Effect of High-Pressure Processing on Storage Quality, Bioactive Compounds, and Flavor Profile of Selenium-Sand Melon Juice.

This study systematically evaluated the effects of high-pressure processing (HPP, 500 MPa, 10 min) on the comprehensive quality of selenium-sand melon juice (SSJ) over a 35-day refrigerated storage period (4 °C). To simulate extreme contamination scenarios, samples were inoculated with Escherichia coli (6.886 log10 CFU/mL) and Aspergillus sclerotioniger (5.011 log10 spores/mL). Five treatment groups were established, including HPP-treated (inoculated and uninoculated) and low-temperature long-time (LTLT, 65 °C for 30 min) pasteurized (inoculated and uninoculated) groups. HPP treatment complete…

First report of anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibodies in the sand-dune tuco-tuco (Ctenomys flamarioni) from southern Brazil.

The subterranean rodent Ctenomys flamarioni is an endemic species threatened by the proximity to anthropogenic environments, a factor that increases its contact with domestic animals. The protozoan Toxoplasma gondii is of particular concern because its definitive hosts include domestic and wild felids, while several species of wild mammals act as intermediate hosts. The present study aimed to evaluate the seroprevalence of T. gondii in two populations of C. flamarioni in coastal dune areas of southern Brazil with different degrees of anthropogenic disturbance. A total of 17 individuals were ca

Gallstone Classification Using Random Forest Optimized by Sand Cat Swarm Optimization Algorithm with SHAP and DiCE-Based Interpretability.

Gallstone disease affects approximately 10-20% of the global adult population, with early diagnosis being essential for effective treatment and management. While image-based machine learning (ML) models have shown high accuracy in gallstone detection, tabular data approaches remain less explored. In this study, we have proposed a Random Forest (RF) classifier optimized using the Sand Cat Swarm Optimization (SCSO) algorithm for gallstone prediction based on a tabular dataset. Our experiments have been conducted across four frameworks: only RF without cross-validation (CV), RF with CV, RF-SCSO w…

Sand and dust storms: a growing global health threat calls for international health studies to support policy action.

Sand and dust storms increasingly threaten global environmental and public health. To date, 150 countries are directly affected, with more than 100 classified as non-dust source regions. With climate change, these storms are expected to become more frequent and severe. Despite international awareness and initiatives, such as those led by the UN, crucial knowledge gaps continue to hinder effective, evidence-based public responses to sand and dust storms. In this Viewpoint, we review existing gaps in health research and highlight four key research priorities: the comprehensive health effects of …

Venoarterial Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation-Assisted Whole-Lung Lavage for Near Drowning With Massive Sand Aspiration: A Case Report.

Sand aspiration during drowning can cause tracheobronchial obstruction and severe respiratory failure. In life-threatening hypoxemia, there is currently no established method for the safe removal of aspirated sand. We report a case of a 50-year-old man with hypertension and angina pectoris who nearly drowned while surfing. Upon arrival at the hospital, he was unconscious, hypoxemic, and hypothermic. Chest computed tomography revealed extensive bilateral dorsal infiltrates and high-density material within the bronchi. Despite repeated suctioning of the foul-smelling sand, the partial pressure o…

Molecular detection of Leishmania and blood meal analysis in sand flies from Corumbá, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil.

In this study, we investigated the presence of Leishmania in sand flies collected from a peridomestic area in Corumbá, Mato Grosso do Sul, after an autochthonous case of cutaneous leishmaniasis was confirmed. A total of 1,542 sand flies belonging to seven species were collected, with Lu. cruzi being the most prevalent (94.3%). We detected the presence of DNA from Le. infantum (7 pools) and Le. braziliensis (3 pools) by sequencing the ITS1 amplicon in ten pools, all of which were composed of engorged (3) and non-engorged (7) females of Lu. cruzi. We collected 24 engorged females, with Homo sapi…

Comparative reductions of norovirus, echovirus, adenovirus, Campylobacter jejuni and process indicator organisms during water filtration in alluvial sand.

Sand filtration is a cost-effective means of reducing microbial pathogens in drinking-water treatment. Our understanding of pathogen removal by sand filtration relies largely on studies of process microbial indicators, and comparative data from pathogens are sparse. In this study, we examined the reductions of norovirus, echovirus, adenovirus, bacteriophage MS2 and PRD1, Campylobacter jejuni, and Escherichia coli during water filtration through alluvial sand. Duplicate experiments were conducted using 2 sand columns (50 cm long, 10 cm diameter) and municipal tap water sourced from chlorine-fre…

Population dynamics of phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) in cutaneous leishmaniasis endemic areas of Kurunegala District, Sri Lanka.

Sand flies are the primary vectors of leishmaniasis. Disease management with effective vector control depends on the knowledge of vector population dynamics. In Sri Lanka, despite few isolated entomological collections, long-term studies are not reported to date. In the reported study, monthly entomological surveillance was conducted from May 2017 to December 2018 in Polpithigama, Maho, and Galgamuwa Medical Officer of Health (MOH) areas using standard entomological techniques. Climatic data were collected from the Department of Meteorology, Sri Lanka. Patient records were collected from each …

A chronic moderate methionine administration induced hyperhomocysteinemia associated with cardiovascular disease phenotype in the sand rat Psammomys obesus.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular diseases were defined as coronary artery, cerebrovascular, or peripheral arterial disease. Hyperhomocysteinemia (Hhcy) is an independent risk factor of cardiovascular diseases, including atherosclerosis. Our previous studies demonstrated the involvement of Hhcy in cardiovascular remodeling in the sand rat Psammomys obesus. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An experimental Hhcy was induced, in the sand rat Psammomys obesus, by a daily intraperitoneal injection of 70 mg/kg of methionine for a total duration of 6 months. The impact of Hhcy on the cellular and matrix structures o…

