Cardol triene inhibits dengue infectivity by targeting kl loops and preventing envelope fusion.

Dengue virus causes a global burden that specific chemotherapy has not been established. A previous report suggested that anacardic acid inhibited hepatitis C virus infection. Here, we explored structure activity relationship of anacardic acid, cardanol, and cardol homologues with anti-DENV cellular infectivities. Cardol triene showed the highest therapeutic index at 29.07 with the CC50 and EC50 of 207.30 ± 5.24 and 7.13 ± 0.72 µM, respectively. Moreover, we observed that the more unsaturated the hydrocarbon tail, the higher the CC50s in all head groups. High CC50s were also found in HepG-2, T

[Chronotropic properties of adaptogenic drugs].

Adaptogenic agents of hormonal (melatonin) and plant origin (ginseng and bilobil) produce optimizing effect on circadian rhythm of locomotion and on the temporal dynamics of forced swimming in intact and false-operated rats. Melatonin exhibits the most expressed impact on behavior of animals. After the removal of the pineal gland, these effects of investigated drugs were significantly decreased. It is suggested that the pineal gland may take part in the chronotropic activity of adaptogenic drugs.

DNA repair of hydrogen peroxide-induced damage in human lymphocytes in the presence of four antimutagens. A study with alkaline single cell gel electrophoresis (comet assay).

We assessed four antimutagenic compounds' influences on DNA repair in human lymphocytes exposed in vitro to hydrogen peroxide (20 microM, 5 min, at 4 degrees C). DNA damage and repair were estimated by means of alkaline single cell gel electrophoresis (comet assay). It was noticed that the enhancement of DNA repair was relatively strongest when fluphenazine was present in the cell culture medium. In the cases of anthocyanins and alkylresorcinols, the effects were almost 6-9 times weaker than that of FPh. The effect of todralazine on DNA repair was relatively weakest. Further study should be do…

Long-term efficacy and safety of Jessner's solution and 35% trichloroacetic acid vs 5% fluorouracil in the treatment of widespread facial actinic keratoses.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined the long-term efficacy of fluorouracil (FU) or chemical peels for the treatment of actinic keratoses (AK). Our earlier work examined the efficacy and safety of a medium-depth chemical peel compared with the standard regimen of topical FU in the treatment of widespread facial AK through 12 months. OBJECTIVES: To determine long-term efficacy of both treatments by extending our observations through 32 months. METHODS: Fifteen patients with severe facial actinic damage were treated on the left side with a single application of Jessner's solution and 35% tric

Medium-depth chemical peeling.

Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) alone or in combination with other agents is the mainstay of medium-depth chemical peels. Indications for medium-depth chemical peels include both medical conditions, such as diffuse photodamage with contiguous actinic keratoses, and cosmetic conditions, such as the aging face and solar lentiginosis. Medium-depth chemical peeling with TCA is relatively simple and is associated with a favorable risk/benefit ratio. However, proper patient selection, with attention to both medical and psychological factors, requires significant experience. The histological basis of the

Novel Hsp90 inhibitors as leads for the development of radiotheragnostics for Meitner-Auger electron therapy.

Radiotheragnostics is a promising but still developing approach for cancer diagnosis and treatment, limited by the availability of high-affinity, targetable proteins. One such target is the 90 kDa heat shock protein (Hsp90), a chaperone essential for protein folding and stabilization. Cancer cells rely heavily on Hsp90, and its inhibitors show tumor-selective retention. Onalespib (AT13387), a potent Hsp90 inhibitor in phase III clinical trials, was used as a reference for the design of new compounds harbouring atoms with potential for radiotheragnostics. We synthesized 10 Onalespib analogues,

Zebrafish neuromast development: a target for endocrine disrupting chemicals?

In response to increasing evidence of human and environmental health impacts of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), screening and testing programs for EDC assessment are being developed, requiring characterization of potential adverse health effects. The development of the lateral line (LL), a neurosensory system in fish, has been suggested as a potential toxicological target of EDCs. The LL contains neuromasts with hair cells (HCs) which convert mechanical stimuli into neural signals. An exploratory study was performed to assess whether neuromast development is affected by a selection of m

In vitro thyroperoxidase inhibition assessment by LC-ICP-MS-based L-tyrosine iodination assay: comparison with Amplex Ultrared assay and its modifications.

Disruption of the thyroid hormone (TH) system by environmental chemicals poses significant risks to human and wildlife health. Reliable in vitro assays are essential for assessing thyroid peroxidase (TPO) inhibition, which disrupts a key step in thyroid hormone (TH) synthesis, while adhering to 3R principles. This study aimed to compare the sensitivity and specificity of two types of in vitro assays, tyrosine iodination (Tyr-I) detected by HPLC-ICP-MS and Amplex UltraRed (AUR) and its modifications, using human HEK-TPOA7 cells and rat thyroid microsomes. It involved the evaluation of TPO inhib

PINGing Sunshine: A Review of the Evidence for Adding Non-Filtering Photoprotective Ingredients to Sunscreens.

