Surgical Outcome of Giant Goiters: A Retrospective Observational Study.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical management of giant goiters is often challenging due to distorted anatomy and proximity to vital structures in the neck. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate the outcomes of patients operated on for giant goiters (size >10 cm) compared to non-giant ones (size ≤10 cm). METHODS: This retrospective study included 132 patients undergoing total thyroidectomy for various etiologies over 36 months (January 2022 to December 2024) in a single surgical unit of a tertiary care hospital. Clinical and surgical management details were noted from the electronic database and medical record

Impact of the environment changes on the occurrence of appendicitis: A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Appendicitis is one of the most frequent infectious abdominal diseases worldwide. Recent studies suggest that high temperatures increase the risk of appendicitis, while its incidence decreases in high-income countries. Temperature may not be the only environmental parameter associated with appendicitis. The objective was to assess the impact of meteorological parameters on the occurrence of appendicitis in France between 2013 and 2022. METHODS: This is a retrospective observational study was based on data from the French national hospital discharge database and publicly available

Perioperative hyperglycemia and postoperative outcomes: a retrospective cohort study.

PURPOSE: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is increasing in prevalence. Perioperative hyperglycemia is associated with an increased risk of adverse postoperative outcomes. We aimed to determine the prevalence of DM as well as the incidence of patients having a current hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) and compare postoperative outcomes between patients with and without hyperglycemia. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of adult patients undergoing noncardiac surgery at the University of Alberta Hospital (Edmonton, AB, Canada) between November 2019 and December 2023. We identified DM retrospectively

Transpalpebral exenteration in dogs: A retrospective study (2003‒2023).

BACKGROUND: Transpalpebral exenteration is indicated in cases of neoplasia, infection or severe trauma involving the globe and orbit. Limited peer-reviewed literature exists on the indications, complications and outcomes associated with this procedure in dogs. METHODS: This retrospective study analysed medical records of 35 dogs undergoing transpalpebral exenteration at three UK veterinary referral centres between 2003 and 2023. The data included signalment, diagnostic findings, surgical details and postoperative complications. Kruskal‒Wallis and Fisher's exact tests were used to analyse rela

Antimicrobial use at the end of life: a retrospective cohort study.

Antibiotic resistance poses a global threat. Antibiotics are administered to 80-90% of terminally ill patients but evidence of their effectiveness in improving survival or symptom relief at the end of life (EOL) is scarce. To determine the proportion of deceased patients that continue antibiotic treatment after documented EOL discussion and the decision to prioritise symptom relief over active treatment. As secondary aims to compare the groups with and without antibiotics after EOL discussion in terms of differences in demographics, type of infection, mean survival time after EOL discussion an

Pregnancy and risk of melanoma: a matched retrospective cohort study.

Pregnancy-associated melanoma has long been debated, with hypotheses that gestational immune tolerance and elevated sex hormones may promote melanocytic transformation; however, large-scale, real-world evidence remains limited and conflicting. Using the TriNetX Global Collaborative Network, we conducted a retrospective cohort study of pregnant patients with documented first and third trimester encounters versus reproductive-age nonpregnant females with an encounter for contraceptive management and equivalent follow-up. Cohorts were 1:1 propensity-score matched on demographics, comorbidities re

Stereotactic radiosurgery for pediatric craniopharyngiomas: a multicenter retrospective study.

PURPOSE: The role of stereotactic radiosurgery in the management of pediatric craniopharyngiomas remains incompletely defined, particularly with respect to long-term disease control and late treatment-related morbidity. This multicenter study evaluates long-term tumor control and functional outcomes following Gamma Knife radiosurgery (GKRS) in pediatric patients with craniopharyngiomas. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 33 pediatric patients (< 18 years) treated with GKRS for residual or recurrent craniopharyngiomas at two independent and experienced neurosurgery centers. Drug-Induced Sialolithiasis-A Big-Data Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Sialolithiasis pathophysiology is multifactorial, with systemic medications often hypothesised as a key contributor, particularly in older adults (Drug-Induced Sialolithiasis). However, robust evidence supporting this theory is limited. This study aimed to investigate the association between common medication classes and sialolithiasis in an older Israeli cohort. METHODS: A nationwide retrospective case-control study (2005-2024) was conducted using the Clalit Health Services database. Sialolithiasis cases were matched 1:3 with controls based on age and gender. After stratification

Absent nocturnal cortisol decline in Pheochromocytoma: A retrospective study.

Pheochromocytoma is a catecholamine-producing tumor that may exhibit atypical hormonal profiles. Emerging evidence suggests an association with cortisol dysregulation in the absence of overt Cushing syndrome; however, systematic cortisol evaluation is not routinely performed. This study investigated the prevalence and clinical characteristics of absent nocturnal cortisol decline in pheochromocytoma. This retrospective study included 53 patients with histologically confirmed pheochromocytoma treated between 2011 and 2024. All eligible patients diagnosed during the study period were included. Am

Prevalence of orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst: A retrospective clinicopathological study.

Orthokeratinized odontogenic cyst is a distinct developmental jaw cyst commonly misinterpreted at the clinical and radiographic level due to overlap with other keratinizing and tooth-associated cysts. Hence, 1,200 biopsy specimens were analyzed, identifying 30 histologically confirmed OOC cases. OOC constituted 10.0% of all odontogenic cysts and 2.5% of the total biopsy cohort. The majority of lesions affected males between 21-30 years and were predominantly located in the posterior mandible, frequently involving impacted teeth, especially the mandibular third molar. The study highlights its r

Splenic Lesions in Dogs: A Retrospective Epidemiological and Pathological Study.

Splenic neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions are frequently diagnosed in dogs and often exhibit overlapping clinical signs and gross morphological features, rendering histopathological examination essential for definitive diagnosis, therapeutic planning, and prognostic assessment. In Colombia, epidemiological data regarding these lesions remain limited, whereas international studies report considerable heterogeneity in the relative frequencies of neoplastic and non-neoplastic conditions. This study aimed to characterize the histopathological spectrum of splenic lesions in dogs and provide upd

Histomorphological Changes in Breast Lesions: A Retrospective Observational Study.

Background Breast lesions can occur in individuals of all age groups and may include a range of conditions, from benign abnormalities to malignant tumors. Among these, breast cancer is one of the most frequently diagnosed cancers worldwide. Methods used to diagnose breast lesions include histopathology studies and flow cytometry DNA analysis. Some lesions, like cellular fibroadenoma and benign phyllodes tumors, are difficult to differentiate from each other. As their treatment modalities differ from each other, it is important to manage the condition with care. This study emphasizes the import
