The neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) of extrapyramidal signs and hyperthermia is an uncommon complication of therapy with the major tranquilizers. Other manifestations are pallor, diaphoresis, blood pressure fluctuation, tachycardia, and tachypneic hypoventilation, which may necessitate respirator support. Death often occurs, but full recovery can result with prompt recognition and proper management. In a patient with Parkinson disease and a chronic psychiatric disorder treated with haloperidol, typical features of NMS appeared upon cessation of dopaminergic antiparkinsonian drugs. Manifes

The pediatric pneumogram is a frequently used tool in the diagnosis and management of apnea during infancy. We analyzed 287 pneumographic recordings from 123 full-term infants (63 males) obtained during the first 12 months of life to establish normative values for apnea, periodic breathing, and bradycardia. The results of the analysis were compared by sex and age. The number of infants who exhibited periodic breathing decreased significantly over time (78% at 0-2 weeks vs 29% at 39-52 weeks; P less than 0.05). However, for those infants who did breathe periodically, the percent of sleep time s

Anxiety disorders are common both in adults and children. While there have been major advances in understanding the neurobiology of anxiety disorders in adults, progress has been more limited in the elucidation of the mechanisms underlying these disorders in childhood. There is a need to delineate childhood biological models, since anxiety represents a significant clinical problem in children and is a risk factor for the subsequent development of anxiety and depression in adulthood. We conducted a review of the literature regarding pharmacological challenge tests and direct hypothalamic-pituit

Copper is an essential trace element for the human body since it is a cofactor of several enzymes and proteins and plays a pivotal role in several biological functions (e.g., respiration, protection from oxidative damage, iron metabolism, etc.), also including the central nervous system development and functioning (e.g., synthesis of neurotransmitters, myelination, activation of neuropeptides, etc.). Therefore, copper dysmetabolism is associated with different toxic effects, mainly represented by oxidative stress, and it has been reported in many neurodegenerative disorders, such as Wilson's d

We highlight the merit of fetal movement count to identify a fetus with neuromuscular disorder: nemaline myopathy. A 38-year-old 1-para woman not in a consanguineous marriage had decreased fetal movement. This, together with increased amniotic fluid volume, led us to perform detailed ultrasound examinations, which revealed stretch contracture of the knee joints, leading us to suspect fetal neuromuscular disorders. At 38(2/7), she gave birth vaginally to a 2444 g female infant. Her respiration was very weak, requiring respiratory support. Contractures of the upper/lower extremity joints and clu

Sleep apnea with neuromuscular disorders has been successfully treated with bi-level positive airway pressure ventilation (BiPAP), which, unlike continuous positive airway pressure ventilation (CPAP), creates pressure difference between expiratory and inspiratory phases. Hence if the respiration of patients stops longer than a pre-set duration, BiPAP can automatically force them to breath through a nasal mask. We report a 60-year-old woman with olivo-ponto-cerebellar atrophy (OPCA), whose mixed-type sleep apnea was difficult to treat with conventional CPAP. We therefore tried BiPAP on this pat

The aetiology of the hyperventilation syndrome is reviewed with special emphasis on psychological aspects. Early reports linking overbreathing and the emotions can be found as far back as the 16th century. During the last 50 years research has been carried out into respiration in psychiatric disorders but as far as the hyperventilation syndrome is concerned there have been few psychiatric studies. Though many people believe that hyperventilation occurs as a response to anxiety, it has recently been suggested that it is due to a bad breathing habit. Whichever view should prove to be correct, mo

The role of hyperventilation in the aetiology of panic attacks is still unclear. This paper briefly reviews the role of hyperventilation and abnormal respiration to panic attacks and examines the experimental evidence. Evidence has been found that physiological variables such as paCO2 and pH are involved in the aetiology of panic attacks and panic disorder but the extent and the nature of the involvement of cognitive variables is undetermined. Based on current evidence, there is a need to integrate cognitive variables with the physiological framework proposed by the hyperventilation theory. Un

Panic attacks during sleep are analysed in terms of a hyperventilation theory of panic disorder. The theory assumes that panic attacks during sleep are a manifestation of severe chronic hyperventilation, a dysfunctional state in which renal compensation has led to a relatively steady state of diminished bicarbonate. Reductions in respiration during deep non-REM sleep lead to respiratory acidosis which triggers hyperventilatory hypocapnea and subsequent panic. A probability model designed to predict when during sleep panic attacks are likely to occur is supported by relevant data from studies o

BACKGROUND: Although advances in cardiopulmonary resuscitation have improved survival from cardiac arrest (CA), neurologic injury persists and impaired mitochondrial bioenergetics may be critical for targeted neuroresuscitation. The authors sought to determine if excellent cardiopulmonary resuscitation and postresuscitation care and good traditional survival rates result in persistently disordered cerebral mitochondrial bioenergetics in a porcine pediatric model of asphyxia-associated ventricular fibrillation CA.
METHODS AND RESULTS: After 7 minutes of asphyxia, followed by ventricular fibril

BACKGROUND: A nascent explanatory theory regarding the pathophysiology of major depressive disorder posits that alterations in metabolic networks (e.g., insulin and glucocorticoid signaling) mediate allostasis.
METHOD: We conducted a PubMed search of all English-language articles published between January 1966 and September 2006. The search terms were: neurobiology, cognition, neuroprotection, inflammation, oxidative stress, glucocorticoids, metabolic syndrome, diabetes mellitus, insulin, and antidiabetic agents, cross-referenced with the individual names of DSM-III-R/IV/-TR-defined mood diso

Coughing behavior is associated with conditions such as sleep apnea, asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder and can severely affect quality of life in those affected. In this context, coughing quantification is often important, but routinely performed via questionnaires. This approach is dependent on patient compliance or recall, which may affect validity and be especially difficult for nocturnal coughs. Manual review of audio recordings is potentially more accurate, but raises privacy concerns due to the collection and review of sensitive audio-data by a human annotator. Today, ma

INTRODUCTION: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and obesity are metabolic disorders whose major hallmark is insulin resistance. Impaired mitochondrial activity, such as reduced ratio of energy production to respiration, has been implicated in the development of insulin resistance. Uncoupling proteins (UCPs) are proton carriers, expressed in the mitochondrial inner membrane, that uncouple oxygen consumption by the respiratory chain from ATP synthesis.
AIM: The aim of the study was to determine transcriptional levels of UCP1 and UCP2 in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from patients wit

INTRODUCTION: Dysfunctional breathing (DB) is a complex condition that affects health and quality of life. It can occur alone or with other conditions and presents with various symptoms. Despite its prevalence, there is no consensus among healthcare professionals on its definition, diagnosis, or classification.
AIMS & METHODS: This scoping review aimed to explore how dysfunctional breathing is characterised across the literature. To achieve this, a comprehensive search strategy was employed, covering both peer-reviewed and grey literature from relevant academic databases and websites.

Protein glycosylation is a widespread posttranslational modification that can impact the function of proteins. Dysregulated protein glycosylation has been linked to several diseases, including chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs). CRDs pose a significant public health threat globally, affecting the airways and other lung structures. Emerging researches suggest that glycosylation plays a significant role in regulating inflammation associated with CRDs. This review offers an overview of the abnormal glycoenzyme activity and corresponding glycosylation changes involved in various CRDs, including c
