Influence of Plate Design, Thickness, and Fixation Architecture on Mandibular Advancement Stability: A Finite Element Analysis.

Background: Mandibular advancement is a commonly performed surgical procedure for the treatment of mandibular retrognathia and Class II dentofacial deformities; however, large advancements impose increased mechanical demands on fixation systems. Despite the availability of various fixation strategies, standard straight plate systems remain widely used worldwide due to their availability, cost-effectiveness, and clinical familiarity. Continuous biomechanical evaluation of these systems is therefore required to optimize stability and performance under demanding conditions. Objectives: The aim of…

Use of a High-Flow Nasal Cannula in a Child With a Functional Single Ventricle and Difficult Airway.

Inducing anesthesia and securing the airway without disrupting the patient's hemodynamic state are challenging in pediatric patients with a functional single ventricle (FSV). Here, the authors report effective use of a high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) as a tool in providing oxygen supplementation for airway management in pediatric FSV patients with a history of a difficult airway. A female patient, aged 5 years 7 months, was admitted for extracardiac conduit Fontan procedure. The patient had a history of multiple failed attempts at endotracheal intubation and was diagnosed with retrognathia and …

Meier-Gorlin syndrome.

Meier-Gorlin syndrome (MGS) is a rare autosomal recessive primordial dwarfism disorder, characterized by microtia, patellar applasia/hypoplasia, and a proportionate short stature. Associated clinical features encompass feeding problems, congenital pulmonary emphysema, mammary hypoplasia in females and urogenital anomalies, such as cryptorchidism and hypoplastic labia minora and majora. Typical facial characteristics during childhood comprise a small mouth with full lips and micro-retrognathia. During ageing, a narrow, convex nose becomes more prominent. The diagnosis MGS should be considered i…

Treatment of a Class II subdivision malocclusion with multiple congenitally missing teeth.

This case report describes the treatment of a patient with a Class II Division 1 subdivision right malocclusion with 8 congenitally missing teeth, incompetent lips, and incisor protrusion. The treatment plan included extractions and space closure with retraction of the anterior teeth; symmetric mechanics were used in the mandibular arch and asymmetric mechanics in the maxillary arch. Because of the mechanics used, some midline deviations were expected. Knowledge of diagnosis and treatment planning of asymmetric malocclusions and dental esthetics are essential for success when correcting asymme
