Testing the latent structure, factorial equivalence, and external correlates of the brief self-control scale in a community sample of Spanish adults.

The Brief Self-Control Scale (BSCS) is a 13-item personality measure capturing how people differ in their capacity to exert self-control. Although the BSCS was originally regarded as a one-dimensional scale, subsequent psychometric studies have provided support for the empirical distinction of two and four interrelated but distinct components of self-control. Using a large sample of Spanish adults (n = 1,558; 914 female, 58.7%), we performed a comprehensive data-driven comparison of the most well-established item-level latent structures for the BSCS. Results showed that the differentiation bet

Six-Month Pilot Testing of a Digital Health Tool to Support Effective Self-Care in People With Heart Failure: Mixed Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Digital tools may support people to self-manage their heart failure (HF). Having previously outlined the human-centered design development of a digital tool to support self-care of HF, the next step was to pilot the tool over a period of time to establish people's acceptance of it in practice. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to conduct an observational pilot study to examine the usability, adherence, and feasibility of a digital health tool for HF within the Irish health care system. METHODS: A total of 19 participants with HF were provided with a digital tool comprising a mobile app

Acceptability of six-monthly PrEP dispensing supported with interim HIV self-testing to simplify PrEP delivery in Kenya: findings from qualitative research.

BACKGROUND: In Africa, dispensing oral HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) within already strained public health facilities has led to prolonged waiting periods and suboptimal experiences for clients. We sought to explore the acceptability of dispensing PrEP semiannually with interim HIV self-testing (HIVST) versus quarterly PrEP dispensing with clinic-based HIV testing to optimize clinic-delivered PrEP services. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study within a non-inferiority individual-level randomized controlled trial testing the effect of six-monthly PrEP dispensing with HIVST compared …

How does online postal self-sampling (OPSS) shape access to testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs)? A qualitative study of service users.

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a serious public health issue in many countries. Online postal self-sampling (OPSS) is increasingly used to test for STIs, a trend accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. There remains limited understanding of how service users experience OPSS and what leads them to access it over clinic-based services, or vice versa. This research seeks to address these gaps, by undertaking a large qualitative study which sits within the ASSIST study, a mixed-methods, realist evaluation of OPSS. METHODS: Participants were recruited via clinic-based and onl

Reaching Adolescent Girls and Young Women With HIV Self-Testing and Contraception at Girl-Friendly Drug Shops: A Randomized Trial in Tanzania.

PURPOSE: We hypothesized that an intervention designed to create girl-friendly drug shops would increase access to sexual and reproductive health products and services among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) (ages 15-24 years) in Tanzania. METHODS: We conducted a four-month randomized trial at 20 drug shops in Shinyanga, Tanzania from August-December 2019 to determine if the Malkia Klabu ("Queen Club") intervention increased AGYW patronage and the provision of HIV self-testing (HIVST), contraception, and health facility referrals to AGYW (primary outcomes). Drug shops were randomized 1:…

High-Risk Human Papillomavirus Messenger RNA Testing Using Urine, Cervicovaginal Self-Collected and Provider-Collected Cervical Samples Among Women in Mombasa, Kenya.

We compared human papillomavirus messenger RNA testing using urine, self-, and provider-collected samples for the detection of high-grade cervical cytology and assessed acceptability of urine self-collection among females who engage in sex work in Kenya. Participants found urine sampling comfortable, but high-risk human papillomavirus messenger RNA detection in urine samples was less likely to detect high-grade lesions than self- and provider-collected cervical samples.

Individual and network factors associated with HIV self-testing among men who have sex with men in resource-limited settings in China.

BACKGROUND: HIV self-testing (HIVST) is a potential strategy to overcome challenges of HIV testing among men who have sex with men (MSM). However, for resource-limited settings, technology and diagnostic devices are lagging. Hence, we estimated the status and correlates of HIVST among MSM in resource-limited settings in China to inform the development of HIVST to reach United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS) targets to end HIV by 2030. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among MSM in Nanning, Guangxi, China, between August 2019 and January 2020. The HIVST status was colle…

Three-site screening for STIs in men who have sex with men using online self-testing in an English sexual health service.

OBJECTIVES: Among men who have sex with men (MSM) in the UK,Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoea (NG) infections commonly occur asymptomatically at extragenital sites. Therefore, MSM seeking sexual health services are offered three-site (oropharyngeal, rectal and urogenital) STI screening. To increase access to screening, some UK sexual health services enable asymptomatic service users to order free STI screening kits online for self-sampling at home. We sought to assess prevalence of overall and extragenital CT/NG infection among asymptomatic MSM who used online self-testing in…

High Acceptance and Completion of HIV Self-testing Among Diverse Populations of Young People in Kenya Using a Community-Based Distribution Strategy.

