INTRODUCTION: Due to the importance that Howler monkeys have on the yellow fever (YF) epidemiological sylvatic cycle in Brazil, more accurate morphological diagnostic criteria needs to be established, especially considering the differences that may exist between the genera of Brazilian non-human primates (NHPs) involved in yellow fever virus (YFV) epizootics.
METHODS: Records of YF epizootics in NHPs in Brazil between 2007 and 2009 were obtained from the Brazilian Ministry of Health database to select YF positive (n=98) Howler monkeys (Alouatta sp.) for this study. The changes described in th

In Chile swine trichinosis has presented a progressive decreasing in the last two decades of XX century. T. spiralis pig infection descended from an average of 0.683 per 1000 in 1980-1984 to 0.315 in 1985-1989 and to 0.115 in 1990-1996. In the particular case of Metropolitan Region this decreasing has been more marked: from an average of 0.058 per 1000 in 1990-1994 to 0.003 in 1995-1999. Between the end of June 1999 and middle January 2000 in Metropolitan Region abattoirs T. spiralis was detected in 15 (4.9%) out of 306 swine from two pigsties located in El Monte (E.M.) and Padre Hurtado (P.H.

Thirty-four heifers not conceiving to three or more inseminations or natural service were bled and karyotyped by leucocyte culture. Twelve were found to be sex-chromosome chimeras of which five were single-born. Three out of the five singleton sex-chromosome chimeric heifers were slaughtered and at post mortem examination abnormalities of the reproductive tract were observed. Two the the slaughtered animals were Friesian heifers that had shown normal oestrous cycles and had reproductive organs apparently normal on clinical examination; however, one of them with 5 per cent male cells had a nonp

Rabies, a disease of antiquity continues to be a major public health problem in India. Multiple factors contribute to high mortality and morbidity due to animal bites. An effective strategy for control of rabies takes into account the epidemiology of animal bites, rabies and factors influencing post exposure treatment. The study was carried out as a part of Agreement for Performance of Work (APW) from World Health Organization (WHO) during the period April 2001 to September 2002. Two sets of proformae were developed and used after field testing to interview cases of animal bites and get retros

The use of antimicrobial substances in human and veterinary medicine inevitably results in a selection pressure for drug resistance in exposed bacteria. Preventive measures, apt to avoid the consequent development of new resistances and selection for existing ones, respectively, have to be elaborated. Moreover, it has to be ensured that neither resistant bacteria nor resistance genes are spread to and consequently via the food chain. Respiratory diseases as well as mastitis in dairy cattle belong to the most frequently occurring diseases in food-producing animals. For the first time in Germany

BACKGROUND: Xylazine, a sedative analgesic drug approved as an animal tranquilizer but not for human use, has become an adulterant in the illicit opioid marketplace in North America. Recently declared an emerging health threat in the U.S., the prevalence of xylazine in overdose deaths increased 5.5-fold between 2019 and 2021. More information is needed about the impact of xylazine on opioid users and harm reduction service providers.
METHODS: The impact of xylazine adulteration was triangulated through examination of (1) opioid overdose fatalities in Connecticut between 2017 and 2021 reported

BACKGROUND: Bovine Taenia saginata cysticercus infections (also called bovine cysticercosis or beef measles) is usually diagnosed in cattle only during post-mortem meat inspection. The aim of this study was to investigate the identification rates of these infections in and to identify predictors/determinants of variations in the identification rates in abattoirs in Gauteng province, South Africa.
METHODS: Retrospective data for over 1.4 million cattle carcasses inspected in 26 abattoirs between January 2010 and December 2013 were used for the study. The identification rates (proportion of bov

Agriculture is a very important contributor to the Irish economy. In Ireland, national animal health services have been a government, rather than an industry, responsibility. In 2009, Animal Health Ireland (AHI) was established to provide a partnership approach to national leadership of non-regulatory animal health issues (those not subject to national and/or EU regulation). The objectives of this study were to elicit opinion from experts and farmers about non-regulatory animal health issues facing Irish livestock industries, including prioritisation of animal health issues and identification

OBJECTIVES: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a serious threat to human and animal health; the emergence of 3rd-generation cephalosporin- and fluoroquinolone-resistant Enterobacterales is particularly problematic. Because Escherichia coli is the most common cause of urinary tract infections in dogs, AMR has real-world impact. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the antimicrobial susceptibility of canine urinary isolates of E. coli and to determine if AMR is increasing in Saskatchewan.
ANIMALS AND PROCEDURE: A total of 576 diagnostic isolates of canine urinary E. coli from individual

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a vector-borne zoonotic disease that has caused widespread outbreaks throughout Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, with serious consequences for livestock-based economies and public health. Although there have never been any reports of RVF in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya, it is a priority disease in the Maghreb, due to the threat of introduction of the virus through transboundary livestock movements or infected mosquito vectors. However, the implementation of surveillance activities and early warning contingency plans requires better knowledge of the epidemiolo

The rise in subsidized spay-neuter access helped drive the euthanasia of shelter pets in the US from an estimated 13. 5 million in 1973 to 1.5 million in 2019. When the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic triggered lockdowns beginning in March 2020, many veterinary providers suspended nonessential services such as routine spay-neuter surgeries. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the volume of spay-neuter procedures performed by spay-neuter clinics. A retrospective study of patient data from 212 spay-neuter clinics using Clinic HQ practice management

BACKGROUND: Despite the highest population, the productivity of Ethiopian livestock is low, and the direct contribution to the national economy is limited. Poor genetic potential, shortage of feed in quantity and quality, poor health care and management practices are the main contributors to low productivity and production. Data on animal disease and management practices are not in place, in this regard; we estimate the burden of animal health ailments and management practices in ruminants via simple cross-sectional study design in randomly selected peasant associations in western Tigray of no

BACKGROUND: Rabies is a deadly infectious disease that affects humans and animals. Human cases are preventable through vaccination and rabies can be eliminated by applying the One Health approach to build integrated, operational and innovative health systems. However, in the context of Burkina Faso, animal and human rabies systems are not properly inter-connected. Despite several initiatives conducted in Burkina Faso for decades by animal health and human health stakeholders (including vaccination of domestic carnivores, post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), awareness raising), the country is still

BACKGROUND: Spiders of medical importance in the Amazon region belong to the genera Phoneutria, Loxosceles and Latrodectus. Natural history data show that Phoneutria spp. occur in both periodically flooded forest areas (igapós) and non-flooded areas (terra firme), as well as in commercial plantations in the Amazon. Negative interactions with wandering spiders (Phoneutria spp.) can occur along forest trails, leading to homes, schools and workplaces. Harmful species, such as Loxosceles amazonica and Latrodectus aff. curacaviensis, are mainly associated with accidents in rural settings.
