NIOSH approves organic vapor respirator cartridges based upon testing against 1000 parts per million carbon tetrachloride vapors. Data for other organic vapors are necessary for proper use of organic vapor cartridge respirators against those vapors. This paper describes a system designed to test respirator cartridges and canisters and results of cartridge tests against benzene and acrylonitrile at a variety of concentrations.

In surveying the environment of workers in a mattress factory thermophilic actinomycetes as well as phycomycetes and aspergillus species were isolated readily from work room dust, finished bat, sissal and the interior of baled linters. Those persons working with cotton products were shown to have a heavy, daily exposure to organisms known to be implicated in the pathogenesis of hypersensitivity pneumonitis. The effects, on respiration, of the acute administration of sodium bicarbonate were studied in 10 normal subjects. Carbon dioxide responses curves and tidal volume v. PCO2 relationships were obtained under hyperoxic conditions using a closed-circuit breathing system. During alkalosis, a decrease in the slope, and a displacement of the response curves to the right, were observed. The influence of sodium nitroprusside (SNP) on mitochondrial respiration was examined in rat liver mitochondria. The addition of SNP 1 mmol litre-1 during state 3 respiration inhibited the oxygen uptake by 63.4%. A mixture of SNP 1 mmol litre-1 and glutathione (GSH) 1 mmol litre-1 inhibited the oxygen uptake more markedly (by 75.9%). The results are reported of domiciliary cuirass respirator treatment, using tailor-made shells, in four patients with severe thoracic scoliosis. Three of the patients had suffered from poliomyelitis. A patient with Shy-Drager syndrome exhibited a partial defect in antidiuretic hormone (ADH) release, and cluster breathing, an indication of pontomedullary respiratory center damage, with a normal CO2 response curve. This extends the spectrum of abnormalities associated with the degenerative disease of the central nervous system. The presence of a pontomedullary respiratory pattern without an impaired CO2 response curve suggests that neurons that determine respiratory rhythm function independently from those that function as chemoreceptors.

Communicating hydrocephalus occurs as a result of inappropriate CSF production in the circumstance of diminished absorption. Ventricular enlargement does not progress as rapidly as the measured normal production of CSF would suggest.
