Renal colic always involves pelvic hypertension and severe urodynamic disturbances which result in fornical reflux, urine leakage to renal interstitial tissues, to tissues of the renal sinus, and sometimes to the retroperitoneal space. If the urinary tract is infected, renal colic may lead to acute pyelonephritis and generalized infection, as well as to bacteriemic shock. Presentation of the sonographic findings of 170 retroperitoneal masses: primary and metastatic neoplasms, abdominal aortic aneurysms, hematomas and abszesses. A typical diagnostically reliable sonographic pattern was seen only in retroperitoneal hematomas in the area of the psoas and in aortic aneurysms, provided the aorta itself could be visualized. In all the other masses the ultrasound pattern did not provide reliable clues as to their histology; ultrasound, however, proved to be highly successful in demonstrating the presence and location of the lesion.

Lymphangioma, a benign neoplasm of the lymphatic system, is common in children but rare in adults. Its clinical manifestations include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and a palpable mass. A previously healthy 12-year-old boy presented with a mass in the right retroperitoneum adjacent to an ipsilateral hypoplastic kidney. Complete resection of the tumor and kidney were done. The tumor was found to be papillary adenocarcinoma lying 3 cm apart from a contracted kidney, which was free of tumor. No adjuvant therapy was given. After 50 months of follow-up the child is healthy without evidence of tumor recurrence.

We describe a 56-year-old white man who presented with gradual and progressive visual loss and subsequent hypertension and pedal edema. A computed tomographic scan of the orbits showed bilateral diffuse retrobulbar masses, and an abdominal computed tomographic scan showed a diffuse retroperitoneal mass invading the aorta, ureters, and inferior vena cava.
