An Assessment of Gender Differences in Plastic Surgery Patient Education and Information in the United States: Are We Neglecting Our Male Patients?

BACKGROUND: The number of total cosmetic procedures performed yearly has increased by more than 274% between 1997 and 2014, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. However, the vast majority of plastic surgery procedures are still targeted toward women, with little attention toward men. OBJECTIVES: This study sought to quantify the extent of gender discrepancies observed in online plastic surgery marketing in this country. METHODS: For the 48 contiguous United States, a systematic Google (Mountain View, CA) search was performed for "[state] plastic surgeon." The firs

[Epidemiology of obsessive-compulsive disorder].

In the article the problems of prevalence of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), comorbidity with other mental disorders and the most commonly used diagnostic instruments were presented. Epidemiological data indicate OCD as the fourth most common mental disorder, which appears as frequent as asthma or diabetes. In an international study from 1994 the year's prevalence of OCD was from 1.1% to 1.8%. In each country obsessions and compulsions appear with different intensity, what can testify for certain cultural conditionings of disorder. Men suffer from OCD equally often as women, however both

Suicide Among Older People in Spain: The Role of Sex and Urbanicity.

OBJECTIVES: Suicide rates are driven by availability of lethal means, increase with age, and are often higher in rural versus urban areas. This study examines temporal and geographic variations in suicides among elderly with a focus on rural-urban differences in method-specific suicide rates among people aged 65 and older in Spain, a rapidly aging country. METHODS: Population-based study including all suicides among people over 65 in Spain between 2010 and 2022. We examined overall and method-specific suicide rates and their temporal and geographical variation, stratifying results by sex and

Trends and gender disparities in the incidence of rheumatic diseases: a regional study from 2018 to 2021.

Rheumatic diseases encompass a range of entities affecting the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue due to immune dysregulation. These entities include rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and ankylosing spondylitis that present significant medical and social challenges by impacting individuals' quality of life and working capacity. In developing countries, where healthcare access is limited, the burden of these diseases is particularly severe. Analyzing the regional epidemiological characteristics of rheumatic diseases may enhance our understanding of risk factors and a

Reduction in young male suicide in Scotland.

BACKGROUND: Rates of suicide and undetermined death increased rapidly in Scotland in the 1980's and 1990's. The largest increases were in men, with a marked increase in rates in younger age groups. This was associated with an increase in hanging as a method of suicide. National suicide prevention work has identified young men as a priority group. Routinely collected national information suggested a decrease in suicide rates in younger men at the beginning of the 21st century. This study tested whether this was a significant change in trend, and whether it was associated with any change in hang

Gender differences in prevalence of upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders.

A literature review was conducted on the current literature base to determine the strength of support for the hypothesis that women experience higher prevalences of upper extremity musculoskeletal disorders (UEMSDs) than men. Fifty-six articles were reviewed for data on gender differences in frequency, incidence or prevalence rates for musculoskeletal disorders specific to the upper extremities. These articles included both general and working populations. The majority of the studies showed that women had significantly higher incidences of various types of UEMSDs than men. This trend was consi

Kinase CDK2 in Mammalian Meiotic Prophase I: Screening for Hetero- and Homomorphic Sex Chromosomes.

Cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs) are crucial regulators of the eukaryotic cell cycle. The critical role of CDK2 in the progression of meiosis was demonstrated in a single mammalian species, the mouse. We used immunocytochemistry to study the localization of CDK2 during meiosis in seven rodent species that possess hetero- and homomorphic male sex chromosomes. To compare the distribution of CDK2 in XY and XX male sex chromosomes, we performed multi-round immunostaining of a number of marker proteins in meiotic chromosomes of the rat and subterranean mole voles. Antibodies to the following protein

Substrain differences in Sry expression at the stage of sex determination in C57BL/6 mouse strains.

