Is poststroke complex regional pain syndrome the combination of shoulder pain and soft tissue injury of the wrist?: A prospective observational study: STROBE of ultrasonographic findings in complex regional pain syndrome.

Patients with poststroke complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) show different symptoms compared to other types of CRPS, as they usually complain of shoulder and wrist pain with the elbow relatively spared. It is thus also known by the term "shoulder-hand syndrome."The aim of this study is to present a possible pathophysiology of poststroke CRPS through ultrasonographic observation of the affected wrist before and after steroid injection at the extensor digitorum communis (EDC) tendon in patients suspected with poststroke CRPS.Prospective evaluation and observation, the STROBE guideline checkli

[Case report: Iatrogenic shoulder pain syndrome following spinal accessory nerve injury during lateral cervical neck dissection for tongue cancer: the role of rehabilitation and ethical-deontological issues].

The shoulder pain syndrome is the most frequent complication of lateral cervical neck dissection and may be caused by iatrogenic injury to the spinal accessory nerve, causing pain and functional limitation of the upper limb and of the cervical spine. Interdisciplinary collaboration and early rehabilitation can reduce the consequences of disability and the possible issues that can arise due to inadequate management of the problem.

Imaging the injured shoulder.

The shoulder is the most mobile and unstable of all the joints in the body, making it highly susceptible to instability and injury. Shoulder injuries often result from excessive or repetitive overhead arm motion. The 3 main categories of shoulder injury are instability, impingement, and rotator cuff injuries. Radiography is the most common screening modality for patients presenting with shoulder pain; however, ultrasonography, magnetic resonance, and computed tomography also are used widely in diagnosis. Treatment for shoulder injury varies with each condition, and surgery may be indicated for…

Relationship Between Upper Limb Injuries and Hip Range of Motion in Elementary and Junior High School Baseball Players.

BACKGROUND: Shoulder and elbow injuries are major problems in baseball players. Tightness of the upper extremities has been reported as a risk factor for shoulder and elbow injuries in elementary and junior high school baseball players. However, few studies have been conducted on the relationship between decreased hip range of motion (ROM) and shoulder and elbow injuries. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: This study aimed to prospectively examine the relationship between hip ROM and throwing-related shoulder and elbow injuries in elementary and junior high school baseball players. The hypothesis was that p

Preoperative testosterone replacement therapy is associated with increased rates of periprosthetic joint infection, acute kidney injury, and emergency department utilization after total shoulder arthroplasty: a propensity-score matched analysis.

BACKGROUND: The use of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) has increased in recent years; however, its effect on surgical outcomes and long-term implant survival in total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) remains unclear. This study aimed to assess the association between preoperative TRT and postoperative complications following TSA. METHODS: The TriNetX database was queried to identify patients undergoing TSA before 2020. Patients were then stratified based on preoperative TRT within 1 year before surgery. Propensity score matching was performed in a 1:1 ratio to balance demographic variables

Toward standardized patient positioning to avoid peripheral nerve injury during laparoscopic colorectal surgery: Application of a protocol and study of the resulting relationship between total rotation time and contact pressure at the shoulder.

INTRODUCTION: Generally, laparoscopic colorectal surgery is performed with the patient in the lithotomy and rotated positions. The lithotomy position, however, is associated with intraoperative peripheral nerve injury (IPNI). We studied the relationship between patient positioning during laparoscopic colorectal surgery, contact pressure at the shoulder, and the occurrence of IPNI and tested a positioning protocol aimed at surgical safety in addition to maintenance of a good surgical field. METHODS: We applied our positioning protocol in 44 cases and collected data that could be used to answer

[Fracture diagnosis: upper extremities : Shoulder and shoulder girdle].

BACKGROUND: The shoulder girdle is a chain of bones and joints which connect the upper extremity to the axial skeleton. The shoulder as a biomechanical unit has a remarkable range of motion and is therefore frequently prone to injuries of the three major joints (sternoclavicular joint, acromioclavicular joint, glenohumeral joint) and the bony elements (clavicle, scapula, humerus). Projection radiography is still the first imaging modality for injuries of the shoulder and usually sufficient for initial diagnosis and injury classification. Computed tomography (including 3D reconstructions) and m

Axillary artery damage from shoulder trauma--a report of 2 cases.

