Textured insoles may improve some gross motor balance measures but not endurance measures in children with motor coordination issues. A randomised controlled feasibility trial.

BACKGROUND: Motor coordination concerns are estimated to affect 5%-6% of school-aged children. Motor coordination concerns have variable imp … reliable and validated scale across two cities within Australia. We randomly allocated children to shoes only or shoes and textured insoles. We collected data across six feasibility domains; demand (recruitment), acceptability (via interview) implementation (adherence), practicality (via interview and adverse events), adaptation (via interview) and lim …

The Submaximal Lateral Shuffle Test: A reliability and sensitivity analysis.

Lateral ankle stability and how it changes in different footwear has been investigated for years. Research, however, has shown a lack of rel … ersion and adduction angles and lower medio-lateral push off peak forces were found in the high cut shoes compared to the low cut shoes. The medio-lateral landing peak force showed lower forces in the high cut shoes. The smallest worthwhile change indicated meaningful differences in 70.0-82.5% of participants for inversion, adduction, medio-lateral land …

Does Heel Height Cause Imbalance during Sit-to-Stand Task: Surface EMG Perspective.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether electromyography (EMG) muscle activities around the knee differ during sit-to-stand (STS) and returning task for females wearing shoes with different heel heights. Sixteen healthy young women (age = 25.2 ± 3.9 years, body mass index = 20.8 ± 2.7 kg/m2) participated in this study. Electromyography signals were recorded from the two muscles, vastus medialis (VM) and vastus lateralis (VL) that involve in the extension of knee. The participants wore shoes with five different heights, including 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 cm. Surface electromyography (sEMG…

Metatarsal bars more effective than metatarsal pads in reducing impulse on the second metatarsal head.

BACKGROUND: The second metatarsal head is commonly involved in cases of metatarsalgia. As part of the conservative treatment, metatarsal bars and metatarsal pads are often prescribed. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effectiveness of metatarsal bars and metatarsal pads in reducing impulse on the second metatarsal head. METHOD: Thirty-five healthy subjects were monitored with an insole scanning system during walking in four different conditions: (a) wearing shoes only, (b) shoes plus metatarsal pads and shoes plus metatarsal bars, placed either (c) perpendicular to the foot axis or (d) oblique to th…

Advanced Footwear Technology Slows Oxygen Uptake Drift and Reduces Neuromuscular Fatigue During Extended Running.

PURPOSE: To evaluate whether advanced footwear technology (AFT) reduces the rise in oxygen uptake (V˙O2) and neuromuscular fatigue during extended submaximal running compared with traditional running shoes. METHODS: Fifteen trained distance runners (7 women, 8 men; 23.2 [1.6] y; 65.5 [7.8] kg) completed two 60-minute treadmill runs at ∼75% of critical speed, wearing either control shoes (Saucony Kinvara) or AFT (Saucony Endorphin Pro 3) in a randomized crossover design. V˙O2 was measured continuously using a portable metabolic system, and ground-reaction forces were sampled at minutes 15, 30,…

A methodological proof-of-concept of the teeter-totter effect.

The Nike Vaporfly 4% (VP4) shoe is popular due to its unique design and reported performance benefits. However, the underlying mechanisms responsible for the improvements remain unclear. One proposed mechanism is the teeter-totter effect. This study aimed to 1) experimentally test the teeter-totter theory by estimating the teeter-totter moment (MTT) in the VP4 compared to a flat shoe (CONTROL) and 2) quantify the change in the anterior-posterior position of the centre of pressure (Δxa-p) in the VP4 compared to the CONTROL. Plantar pressures and high-speed video were recorded from 15 runners in

Custom Orthotics to Mitigate Effects of Chemotherapy-induced Peripheral Neuropathy.

BackgroundChemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a complication commonly involving extremities characterized by dysthesias. Gi … mic posturography and accelerometry were used to measure postural sway. Three conditions (barefoot, shoes only, and shoe plus orthotics) were tested to differentiate effects of orthotics and shoes. With orthotic use measures of sway velocity and area improved as did his ability to stand unassisted. Timed Up and Go and gait speed measures also improved.

Biomechanical evaluation of the efficacy of external stabilizers in the conservative treatment of acquired flatfoot deformity.

This study quantified and compared the efficacy of in-shoe orthoses and ankle braces in stabilizing the hindfoot and medial longitudinal arch in a cadaveric model of acquired flexible flatfoot deformity. This was addressed by combining measurement of hindfoot and arch kinematics with plantar pressure distribution, produced in response to axial loads simulating quiet standing. Experiments were conducted on six fresh-frozen cadaveric lower limbs. Three conditions were tested: intact-unbraced; flatfoot-unbraced; and flatfoot-braced. Flatfoot deformity was created by sectioning the main support st

Typical visual-field locations enhance processing in object-selective channels of human occipital cortex.

Natural environments consist of multiple objects, many of which repeatedly occupy similar locations within a scene. For example, hats are seen on people's heads, while shoes are most often seen close to the ground. Such positional regularities bias the distribution of objects across the visual field: hats are more often encountered in the upper visual field, while shoes are more often encountered in the lower visual field. Here we tested the hypothesis that typical visual field locations of objects facilitate cortical processing. We recorded functional MRI while participants viewed images of o…

Decision making in the treatment of hallux valgus.

The surgeon must determine the pathologic elements that need correction. Close observation for an increased HV angle, increased IM angle, pronation of the first toe, increased DMAA, enlarged medial eminence, and subluxation of the sesamoids must be performed. While there are a large number of procedures available for the management of HV, no one method sufficiently corrects all HV deformities. The upper limits of deformity correction for each procedure vary with the surgeon and their familiarity with each procedure. Ultimately, the surgeon must attempt to maintain a flexible first MTP joint an

Digital foot health technology and diabetic foot monitoring: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: In diabetic foot ulceration, a correlation between pressure and skin temperature is suspected. The aim of this systematic review is to provide a more rigorous analysis of existing literature related to the various technologies used to read and measure both in-shoe plantar pressures, and in-shoe skin temperatures simultaneously. METHODS: A systematic review of the literature related to the topic was searched in database sources such as Medline OVID, Cochrane Library, PubMed, CONAHL, PROSPERO, and Elsevier. Outcome measures of interest included validity, reliability and responsivene

A controlled randomized study of the effect of training with orthoses on the incidence of weight bearing induced back pain among infantry recruits.

STUDY DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial. OBJECTIVES: To determine if the use of custom shoe orthoses can lessen the incidence of weight bearing-induced back pain. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The scientific basis for the use of orthoses to prevent back pain is based principally on studies that show that shoe orthoses can attenuate the shock wave generated at heel strike. The repetitive impulsive loading that occurs because of this shock wave can cause wear of the mechanical structures of the back. Previous randomized studies showed mixed results in preventing back pain, were not blinded, an

[Treatment of hindfoot instability in Charcot foot using a hybrid technique of internal and external fixation].

OBJECTIVE: The main problem of patients with Charcot foot is their inability to off-load. Therefore the risk of internal fixation failure is increased, especially in hindfoot instability (Sanders type IV) with osteonecrosis of the talus. Combination of internal and additional external fixation guarantees the reconstruction and improves surgical outcome. The main objective of this surgery is to obtain a resilient, plantigrade foot that is shoeable in custom-made orthopedic shoes. INDICATIONS: Charcot foot with instable collapse of the hindfoot with or without fragment dislocation, with or with…