Oral HIV self-testing (HIVST) may expand access to testing among hard-to-reach reach adolescents and young adults (AYA). We evaluated community-based HIVST services for AYA in an urban settlement in Kenya. Peer-mobilizers recruited AYA ages 15-24 through homes, bars/clubs, and pharmacies. Participants were offered oral HIVST, optional assistance and post-test counseling. Outcomes were HIVST acceptance and completion (self-report and returned kits). Surveys were given at enrollment, post-testing, and 4 months. Log-binomial regression evaluated HIVST preferences by venue. Among 315 reached, 87% …

Investigation of the reinforcing potential of samidorphan and naltrexone by fixed and progressive ratio intravenous self-administration testing in heroin-maintained rats.

BACKGROUND: Samidorphan is a novel μ-opioid antagonist with low intrinsic activity at κ- and δ-opioid receptors. AIMS: Because samidorphan is central nervous system-active, we investigated whether samidorphan (13.6, 40.8, 68 μg/kg/injection) served as a positive reinforcer in rats trained to self-administer heroin on a fixed ratio-5 schedule. Samidorphan's relative reinforcing effect was evaluated by progressive ratio/break-point determination. Naltrexone (13.6, 40.8, 68 μg/kg/injection) and heroin (7.5, 15, 25 μg/kg/injection) were comparators. RESULTS: All heroin doses maintained self-admi

Self-collection of samples as an additional approach to deliver testing services for sexually transmitted infections: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Self-collection of samples for diagnostic testing offers the advantages of patient autonomy, confidentiality and convenience. Despite data showing their feasibility and accuracy, there is a need to better understand how to implement such interventions for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). To support WHO guidelines on self-care interventions, we conducted a systematic review to investigate whether self-collection of samples should be made available as an additional approach to deliver STI testing services. METHODS: Peer-reviewed studies were included if they compared individu

'I Know that I Do Have HIV but Nobody Saw Me': Oral HIV Self-Testing in an Informal Settlement in South Africa.

Reaching universal HIV-status awareness is crucial to ensure all HIV-infected patients access antiretroviral treatment (ART) and achieve virological suppression. Opportunities for HIV testing could be enhanced by offering self-testing in populations that fear stigma and discrimination when accessing conventional HIV Counselling and Testing (HCT) in health care facilities. This qualitative research aims to examine the feasibility and acceptability of unsupervised oral self-testing for home use in an informal settlement of South Africa. Eleven in-depth interviews, two couple interviews, and two …

Testing the effectiveness of a self-efficacy based exercise intervention for adults with venous leg ulcers: protocol of a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Exercise and adequate self-management capacity may be important strategies in the management of venous leg ulcers. However, it remains unclear if exercise improves the healing rates of venous leg ulcers and if a self-management exercise program based on self-efficacy theory is well adhered to. METHOD/DESIGN: This is a randomised controlled in adults with venous leg ulcers to determine the effectiveness of a self-efficacy based exercise intervention. Participants with venous leg ulcers are recruited from 3 clinical sites in Australia. After collection of baseline data, participants

High-risk human papillomavirus messenger RNA testing in physician- and self-collected specimens for cervical lesion detection in high-risk women, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the performance of physician-versus self-collected specimens for high-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) messenger RNA (mRNA) testing or risk factors for hrHPV mRNA positivity in physician- versus self-collected specimens. We compared the performance of hrHPV mRNA testing of physician- and self-collected specimens for detecting cytological high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions or more severe (≥HSIL) and examined risk factors for hrHPV mRNA positivity in female sex workers in Nairobi. METHODS: From 2009 to 2011, 344 female sex workers participated in this

Self-reported sensory descriptors are associated with quantitative sensory testing parameters in patients with cervical radiculopathy, but not in patients with fibromyalgia.

BACKGROUND: The painDETECT questionnaire (PD-Q) has been used as a tool to characterize sensory abnormalities in patients with persistent pain. This study investigated whether the self-reported sensory descriptors of patients with painful cervical radiculopathy (CxRAD) and patients with fibromyalgia (FM), as characterized by responses to verbal sensory descriptors from PD-Q (sensitivity to light touch, cold, heat, slight pressure, feeling of numbness in the main area of pain), were associated with the corresponding sensory parameters as demonstrated by quantitative sensory testing (QST). [New system for testing mechanical heart valves. Self-monitoring at home of anti-vitamin K therapy means greater freedom for the patient].

Self-monitoring of anti-vitamin K treatment by patients with heart valve prostheses is a good alternative to hospital control. Self-monitoring at home allows patients more freedom and opportunity to take greater responsibility for their treatment. Experience from over a years' complication-free treatment of 12 patients is reported in the article.

HIV testing history among gay/bisexual men recruited in Barcelona: evidence of high levels of risk behavior among self-reported HIV + men.

As part of the first quantitative study of men who have sex with men (MSM) and HIV/ AIDS in Spain, anonymous, self-administered questionnaires were distributed via gay/lesbian organization mailings, bathhouses, and sex shops in Barcelona. We analyzed 547 gay/bisexual men along self-reported HIV testing history-i.e. untested, previously tested HIV-, and previously tested HIV +. Eleven variables discriminated significantly between the three groups in multivariable analysis. HIV- men were over-represented in the mailing subsample. While untested men exhibited potentially protective behaviors (e.g