The expression of sex determining region of the Y chromosome (Sry) in the fetal gonads is important for male development. In a mouse model of disorders of sex development (C57BL/6 (B6)-XYPOS), the gonadal phenotype and the timing of Sry expression differ due to differences among B6 substrains as the genetic background. Since differences in Sry expression among B6 substrains have been speculated, the present study examined Sry expression in B6J, B6JJmsSlc, and B6NCrl mice. These substrains differed in the number of Sry-expressing cells in the gonads of embryonic mice at each developmental stage

Sex Differences in Early Stages of Cardiovascular-Kidney-Metabolic Syndrome in Adolescents: Associations With Dietary and Lifestyle Factors.

PURPOSE: The cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic syndrome (CKM) framework captures interconnected risks of adiposity, metabolic dysregulation, kidney disease, and cardiovascular disease, yet sex-specific differences in CKM stage distribution and lifestyle associations remain underexplored in adolescents. This study examined sex-specific CKM stage prevalence, the distribution of stage-1 features within stage-2 subgroups, and associations with modifiable lifestyle factors in US adolescents. METHODS: We analyzed National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2017-2020 data for 1,387 adolescents ag

[Diagnosis, etiopathogenesis and therapy of carpal tunnel syndrome].

This is a retrospective study analyzing the operation records of 637 patients cured for carpal tunnel syndrome. No statistical difference could be demonstrated between the mean age of female compared to male. However a highly significant statistical difference between age distribution in between sex could be demonstrated (p = 0.0015). 61.3% of the female (male: 47.6%) are affected by the disease between 40 and 65 years and only 16.4% (male 27.6%) later on. Under 40 years of age both sex are affected in the same proportion. This confirms that hormonal factors related to sex play a major role in

Factors associated with gravity-dependent distribution on chest CT in elderly patients with community-acquired pneumonia: a retrospective observational study.

Although lung involvement in aspiration pneumonia typically has a gravity-dependent distribution on chest images, which patient's conditions contribute to its radiological pattern has not been fully elucidated. This study was designed to determine the factors associated with the gravity-dependent distribution of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) on chest computed tomography (CT). This retrospective study included elderly patients aged ≥ 65 years with CAP who underwent chest CT within 1 week before or after admission. The factors associated with lower lobe- and posterior-predominant distributi

Statistical estimators of frontal sinus cross section ontogeny from very noisy data.

Cross-sectional areas of human frontal sinuses in the occipitofrontal projection are a good surrogate for frontal sinus volumes. This study looks at these areas in a dataset of some 200 children and 100 adults of both sexes. As measured by planimetry of roentgenograms, the areas are extremely variable ("noisy" in a statistical sense). In fact, they appear to be distributed log-normally with quite high variance. The mean of the distribution is evidently a function of age and the variances differ by sex. After logarithmic transformation, the data are adequately fitted by one sigmoid curve for ea

Does fetal sex affect pregnancy outcome?

BACKGROUND: In maternal fetal medicine, gender differences in outcome are often observed. OBJECTIVE: This article reviews the fetal sex-dependent differences found in many aspects of pregnancy, from conception through birth. METHODS: The MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Current Contents databases were searched, for the years 1985 to 2006, using the following Medical Subject Headings and text words: fetal gender, finale, female, sex ratio at birth, pregnancy outcome, preterm birth, and stillbirth. The search was not limited by language. In addition, the bibliographies of known relevant articles were exam

Acute appendicitis: Clinical anatomy of the new palpation sign.

INTRODUCTION: Currently, diagnosis of acute appendicitis (AA) is challenging. Here, we aim to propose using the new palpation sign to diagnose AA and establish the effectiveness of clinical examination using a proprietary diagnostic palpation procedure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 2,883 patients of all ages who were examined for suspected AA, of whom 532 patients required surgical intervention, using the new palpation sign. Patients were divided into three age categories. Based on the correlation between clinical data and histological findings, clinical examination find

The genomes of a monogenic fly: views of primitive sex chromosomes.

The production of male and female offspring is often determined by the presence of specific sex chromosomes which control sex-specific expression, and sex chromosomes evolve through reduced recombination and specialized gene content. Here we present the genomes of Chrysomya rufifacies, a monogenic blow fly (females produce female or male offspring, exclusively) by separately sequencing and assembling each type of female and the male. The genomes (> 25X coverage) do not appear to have any sex-linked Muller F elements (typical for many Diptera) and exhibit little differentiation between groups s
