Behçet's disease: activated T lymphocytes in retinal perivasculitis.

A 38-year-old man who died from systemic Behçet's disease had previously suffered from severe, recurrent bilateral retinal vasculitis, and anterior uveitis for 10 years. Immunopathological examination of the eyes postmortem revealed marked hyaline thickening of the retinal and optic nerve vessels. The vessels had an intramural and perivascular infiltrate of T lymphocytes which stained positively for CD4 and IL2 receptor surface markers. Small numbers of cells in the optic nerve head, retinal vascular endothelium, and retinal pigment epithelium were HLA DR positive.

[Retinal angiomatosis in association with Stargardt's disease. A case report].

We present what we believe to be the first reported association between retinal angiomatosis and Stardgardt's disease (Gass type 3). We have had the opportunity of following photographically a patient for the last eleven years. The earliest photos showed the macular problem whilst the latter shots showed the presence of a capillary angioma involving the temporal part of the optic disc and the adjacent retina of the left eye. We believe that this tumour arose in previously normal tissue. Examination and investigation of the patient revealed a peripapillary choroidal rupture at the site of the a

Pigmentary retinal degeneration and Coats' disease: a case study.

We report a 22-year-old Hispanic man with familial congenital nystagmus, iris transillumination, and pigmentary retinal anomalies with subretinal fatty exudates similar to those seen in Coats' disease. Direct treatment of the telangiectatic vessels with cryotherapy caused a subretinal hemorrhage. We therefore recommend surrounding the area of abnormal vessels (posterior to vessels and between vessels and ora serrata) with cryotherapy to reverse the formation of the vascular anomalies.

Contrast sensitivity versus visual acuity in retinal disease.

A large group of individuals with retinal disease were tested prospectively for contrast sensitivity by means of Arden gratings. A subgroup of 19 were also tested with the Nicolet automated television system. Individuals with macular or peripheral dystrophy showed a general reduction in contrast sensitivity as visual acuity decreased. The loss of contrast sensitivity was more prominent for high spatial frequencies (6.4 cycles per degree) than for low ones (0.2 cycles per degree). Similar results were obtained for patients with achromatopsia and congenital stationary night blindness. Patients w

Digital subtraction angiography in the diagnosis of retinal vascular disease.

Digital subtraction angiography is a safe, inexpensive method of investigating systemic vascular disease in patients for whom conventional carotid angiography is too risky. We used this technique in five patients with a variety of retinal vascular conditions--a 55-year-old woman with occlusion of the right internal carotid artery, a 63-year-old man with bilateral occlusion of the internal carotid arteries, a 72-year-old man with occlusion of the stem of the left subclavian artery and an irregularity of the proximal portion of the innominate artery, a 77-year-old man with optic nerve head neova

Triple Trouble with Triple Solutions: A Unique Case Report of a Severe Exudative Retinal Detachment Accompanied by Retinal Traction and Two Retinal Holes in Coats Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Coats disease is a rare vasculature pathology that usually presents as retinal telangiectasia with possible progression to exudative retinal detachment (RD). Intravitreal anti-VEGF injections, cryotherapy, laser photocoagulation, and surgery are commonly used to control the disease and prevent its progression. Although iatrogenic tractional RDs secondary to anti-VEGF injections have been reported in patients with Coats disease, RDs in Coats disease are exudative, secondary to retinal exudation and vascular abnormalities. In this article, we present the first reported case of a se

Retinal Arterial Wall Reflectivity and Incident Cardiovascular Disease.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether retinal arterial wall reflectivity is associated with future cardiovascular disease (CVD) in a large community-based Japanese cohort. DESIGN: Community-based cohort study. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 6264 adults from the Nagahama Study (baseline 2012-2016) without a history of CVD. METHODS: Retinal arterial wall reflectivity was measured on peripapillary OCT images at baseline. Participants were followed for approximately 7 years, and incident CVD events, including stroke and coronary artery disease (CAD), were identified through medical records. Associations we

Inherited Retinal Disease as a Predisposing Factor for Paclitaxel Maculopathy.

Purpose: To describe 3 cases of angiographically silent cystoid macular edema (CME) associated with paclitaxel therapy in patients with clinical or genetic features suggestive of an underlying inherited retinal disease (IRD). Methods: A series of 3 patients was reviewed. Results: All 3 patients presented with decreased vision and bilateral, angiographically silent CME shortly after starting paclitaxel. Clinical findings in each case raised suspicion of a concurrent IRD. Genetic testing revealed a pathogenic mutation in the NR2E3 gene, consistent with enhanced S-cone syndrome in 1 patient, seve

Retinal sublayer changes in cases with Alzheimer's disease and depression.

PURPOSE: Alzheimer's disease (AD) and depression are two prevalent conditions in the elderly population, both of which may impact the structure or function of the visual pathway. This study simultaneously investigated the effects of AD and depression on optic nerve head and macular parameters using Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) imaging. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included two groups: 50 individuals with mild to moderate AD and 50 age-matched healthy controls (HCs). All participants underwent the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Com

Expression of Versican in the Retina and Its Implication in Retinal Disease.

Chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans are characterized by their sulfated glycosaminoglycan chains covalently attached to the core protein. Versican, encoded by the CSPG2 gene, is a chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan highly expressed in the human and mouse retina. Due to alternative splicing, it exists in four different isoforms: V0, V1, V2 and V3. Interactions with a variety of proteins lead to its main functions, such as influencing cellular adhesion, migration, proliferation and regulating inflammatory processes. Versican expression is high during retinal development and decreases in the mature t

Characterisation of SLC38A8 and Its Role in Retinal Pathways and Disease.

BACKGROUND: This study investigates the role of the SLC38A8 gene. SLC38A8 facilitates glutamine influx, which converts to glutamate in the visual pathway. Mutations in SLC38A8 are associated with FHONDA syndrome, a subtype of foveal hypoplasia with congenital nystagmus and optic-nerve-decussation defects without pigmentation leading to severe vision loss. METHODS: In vivo and in vitro methods were conducted using retinal cell lines overexpressing SLC38A8, and Slc38a8/Slc38a7 gene-edited mice to evaluate visual function and physiological changes. Statistical analyses included two-way ANOVA, mu

Retinal biomarkers for the risk of Alzheimer's disease and frontotemporal dementia.

PURPOSE: Differentiating between Alzheimer's disease (AD) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) can be challenging due to overlapping cognitive and behavioral manifestations. Evidence regarding non-invasive and early-stage biomarkers remains limited. Our aim was to identify retinal biomarkers for the risk of AD and FTD in populations without dementia and explore underlying brain structural mechanisms. METHODS: We included a total of 3,0573 UK Biobank participants without dementia, ocular disorders, and diabetes who underwent baseline retinal optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging. Cox proport
