Camouflaging involves hiding one's autistic characteristics in social situations. This mixed methods systematic review synthesized research on psychosocial factors associated with camouflaging and its relationship with mental well-being. Six databases were searched. The 58 included studies (40 qualitative, 13 quantitative, five mixed methods), encompassed 4808 autistic and 1780 non-autistic participants, and predominantly featured White, female, and late-diagnosed autistic adults with likely at least average intellectual and/or verbal abilities. Following a convergent integrated approach, quan

The 11th version of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) includes complex posttraumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) as a separate diagnostic entity alongside posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). ICD-11 CPTSD is defined by six sets of symptoms, three that are shared with PTSD (reexperiencing in the here and now, avoidance, and sense of current threat) and three (affective dysregulation, negative self-concept, and disturbances in relationships) representing pervasive "disturbances in self-organization" (DSO). There is considerable evidence supporting the construct validity of ICD-1

Little attention was paid to the prevalence of depression in Chinese juvenile delinquents who are studied in correctional work-study schools. Hence, the present study aimed to test the unique, mediating and moderating effects of negative life events, self-esteem, rumination and parental divorce on depression among Chinese juvenile delinquents. A total of 236 juvenile delinquents aged between 12 and 17 years old (M = 14.68 SD = 1.30) were recruited to accomplish a battery of self-report questionnaires concerning their negative life events, self-esteem, rumination, depression and demographic pro

OBJECTIVE: Patients with eating disorders report the experience of living with an eating disorder voice, a second- or third-person, negative commentary about eating, weight, shape and their implications for self-esteem. Qualitative and cross-sectional studies suggest that the severity and characteristics of the eating disorder voice might play a role in the maintenance of eating disorder symptoms. The goal of this study was to expand the evidence base as to how the eating disorder voice changes over time and whether the characteristics of the voice are associated with changes in eating disorde

PURPOSE: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a deformity of the spine that results in external asymmetry of the torso in the shoulder, waist, and rib hump. Several patient reported outcome measures (PROMS) including the Trunk Appearance Perception Scale (TAPS) and SRS-22r self-image domain are used to measure the patient's self-perception. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between objective surface topographic measurements of the torso to subjective patient self-perception.
METHODS: 131 AIS subjects and 37 controls participated in this study. All subjects compl

Muscle dysmorphia (MD) is a mental disorder characterised by preoccupation that one lacks muscularity and/or leanness, leading to substantial functional impairment. This article is the second of a two-part qualitative study examining the phenomenology of MD among 29 adults with diagnosed MD. We used reflexive thematic analysis to generate five themes which capture the role of exercise in the lives of people with MD. In summary, participants were highly motivated by a constant desire to progress their strength and appearance, and bad or missed workouts which threatened to derail their progress

OBJECTIVES: Sharing similar negative age stereotypes (e.g., outdated, unfashionable), older adults and older technologies are stereotypically associated with each other. This also was found to be internalized by older adults. Recent research has suggested that internalized negative age stereotypes may be one of the reasons for technophobia among older adults. Therefore, considering the pervasiveness of intergenerational comparison of technologies (e.g., computer vs. tablet) in which older-generation technologies are negatively portrayed, we aim to investigate whether a mere intergenerational c

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) manifests in adolescents, serving as a forerunner for later dysfunctionality and life constraints. BPD is characterized by multiple difficulties in understanding the self and others, and it has been implied that intrapsychic processes of reasoning might be the primary driver of these disturbances. In this study, we examined the role of narrative identity, the dynamic and evolving story people construct about their personal pasts, presents, and futures, as a potentially important but largely overlooked aspect of temporal reasoning within the intrapsychic sy

Identity diffusion is one of the defining characteristics of borderline personality disorder (BPD). Given its central importance in the formal diagnostic criteria for personality disorders, identity diffusion is remarkably under-researched. In particular, our knowledge of the phenomenology of identity diffusion needs to be improved. This study is based on semistructured interviews with 16 younger women SCID-5-diagnosed with BPD. All interviews were analyzed using the interpretative phenomenological analysis approach. On the basis of this analysis, the patients' descriptions of how identity dif

OBJECTIVE: Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is associated with low self-esteem. The aim of this meta-analysis was to examine the strength of the cross-sectional relationship between BDD symptom severity and global self-esteem in individuals with BDD, mentally healthy controls, community or student samples, and cosmetic surgery patients. Moreover, the role of depressive symptom severity in this relationship and other moderating factors were investigated.
METHODS: A keyword-based literature search was performed to identify studies in which BDD symptoms and global self-esteem were assessed. Random

BACKGROUND: Although geriatric depression is a public health concern in mainland China, findings about its psychological risk and protective factors have been inconsistent, and its prevention programmes have been deficient. To improve interventions for geriatric depression, we designed a study to systematically estimate the effect size of those factors.
METHODS: To identify psychological risk and protective factors of geriatric depression, we conducted two independent literature searches in English- and Chinese-language databases, and we used a random effects model to analyse effect sizes.

Depression rates for youth remanded to juvenile detention is double that of the general population and Black girls are especially vulnerable. A dearth of literature analyzes the factors that are correlated with depression among system-involved Black girls, ages 12-17 years old. We utilized personal agency to examine the relationship between risk factors (i.e., abuse history, and fear of condom negotiation) and protective factors (i.e., condom self-efficacy, and perceived social support) that might correlate with depression among Black girls exposed to violence. Findings indicate that fear of c

Identifying the potential pathways linking childhood abuse to depression and suicidal ideation is critical for developing effective interventions. This study investigated implicit self-esteem-unconscious valenced self-evaluation-as a potential pathway linking childhood abuse with depression and suicidal ideation. A sample of youth aged 8-16 years (N = 240) completed a self-esteem Implicit Association Test (IAT) and assessments of abuse exposure, and psychopathology symptoms, including depression, suicidal ideation, anxiety, and externalizing symptoms. Psychopathology symptoms were re-assessed