Detection of Leishmania DNA in Sand Flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) From a Cutaneous Leishmaniasis Outbreak Area in Northeastern Brazil.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) by Leishmania braziliensis Vianna (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae) is a widespread disease in the western hemisphere and Brazil is the country reporting the majority of the human cases each year. Several phlebotomine sand flies have been regarded as putative or proven vectors of L. braziliensis and multiple vectors may be involved in the transmission of this parasite in the same endemic foci. In this study, we tested a subset of female phlebotomine sand flies collected in the frame of a previous study conducted in a military training camp, where outbreaks of CL b…

An Atypical Case of Autochthonous Cutaneous Leishmaniasis Associated with Naturally Infected Phlebotomine Sand Flies in Texas, United States.

In the United States, phlebotomine sand flies carrying Leishmania (Leishmania) mexicana are endemic along the southern border. However, relatively little is known about the enzootic and zoonotic transmission of L. (L.) mexicana within the United States, and autochthonous cases of the consequent disease are rarely reported. We investigated an atypical case of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) caused by L. (L.) mexicana in a patient from central Texas which did not respond to a typical antileishmanial chemotherapy. We also investigated sand fly vectors around the patient's residence. PCR followed by …

Natural Leishmania (Leishmania) mexicana infection and biting activity of anthropophilic sand fly Lutzomyia ayacuchensis in the Ecuadorian Andes.

To elucidate the transmission mode of Andean cutaneous leishmaniasis (Andean-CL), natural Leishmania infection and biting activity of sand flies were tested in a selected sylvatic focus of the endemic area of the Ecuadorian Andes. Monthly sand fly collections and dissections were conducted during 12 months from July 2018 to June 2019. The Leishmania positive specimens/slides with innumerable amounts of actively mobile flagellates made us easy to detect positive sand flies. The promastigotes observed located in the anterior and posterior midgut, without the hindgut localization. The parasite is…

Evaluation of moving bed sand filter for denitrification, suspended solids removal and very low effluent total phosphorus concentrations.

Continuously flushing moving bed sand filter was operated in pilot scale for phosphorus (P) and nitrogen removal with simultaneous particle removal. The wastewater tested was either final effluent from a municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) with nitrogen removal in moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBRs) followed by coagulation and dissolved air flotation (DAF) for P and suspended solids (SS) removal, or different mixtures of this final effluent and effluent from the MBBR-stage. The study focused on the applicability to achieve low total phosphorus (TP) concentrations (below 0.1 mg/L) and s…

Gut Microbes Egested during Bites of Infected Sand Flies Augment Severity of Leishmaniasis via Inflammasome-Derived IL-1β.

Leishmania donovani parasites are the cause of visceral leishmaniasis and are transmitted by bites from phlebotomine sand flies. A prominent feature of vector-transmitted Leishmania is the persistence of neutrophils at bite sites, where they protect captured parasites, leading to enhanced disease. Here, we demonstrate that gut microbes from the sand fly are egested into host skin alongside Leishmania parasites. The egested microbes trigger the inflammasome, leading to a rapid production of interleukin-1β (IL-1β), which sustains neutrophil infiltration. Reducing midgut microbiota by pretreatmen…

Enhanced protective efficacy of nonpathogenic recombinant leishmania tarentolae expressing cysteine proteinases combined with a sand fly salivary antigen.

BACKGROUND: Novel vaccination approaches are needed to prevent leishmaniasis. Live attenuated vaccines are the gold standard for protection against intracellular pathogens such as Leishmania and there have been new developments in this field. The nonpathogenic to humans lizard protozoan parasite, Leishmania (L) tarentolae, has been used effectively as a vaccine platform against visceral leishmaniasis in experimental animal models. Correspondingly, pre-exposure to sand fly saliva or immunization with a salivary protein has been shown to protect mice against cutaneous leishmaniasis. METHODOLOGY…

Immunity to sand fly salivary protein LJM11 modulates host response to vector-transmitted leishmania conferring ulcer-free protection.

Leishmania vaccines that protect against needle challenge fail against the potency of a Leishmania-infected sand fly transmission. Here, we demonstrate that intradermal immunization of mice with 500 ng of the sand fly salivary recombinant protein LJM11 (rLJM11) from Lutzomyia longipalpis, in the absence of adjuvant, induces long-lasting immunity that results in ulcer-free protection against Leishmania major delivered by vector bites. This protection is antibody independent and abrogated by depletion of CD4(+) T cells. Two weeks after challenge, early induction of IFN-γ specifically to rLJM11 c…

Leishmania major survival in selective Phlebotomus papatasi sand fly vector requires a specific SCG-encoded lipophosphoglycan galactosylation pattern.

Phlebotomine sand flies that transmit the protozoan parasite Leishmania differ greatly in their ability to support different parasite species or strains in the laboratory: while some show considerable selectivity, others are more permissive. In "selective" sand flies, Leishmania binding and survival in the fly midgut typically depends upon the abundant promastigote surface adhesin lipophosphoglycan (LPG), which exhibits species- and strain-specific modifications of the dominant phosphoglycan (PG) repeat units. For the "selective" fly Phlebotomus papatasi PpapJ, side chain galactosyl-modificati…
