STUDY OBJECTIVES: To establish the prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in patients with spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid (sCSF) leaks and demonstrate the reliability of home sleep apnea testing (HSAT) to screen for OSA in this population.
METHODS: A literature review was performed to assess data on OSA prevalence in sCSF leaks. An institutional retrospective review was performed of 20 patients with sCSF leaks who met inclusion criteria. Patients without prior sleep studies were prospectively administered sleep studies, either HSAT or polysomnogram (PSG).
RESULTS: Twenty patients met t

BACKGROUND: Patients with obstructive sleep apnea ascending to high altitude are known to experience worsening of sleep-disordered breathing, often with an increase in central events. However, the management of a full phenotypic shift from mild obstructive sleep apnea to severe central sleep apnea at altitude remains poorly characterized.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 44-year-old Han Chinese man with symptomatic mild obstructive sleep apnea (apnea-hypopnea index: 11.4 events/hour) well-controlled on continuous positive airway pressure at low altitude. Upon ascent to Lhasa (3650 m),

BACKGROUND: Home sleep apnea testing (HSAT) underestimates obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) severity. Overnight oxygen desaturation has been shown to be a strong predictor of incident stroke, and may be helpful in determining which patients with lower apnea-hypopnea indices (AHIs) should be offered treatment.
OBJECTIVES: To examine whether a modified definition for OSA that uses oxygen desaturation (i.e., AHI 5-14.9 per hour and lowest O2 desaturation ≤88%), as compared to an AHI ≥ 15 per hour, would impact: (1) changes in Epworth Sleepiness Scale scores post-continuous positive airway pressure

A few reports have shown that cardiac valve repair may improve central sleep apnea (CSA) in patients with valvular heart disease. It has been suggested that such improvements are associated with the improvement of cardiac function. We report the case of a 67-year-old man with mitral regurgitation, whose CSA converted to predominant obstructive sleep apnea following mitral valvuloplasty in association with a shortening of lung-to-finger circulation time.

BACKGROUND: Anesthetics, analgesics, and surgery may profoundly affect sleep architecture and aggravate sleep-related breathing disturbances. The authors hypothesized that patients with preoperative polysomnographic evidence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) would experience greater changes in these parameters than patients without OSA.
METHODS: After obtaining approvals from the Institutional Review Boards, consented patients underwent portable polysomnography preoperatively and on postoperative nights (N) 1, 3, 5, and 7 at home or in hospital. The primary and secondary outcome measurements w

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and sleep bruxism (SB) are both sleep-related conditions that may affect sleep architecture and potentially contribute to daytime sleepiness (DS). AIM: This study aimed to explore the association between SB and DS as measured by Epworth Sleepiness Scale in patients with OSA. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 345 patients diagnosed with OSA. The presence of SB was assessed through multidisciplinary clinical examination and audio-video recordings during polysomnography. DS was measured using the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). Demo

STUDY OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare the clinical characteristics of two types of positional obstructive sleep apnea (POSA) in children: supine dominant OSA (spOSA) and supine isolated OSA (siOSA). The goal was to investigate the differences in sleep structures between the two groups.
METHODS: A total of 384 children with OSA were included. Children with POSA were categorized into two subgroups: siOSA for those with a non-supine AHI <1, and spOSA for those with a non-supine AHI ≥1. Clinical characteristics and polysomnographic features were compared between the two groups.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a well-established risk factor for hypertension, with sleep duration being a modifiable factor influencing this risk. However, sleep misperception among OSA patients makes it unclear how subjective and objective sleep duration are associated with the prevalence and incidence of hypertension in this population. This study aims to examine these associations using data from the Sleep Heart Health Study cohort. Participants with OSA (apnea-hypopnea index ≥ 15 events/hour) were categorized based on objective sleep duration from polysomnography (PSGTST) and subjectiv

INTRODUCTION: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is linked to increased cardiovascular and metabolic risks. Although body mass index is a recognized risk factor, the roles of fat mass, muscle mass, and hydration status in influencing OSA severity and sleep architecture remain unclear. This study examined the associations between body composition and apnea-hypopnea index, sleep efficiency, and sleep stages across sex, age, and BMI strata.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, data from 5,381 adults undergoing overnight polysomnography and bioimpedance analysis were analyzed. Multiva

INTRODUCTION: Sleep disorders are common yet often underdiagnosed in children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). These disturbances can exacerbate ADHD symptoms and negatively affect cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functioning. This study aimed to describe the prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and other sleep disorders in children with ADHD using standardized diagnostic criteria and to identify associated clinical and behavioral factors.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 629 children aged 6-12 years (mean age: 7.8 ± 1.5 years) who were diagnos

Impairments of the sleep architecture due to disrupted sleep in individuals with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) may result in reduced slow wave sleep (SWS), intermittent hypoxemia, and excessive day time sleepiness- all factors that have been shown to impact Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk. In this commentary, we comment on the work by Cavuoto and colleagues in which they examine the associations between nocturnal hypoxemia or sleep disruptions (during SWS) and amyloid-β burden in individuals with OSA. We review the findings in the context of other similar studies and highlight the strengths and

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is linked to the emergence and progression of cardiovascular complications including hypertension, stroke, arrhythmias, coronary artery disease, and heart failure. Epidemiological studies have reported that hypertension is associated with respiratory events during REM sleep. We examined the relationship between respiratory events during REM and morning and evening hypertensive blood pressure (BP) levels in a clinical sleep population.
METHODS: This study included data from in-laboratory diagnostic polysomnographic studies (n = 797) from adults a

PURPOSE: Overweight and obese children have demonstrated reduced rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, affecting energy balance regulation and predisposition to weight gain. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a known cause of decreased REM sleep. The purpose of this study is to examine the association between the percentage of REM sleep, BMI z-score, and OSA severity in overweight and obese adolescents.
METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study of 92 (43% female) overweight and obese adolescents (13-17 years old) who underwent overnight polysomnography (PSG) at Children's Hospital Los Angeles bet

STUDY OBJECTIVES: The severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is known to vary according to sleep stage; however, the pathophysiology responsible for this robust observation is incompletely understood. The objective of the present work was to examine how ventilatory control system sensitivity (i.e. loop gain) varies during sleep in patients with OSA.
METHODS: Loop gain was estimated using signals collected from standard diagnostic polysomnographic recordings performed in 44 patients with OSA. Loop gain measurements associated with nonrapid eye movement (NREM) stage 2 (N2), stage 3 (N3), and

Because the impact of periodic limb movements in sleep (PLMS) is controversial, no consensus has been reached on the therapeutic strategy for PLMS in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). To verify the hypothesis that PLMS is related to a negative impact on the cardiovascular system in OSA patients, this study investigated the basal autonomic regulation by heart rate variability (HRV) analysis. Sixty patients with mild-to-moderate OSA who underwent polysomnography (PSG) and completed sleep questionnaires were analysed retrospectively and divided into the PLMS group (n = 30) and the non-PLMS group (n

Periodic limb movements (PLM) and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) are two frequent sleep disorders which often occur in the same patient. The goal of this study was to know the influence of the presence of PLM in the sleep architecture in patients with and without OSAS. Two hundred twenty consecutive patients (69 women and 151 men) participated in this transversal study. They were patients with clinical suspicion of dysomnia, including snoring, OSAS, and PLM. All of them underwent a full polysomnography and were interviewed using questionnaires about the sleep quality. The sleep parame
