Scleroglucan is a (1,3)-beta-D-glucan polysaccharide produced by the fungus Sclerotium. Dissolved in water at room temperature it adopts a linear, rigid, triple helical structure. Gelation of scleroglucan can be obtained by Schiff-base formation between partly periodate oxidized scleroglucan and the primary amine groups of chitosan. The scleraldehyde-chitosan gels exhibit a collapse transition when exposed to volume fractions of isopropanol, Wp, larger than 65%. The aim of the present study is to provide structural information concerning the local polymer distribution and the collapse transiti

An HPLC method with evaporative light scattering detection (ELSD) for the simultaneous analysis of various lipid classes, particularly alkoxyglycerols and acylglycerols with very similar structure and polarity, has been developed. These lipid classes are frequently found in numerous fats and oils such as shark liver oils and can serve as substrates for lipase-catalyzed reactions. This method utilizes a silica column and a gradient elution of isooctane, methyl tert-butyl ether and 2-propanol in different proportions. Separation between squalene, sterol esters, and fatty acid ethyl esters has be

The high fatality rate associated with the late detection of skin cancer makes early detection crucial in preventing death. The current method for determining if a skin lesion is suspect to cancer is initially based on the patient's and physician's subjective observation of the skin lesion. Physicians use a set of parameters called the ABCD (asymmetry, border, color, diameter) rule to help facilitate diagnosis of potential cancerous lesions. Lesions that are suspicious then require a biopsy, which is a painful, invasive, and a time-consuming procedure. In an attempt to reduce the aforementione

The transport of glucose-6-phosphate (G6P), glucose, and orthophosphate into liver microsomes, isolated from six patients with various subtypes of type 1 glycogen storage disease (GSD), was measured using a light-scattering method. We found that G6P, glucose, and phosphate could all cross the microsomal membrane, in four cases of type 1a GSD. In contrast, liver microsomal transport of G6P and phosphate was deficient in the GSD 1b and 1c patients, respectively. These results support the involvement of multiple proteins (and genes) in GSD type 1. The results obtained with the light-scattering me

To characterize volume regulatory mechanisms, unidirectional Rb+ efflux and influx, unidirectional Cl- influx, and cell volume were measured in cultured human retinal pigment epithelium (HRPE). The HRPE was found to be capable of both regulatory volume increase (RVI), in response to a hypertonic challenge, and regulatory volume decrease (RVD), in response to a hypotonic challenge. Bumetanide-sensitive Rb+ influx increased almost threefold on incubation in a hypertonic (390 mosmol/kgH2O) medium. Bumetanide-insensitive Rb+ influx was activated by hypotonic (190 mosmol/kgH2O) challenge as well as

Neutrophils (PMNs) from patients with adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) were assessed for light scattering, membrane potential, and phagocytic responses using fluorescent probes and flow cytometry to evaluate individual cells. Qualitative and quantitative oxidant responses were measured by nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) and cytochrome c reduction assays, respectively. The results were correlated with the proportion of cells binding the PMN subset-specific monoclonal antibody 31D8. Despite an increased forward scatter signal (4.3 +/- 1.6 vs. 1.3 +/- 1.1 ARDS vs. control, P = 0.041) and sp

Radiation exposure remains an unavoidable part of modern stone management. Patients with urolithiasis may receive ionising radiation during diagnosis, surgical treatment and follow-up, particularly when computed tomography, plain radiography and intraoperative fluoroscopy are repeatedly used. In parallel, urologists and operating room staff are exposed to scattered radiation during endourological procedures, especially in complex or prolonged cases. Although the individual risk of radiation-induced malignancy in this setting is difficult to quantify and should not be overstated, cumulative exp

Introduction: The RADPAD is a novel lead-free shield that can be positioned directly in the surgical field to block scatter radiation. The primary objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness and added protection of the RADPAD compared with conventional lead during simulated percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). Methods: To simulate a PCNL, a radiographical phantom patient and a mannequin surgeon were utilized. Using a real-time dosimeter, radiation doses were measured in µSv at seven surgeon locations: head, neck, chest, abdomen, pelvis, forearm, and leg. Two shielding strategies we

Interventional radiology (fluoroscopically-guided) techniques are being used by an increasing number of clinicians not adequately trained in radiation safety or radiobiology. Many of these interventionists are not aware of the potential for injury from these procedures or the simple methods for decreasing their incidence. Many patients are not being counselled on the radiation risks, nor followed up when radiation doses from difficult procedures may lead to injury. Some patients are suffering radiation-induced skin injuries and younger patients may face an increased risk of future cancer. Inte

