Health beliefs of school-age rural children in podoconiosis-affected families: A qualitative study in Southern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have suggested investigation of health beliefs in children to be an important pre-condition for primary prevention of disease. However, little effort has been made to understand these in the context of podoconiosis. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A cross sectional qualitative study was conducted in March 2016 in Wolaita Zone, Southern Ethiopia. Data were collected through in-depth individual interviews (IDIs) and focus group discussions (FGDs),

Antiretroviral therapy initiation and adherence in rural South Africa: community health workers' perspectives on barriers and facilitators.

South Africa has the largest global HIV/AIDS epidemic, but barriers along the HIV care continuum prevent patients from initiating and adhering to antiretroviral therapy (ART). To qualitatively explore reasons for poor ART initiation and adherence rates from the unique perspective of community health workers (CHWs), we conducted focus groups during May-August 2014 with 21 CHWs in rural Msinga, KwaZulu-Natal. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, and translated from Zulu into English. Hybrid deductive and inductive analytical methods were applied to identify emergent themes. Multiple psyc

An exploratory study of mental health and HIV risk behavior among drug-using rural women in jail.

OBJECTIVE: Rural women, particularly those in the criminal justice system, are at risk for HIV related to the increasing prevalence of injection drug use as well as limited services. Research on HIV risk correlates, including drug use and mental health, has primarily focused on urban women incarcerated in prisons. The purpose of this exploratory study is to examine dual HIV risk by 3 different mental health problems (depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder [PTSD]) among drug-using women in rural jails. METHOD: This study involved random selection, screening, and face-to-face in

Challenging logics of complex intervention trials: community perspectives of a health care improvement intervention in rural Uganda.

Health systems in many African countries are failing to provide populations with access to good quality health care. Morbidity and mortality from curable diseases such as malaria remain high. The PRIME trial in Tororo, rural Uganda, designed and tested an intervention to improve care at health centres, with the aim of reducing ill-health due to malaria in surrounding communities. This paper presents the impact and context of this trial from the perspective of community members in the study area. Fieldwork was carried out for a year from the start of the intervention in June 2011, and involved

Changes in food insecurity, nutritional status, and physical health status after antiretroviral therapy initiation in rural Uganda.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether time on antiretroviral therapy (ART) is associated with improvements in food security and nutritional status, and the extent to which associations are mediated by improved physical health status. DESIGN: The Uganda AIDS Rural Treatment Outcomes study, a prospective cohort of HIV-infected adults newly initiating ART in Mbarara, Uganda. METHODS: Participants initiating ART underwent quarterly structured interview and blood draws. The primary explanatory variable was time on ART, constructed as a set of binary variables for each 3-month period. Outcomes were fo

Spatial variation in ambient air toxics concentrations and health risks between industrial-influenced, urban, and rural sites.

Concentrations of 38 gas-phase organic air toxics were measured over a 2-yr period at four different sites in and around Pittsburgh, PA, to investigate spatial variations in health risks from chronic exposure. The sites were chosen to represent different exposure regimes: a downtown site with substantial mobile source emissions; two residential sites adjacent to one of the most heavily industrialized zones in Pittsburgh; and a regional background site. Lifetime cancer risks and non-cancer hazard quotients were estimated using a traditional and interactive risk models. Although study average co

Brief reports: Unequal treatment: mental health care for sexual and gender minority groups in a rural state.

OBJECTIVE: This qualitative study examined the social dynamics of communities and clinic settings that impede the delivery of culturally relevant services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people living in rural areas. METHODS: Ethnographic interviews were conducted with 20 providers in rural areas to document their perceptions of LGBT mental health care. RESULTS: A majority of rural providers claimed that there is no difference between working with LGBT clients and non-LGBT clients. This neutral therapeutic posture may be insufficient when working with rural LGBT clients. De

Evaluation of a geriatric mental health training program for nursing personnel in rural long-term care facilities.

Although mental illness among elderly living in nursing homes is a substantial and growing concern, the behavioral problems associated with mental illness or threats to mental health are not well understood, tolerated, or effectively managed by nursing home staff. As a result, resident care and quality of life, and staff morale often suffer. The need for geriatric mental health training in long-term care settings has become increasingly apparent. Psychiatric/mental health nurses are in an advantageous position to address this current need and future challenge through the development, implement

Latent profiles of social networks and their association with digital health readiness among rural older adults with hypertension.

Person-centered approaches to social networks profiles and their association with digital health readiness (DHR) remain underexplored among rural older adults with hypertension. This study aimed to identify latent social networks profiles and examine their independent association with DHR in this population. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 576 rural older adults with hypertension by using the Lubben Social Network Scale-6 and the Digital Health Readiness Questionnaire (DHRQ) in Hunan Province, China. Latent profile analysis identified social networks profiles. Multivariable linear

"I was Where I Needed to be": The Rural Health Care Workforce Experience During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

More information is needed on how to recruit and retain rural health professionals, especially during times of crisis. In this article, we explore the experiences of rural health professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted in-depth, semi-structured interviews with physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and allied health professionals in the state of Minnesota from 2023 to 2024 (n = 17) and used iterative thematic analysis to identify key themes. Two key themes emerged from our analysis as challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic: staffing shortages and the politicization …

Effect of health education on foot care knowledge and practice of patients with type 2 diabetes in rural Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot complications represent one of the most severe consequences of diabetes mellitus, with substantial global prevalence of diabetic foot ulcers. In Bangladesh, a significant proportion of type 2 diabetes patients are at risk of diabetic foot ulcers, yet patients’ foot care knowledge and practice remain largely unsatisfactory. This study aimed to explore the effectiveness of a foot care education session among rural diabetic patients in Bangladesh. METHODS: A single-group pre-post study design was employed to develop and apply a footcare education module among 51 patients

The causal relationship between family economic, cultural, and social capital and child health in urban and rural China.

BACKGROUND: This study investigates the causal impact of family capital on the health of children and adolescents in China, focusing on the urban-rural divide. Despite research on factors like family income and parent-child relationships, causal relationships and urban-rural disparity remain underexplored. METHODS: The study incorporates factors like “family tradition” and “intergenerational care,” using longitudinal data from the China Family Panel Studies (2010–2020). Fixed effects models, lagged regression, and instrumental variable techniques explore family capital’s impact on self-rated h
