediatric infectious diseases clinics between 2012 and 2023. We geocoded each child's address to identify neighborhood-level material community deprivation index (MCDI) scores. Outcomes included missed clin

Effects of residential socioeconomic polarization on high blood pressure among nursing home residents.

OBJECTIVE: Neighborhood concentration of racial, income, education, and housing deprivation is known to be associated with higher rates of hypertension. The objective of this study is to examine the association between tract-level spatial social polarization and hypertension in a cohort with relatively equal access to health care, a Veterans Affairs nursing home. METHODS: 41,973 long-term care residents aged ≥65 years were matched with tract-level Indices of Concentration at the Extremes across four socioeconomic domains. We modeled high blood pressure against these indices controlling for in

Japanese older adults' loneliness, family relationships and mortality: Does one's living arrangement make a difference?

AIM: This study examines how the association between older adults' family relationships and all-cause mortality differs among different household contexts: living alone, living with only a spouse and living with adult children. METHODS: We carried out a discrete-time event history analysis on all-cause mortality with measures of family relationships for each group of older adults. The study analyzed person-wave data from the Nihon University Japanese Longitudinal Study of Aging, including 11 225 longitudinal episodes between consecutive waves and 555 deaths reported in total. RESULTS: The fa

Neighborhoods, Schools and Obesity: The Potential for Place-Based Approaches to Reduce Childhood Obesity.

A common policy approach to reducing childhood obesity aims to shape the environment in which children spend most of their time: neighborhoods and schools. This paper uses richly detailed data on the body mass index (BMI) of all New York City public school students in grades K-8 to assess the potential for place-based approaches to reduce child obesity. We document variation in the prevalence of obesity across NYC public schools and census tracts, and then estimate the extent to which this variation can be explained by differences in individual-level predictors (such as race and household inco