BACKGROUND: Radiation exposure during invasive cardiovascular procedures remains an important health care issue. Lead aprons and shields (LAS) are used to decrease radiation exposure but leave large portions of the body unshielded. The Rampart IC M1128 is a portable radiation shielding system that may significantly attenuate radiation exposure.
METHODS: Catheterization laboratory teams were randomized in a 1:1 fashion to perform elective invasive cardiovascular procedures utilizing either traditional LAS or the Rampart IC M1128. Radiation exposure was measured using real-time dosimetry monito

Cells from individuals with genetic diseases ataxia telangiectasia (AT) and Fanconi anemia (FA) exhibit hypersensitivity to ionizing radiation (AT) or DNA cross-linking agents (FA) which may be caused by multiple factors including defects in chromatin structure and DNA repair. In this study, a combination of cytometric techniques was employed to study the chromatin conformation of AT and FA cells. Nuclei of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and of skin fibroblasts established from AT and FA patients were analyzed by light scattering and fluorimetric titration with the DNA-intercalatin

OBJECTIVES: Transradial access for percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) reduces procedural complications however, there are concerns regarding the potential for increased exposure to ionizing radiation to the primary operator. We evaluated the efficacy of a lead-attenuator in reducing radiation exposure during transradial PCI.
METHODS AND RESULTS: This was a non-randomized, prospective, observational study in which 52 consecutive patients were assigned to either standard operator protection (n = 26) or the addition of the lead attenuator across their abdomen/pelvis (n = 26). In the attenu

Accurate classification of lymphoma cell subtypes is essential for disease diagnosis and therapeutic decision-making, yet conventional approaches often rely on fluorescence labeling, labor-intensive sample preparation, and specialized instrumentation, limiting their applicability for rapid, label-free single-cell analysis. Here, we present an AI-assisted microfluidic light-scattering imaging platform for label-free classification of lymphoma cells. The platform integrates hydrodynamic focusing within a microfluidic chip, continuous acquisition of two-dimensional (2D) light-scattering patterns,

BACKGROUND: Cone-beam CT (CBCT) has been extensively employed in industrial and medical applications, such as image-guided radiotherapy and diagnostic imaging, with a growing demand for quantitative imaging using CBCT. However, conventional CBCT can be easily compromised by scatter and beam hardening artifacts, and the entanglement of scatter and spectral effects introduces additional complexity.
PURPOSE: The intertwined scatter and spectral effects within CBCT pose significant challenges to the quantitative performance of spectral imaging. In this work, we present the first attempt to develo

BACKGROUND: Dual-energy (DE) detection of bone marrow edema (BME) would be a valuable new diagnostic capability for the emerging orthopedic cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) systems. However, this imaging task is inherently challenging because of the narrow energy separation between water (edematous fluid) and fat (health yellow marrow), requiring precise artifact correction and dedicated material decomposition approaches.
PURPOSE: We investigate the feasibility of BME assessment using kV-switching DE CBCT with a comprehensive CBCT artifact correction framework and a two-stage projection-

PURPOSE: Clinical trials have demonstrated that retinal blood flow deficiencies are present in patients with open-angle glaucoma (OAG). We introduce a method for facilitating retinal vessel analysis: The intensity of the distal shadow of vessels in optical coherence tomography (OCT) caused by the scattered signal is analyzed, compared between healthy subjects and OAG patients and correlated with OCT angiography (OCT-A) flow density.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We recruited 80 patients with diagnosed OAG (mean age 63.4 ± 13.2 years) and 80 healthy age-matched control subjects for comparison, and 20

We report enhanced room temperature photoluminescence from ordered arrays of few micrometers long cadmium sulfide nanotubes fabricated using 'nanoscale chemical reactors' of porous alumina by a unique two-chamber synthesis without using any surfactants. Photoluminescence from these nanotubes is -20 times larger than that of nanocrystalline cadmium sulfide particles prepared by bulk mixing of the same reactants. However, we rule out any quantum size effect as a source of enhanced photoluminescence from these intentionally un-passivated nanotubes. We identify sulfur deficiency in these nanotubes

This work designs an enzyme-stimulated nanogel aggregation system for the naked-eye assays of α-amylase activity. The visible aggregation of the starch-stabilized CdTe nanogels may be accelerated by α-amylase through its efficient cleavage of glycosidic bonds in the starch network, which has been verified by the evidences from transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering spectra. The required aggregation time, as validated by both the theoretical deduction and the experimental results, is inversely proportional to the enzymatic activity. Therefore a facile method has been prop
