BACKGROUND: Primary tumours of the gastrointestinal tract are very uncommon in children. They can present with anaemia caused by gastrointestinal acute or chronic bleeding. One of the most common gastrointestinal tumours is Burkitt lymphoma. To define the hematologic changes during a mild viral infection, 93 infants were immunized with live attenuated measles virus and studied prospectively at 0, 4, 9, 14, 21, and 30 days. Hemoglobin concentration decreased significantly by days 9 and 14. The decrease was greater than 1.0 g/dL in 8.6% and greater than 0.6 in 24.3% of the infants. Of the nonanemic infants, 22% became anemic. Serum iron and percentage saturation of transferrin decreased, whereas serum ferritin increased significantly. BACKGROUND: Administering darbepoetin (Darbe) to preterm infants stimulates erythropoiesis, increases red blood cell (RBC) mass, and reduces RBC transfusions. We typically administer 10 µg/kg weekly until 34 weeks corrected gestation; however, we are uncertain whether this dose could be given every other week (biweekly) with equal efficacy.
METHODS: Infants ≤32 weeks were randomized to receive Darbe 10 µg/kg/dose weekly or biweekly for six weeks, tracking complete blood counts, absolute reticulocyte counts (ARC), iron status (RET-He), and RBC transfusions.

We evaluated the iron status of 50 Sicilian patients with G6PD deficiency under steady-state conditions and compared our results with those for 50 control patients. We studied haemolysis and iron indices to evaluate the iron balance. These patients could be considered to be at risk of iron overload as a result of increased bone marrow activity. Reticulocytosis and macrocytosis with reduced levels of haptoglobin were found in the G6PD-deficient subjects, both of which are evidence of a moderate haemolysis. Iron status within the normal range, without iron overload or iron deficiency, was found.

Six patients with acute renal failure, in five cases due to acute crescentic glomerulonephritis and in one case due to total bilateral renal cortical necrosis, were studied. All had serum erythropoietin (EPO) concentrations in the normal range, despite a relatively severe anaemia.
