A quantification of regenerated bone tissue in human sinus biopsies: influences of anatomical region, age and sex.

OBJECTIVES: Sinus augmentation is a standard procedure to increase vertical bone supply for dental implants in the atrophic posterior maxilla. Despite the longstanding application of this method, information about some basic factors that could potentially influence bone regeneration after sinus augmentation is rare. The objective of this study was therefore to quantify the impact of the maxillary region (premolar/molar) and patients' age and sex on bone regeneration after sinus grafting. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sinus augmentation procedures were performed in 107 patients (66 female: 52.8 ± 11.0

Sinus augmentation using rhBMP-2/ACS in a mini-pig model: relative efficacy of autogenous fresh particulate iliac bone grafts.

BACKGROUND: Implant dentistry in the posterior maxilla often requires bone augmentation. The gold standard, autogenous bone graft, requires additional surgery with associated morbidity, while bone biomaterials may not support relevant bone formation. Recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) in an absorbable collagen sponge (ACS), however, induces significant, clinically relevant bone formation in several settings including the maxillary sinus floor. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to compare local bone formation and osseointegration following maxillary sinus augment

Osteotome sinus floor elevation and simultaneous placement of implants--a 1-year retrospective study with Astra Tech implants.

BACKGROUND: The bone support for implants in the posterior part of the maxilla is often poor. This condition may be treated with augmentation of the maxillary sinus floor. The most common technique used is to elevate the sinus floor by inserting a bone graft through a window opened in the lateral antral wall, although less invasive techniques with osteotomes have been used since 1994. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiographic outcome of implants placed in the posterior maxilla with the osteotome sinus floor elevation (OSFE) technique without grafting. Schneider membrane elevation in presence of sinus septa: anatomic features and surgical management.

Maxillary sinus floor elevation via a lateral approach is a predictable technique to increase bone volume of the edentulous posterior maxilla and consequently for dental implants placement. The sinus floor is elevated and it can be augmented with either autologous or xenogeneic bone grafts following an opening bone window created on the facial buccal wall. Maxillary septa are walls of cortical bone within the maxillary sinus. The septa shape has been described as an inverted gothic arch arising from the inferior or lateral walls of the sinus and may even divide the sinus into two or more cavit

Safety and Efficacy Results of BonoFill First-in-Human, Phase I/IIa Clinical Trial for the Maxillofacial Indication of Sinus Augmentation and Mandibular Bone Void Filling.

PURPOSE: The gold standard for bone regeneration of bone deficiencies is still an autologous bone graft, which has considerable disadvantages; namely, the need for a second major surgery and the limited volume of bone available for harvesting. BonoFill (BF) is a novel, tissue-engineered, bone graft with intrinsic osteoinductive, osteoconductive, and osteogenic properties, consisting of the patient's own adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells, attached to hydroxyapatite particles. Here, we present the safety and efficacy results of BF first-in-human clinical study for maxillofacial bone

Bioresorbable versus titanium space-maintaining mesh in maxillary sinus floor elevation: a split-mouth study.

Maxillary sinus pneumatization limits implant placement in the edentulous posterior maxilla. Grafted sinus floor augmentation through Schneiderian membrane elevation and space obliteration with autogenous bone grafts, bone substitutes, or a combination of the two has often been used to resolve this problem. More recently, non-grafted sinus floor elevation has been established. This is based on the concept of membrane elevation and support either by tenting technique or using space-maintaining mesh. The aim of this study was to evaluate the predictability of new bone formation after sinus floor…

Radiographic assessment of maxillary sinus membrane and lateral wall thickness using cone-beam CT in different facial types in southwestern Saudi Arabia.

The anatomy of the edentulous posterior maxilla and maxillary sinus possess unique challenges in implant dentistry. The purpose of this study was to assess maxillary sinus membrane thickness (MT) and lateral wall thickness (LWT) in different facial index profiles and to describe the clinical implications. A retrospective image analysis of 75 CBCT scans was done, which yielded a total of 150 sinus images. The facial index was calculated as per the formula given in the text and grouped as euryprosopic, mesoprosopic and leptoprosopic. The images obtained were of 36 women (48%) and 39 men (52%), w

Histomorphometric and Micro-CT Evaluation of Cerabone and Bio-Oss in Maxillary Sinus Lifting: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

Background and Objectives: The loss of teeth in the posterior maxillary region often leads to significant alveolar bone resorption and maxillary sinus pneumatization, complicating dental implant placement. Maxillary sinus grafting, typically using autogenous bone, is a common solution. However, autogenous bone grafts require additional surgical procedures, leading to increased morbidity. This study aims to compare the efficacy of two xenografts, Bio-Oss and Cerabone, in promoting new bone formation in maxillary sinus grafting through histomorphometric analysis and micro-computed tomography (mi