BACKGROUND: Photoprotective INGredients (PINGs) are non-filtering agents that enhance the skin's intrinsic defenses against solar radiation. Acting through antioxidant, DNA repair, immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and pigmentation-regulating mechanisms, PINGs may prevent or repair photodamage. When incorporated into sunscreens, they offer protection beyond ultraviolet (UV) filters. This strategy of biological photoprotection could address key limitations of traditional sunscreens and reduce dependence on high UV filter concentrations. METHODS: We conducted a focused literature review base

Physicochemical properties and cosmetic benefits of polysaccharide fractions from Zizania latifolia precipitated by different ethanol concentrations.

Four polysaccharide fractions (designated as ZLPF-60, ZLPF-70, ZLPF-80, and ZLPF-90), extracted from the swollen culms of Zizania latifolia, were obtained by precipitation with varying ethanol concentrations (60, 70, 80, and 90 %, v/v). Their physicochemical properties and in vitro cosmetic benefits, including antioxidant activity, moisture absorption capacity, moisturizing efficacy, and whitening effect, were investigated. The results demonstrated that, with increasing ethanol concentration, the combined content of uronic acids and sulfates, zeta potential, and average molecular weight (Mw) d

Develop Reusable Carbon Sub-Micrometer Composites with Record-High Cd(II) Removal Capacity.

Cd(II)-induced pollution across diverse water bodies severely threatens ecosystems and human health. Nevertheless, achieving ultra-efficient and cost-effective treatment of trace amounts of heavy metals remains a major challenge. Herein, the novel carbon sub-micrometer composites (CSMCs) supported Fe0@γ-Fe2O3 core-shell clusters nanostructures are designed and synthesized through a series of universally applicable methods. Research data on adsorption behavior clearly revealed that resorcinol/formaldehyde 1.25-basic ferric acetate (RF-1.25BFA) and RF-1.25BFA-540 have surprising adsorption capac

Folk medicine is widely used in Angola, even for human African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness) in spite of the fact that the reference treatment is available for free. Aiming to validate herbal remedies in use, we selected nine medicinal plants and assessed their antitrypanosomal activity. A total of 122 extracts were prepared using different plant parts and solvents. A total of 15 extracts from seven different plants exhibited in vitro activity (>70% at 20 µg/mL) against Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense bloodstream forms. The dichloromethane extract of Nymphaea lotus (leaves and leaflets) a

Tailored Porous Carbon Xerogels for Fe-N-C Catalysts in Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells.

Atomically dispersed Fe-N-C catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) have been synthesized with a template-free method using carbon xerogels (CXG) as a porous matrix. The porosity of the CXGs is easily tunable through slight variations in the synthesis procedure. In this work, CXGs are prepared by formaldehyde and resorcinol polymerization, modifying the pH during the process. Materials with a broad range of porous structures are obtained: from non-porous to micro-/meso-/macroporous materials. The porous properties of CXG have a direct effect on Fe-N-CXG activity against ORR in an aci

CO2 Etching Modulates Lithium and Sodium Storage Performance of Hard-Soft Carbon Composite-Based Freestanding Thick Electrodes.

Carbon-based materials are the most prospective anodes. Typically, a single carbon-based material is applied to different energy storage systems (EESs) without modification. However, the microcrystal structure of carbon plays a decisive role in the energy storage performance, and therefore, it should be adjusted when applied to different EESs. Here, a hierarchical porous carbon monomer monolith (HPCM) embedded with carbon nanotubes blooming on ZIF-67 was designed as a soft-hard carbon-based freestanding thick electrode for achieving high-energy lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries. HPCM is res

Effect of Vulcanization Process Parameters on the Tensile Strength of Carcass of Textile-Rubber Reinforced Conveyor Belts.

Textile-reinforced conveyor belts are most widely used in various industries, including in the mining, construction, and manufacturing industries, to transport materials from one place to another. The conveyor belt's tensile strength, which primarily relies on the property of the carcass, determines the area of application of the belt. The main aim of the current work was to investigate the influence of vulcanization temperature and duration of the vulcanization process on the tensile properties of the carcass part of the conveyor belt. An extensive experiment was carried out on the tensile pr

ClO2 pre-oxidation changes the yields and formation pathways of chloroform and chloral hydrate from phenolic precursors during chlorination.

Phenolic moieties in natural organic matter (NOM) are important precursors of disinfection by-products (DBPs). In this study, the formation of chloral hydrate from chlorination of seventeen phenolic compounds, including mono-, di- and tri-hydroxybenzenes, were evaluated and the role of chlorine dioxide (ClO2) pre-oxidation on its formation pathways was explored. Chloroform, was also evaluated for comparison. Chlorination of resorcinol exhibited the highest chloral hydrate yield (2.83 ± 0.13%) followed by chlorination of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (0.61 ± 0.03%). The median of chloral hydrate yields