Various shoulder injuries can give rise to axillary artery complications. Two such cases were admitted to Tan Tock Seng Hospital late last year. Both were young adult males, who had developed axillary artery thrombosis secondary to shoulder injuries. The following is a short discussion on the common types of shoulder injuries, how they result in axillary artery compromise and a short section on their management and treatment.

A Comprehensive Radiologic Review of Shoulder Girdle Trauma.

Radiologic knowledge of different fracture patterns involving the shoulder girdle is an important tool to generate clinically relevant reports, identify concomitant injuries, guide management decisions, and predict and minimize complications, such as nonunion, osteoarthritis, osteonecrosis, and hardware failure. Complex unstable injuries like scapulothoracic dissociation can also occur because of shoulder girdle trauma. Management options may vary from conservative to surgical, depending on the fracture type and patient factors. Injuries around the shoulder girdle can involve the glenohumeral

Active shoulder external rotation recovery in upper brachial plexus birth injury following nerve surgery: is spinal accessory nerve-suprascapular nerve transfer superior to C5-suprascapular nerve grafting?

OBJECTIVE: A key residual deficit in brachial plexus birth injury (BPBI) is the lack of active glenohumeral external rotation (ER). Surgical options for reinnervating the suprascapular nerve (SSN) include nerve grafting from a proximal stump and nerve transfer using the spinal accessory nerve (XIN) as a donor. The optimal surgical strategy is unclear from the current literature. This study aimed to compare the outcomes of nerve grafting and nerve transfer for SSN reinnervation in upper trunk BPBI. METHODS: The authors conducted a retrospective study (1990-2020) on prospectively collected data

Rugby and Shoulder Trauma: A Systematic Review.

Rugby is a popular contact sport worldwide. Collisions and tackles during matches and practices often lead to traumatic injuries of the shoulder. This review reports on the epidemiology of injuries, type of lesions and treatment of shoulder injuries, risk factors, such as player position, and return to sport activities. Electronic searches through PubMed (Medline), EMBASE, and Cochrane Library retrieved studies concerning shoulder injuries in rugby players. Data regarding incidence, type and mechanisms of lesion, risk factors and return to sport were extracted and analyzed. The main reported d…

Shoulder dislocations in patients older than 40 years of age.

Shoulder dislocations in patients over 40 years of age are common and are frequently associated with serious injuries to adjacent structures. Associated injuries such as brachial plexus injury, rotator cuff tear, axillary artery injury, fractures about the shoulder, and recurrent dislocation can make shoulder dislocations challenging problems for the clinician. Early diagnosis and treatment of associated injuries and treatment complications are the mainstays in prevention of morbidity and, even, mortality.

Upper extremity physeal injury in young baseball pitchers.

Adolescent baseball players, especially pitchers, are at increased risk for shoulder and elbow injuries as their level of competition increases. The intersection of the adolescent growth spurt with the high levels of elbow valgus and shoulder rotational torques placed upon the arm during overhand pitching predisposes the shoulder and elbow to physeal injuries. Little League shoulder and Little League elbow syndromes most commonly represent pathology at the physeal regions of the proximal and distal humerus and proximal ulna sustained from repetitive loads caused by overhead throwing. There is

Contemporary imaging of the pediatric shoulder: pearls and pitfalls.

In skeletally immature patients, the presence of growth plates and articular cartilage of the shoulder can create a predisposition for unique injuries not observed in adults. Furthermore, increasing participation in sports by children and adolescents appears to be leading to a corresponding increase in the number of sports-related injuries. The importance of radiologists being familiar with pediatric shoulder imaging and its associated injuries is therefore growing. In this article, we review the normal development and maturation pattern of ossification centers of the shoulder from the early g
