Snakebite envenoming is one of the most significantly neglected tropical diseases in the world. The lack of diagnosis/prognosis methods for snakebite is one of our motivations to develop innovative technological solutions for Brazilian health. The objective of this work was to evaluate the protein and metallic ion composition of Crotalus durissus terrificus, Bothrops jararaca, B. alternatus, B. jararacussu, B. moojeni, B. pauloensis, and Lachesis muta muta snake venoms. Brazilian snake venoms were subjected to the shotgun proteomic approach using mass spectrometry, and metal ion analysis was p

A 12 yr old dachshund, a 7 yr old English springer spaniel, and a 1.5 yr old French bulldog presented following envenomation by a coral snake. Each patient displayed evidence of varying degrees of lower motor neuron dysfunction, but all three developed transient megaesophagus. Two patients developed secondary aspiration pneumonia, with one requiring mechanical ventilation, which the owners declined, resulting in euthanasia. The third developed hypoventilation without aspiration pneumonia, was mechanically ventilated, and was successfully weaned. In the two surviving patients, the megaesophagus

In addition to blunt and sharp trauma, animal-related fatalities may result from envenomation, poisoning, anaphylaxis, asphyxiation, and sepsis. Although the majority of envenomation deaths are caused by hornets, bees, and wasps, the mechanism of death is most often anaphylaxis. Envenomation resulting from the injection of a poison or toxin into a victim occurs with snakes, spiders, and scorpions on land. Marine animal envenomation may result from stings and bites from jellyfish, octopus, stonefish, cone fish, stingrays, and sea snakes. At autopsy, the findings may be extremely subtle, and so

Snakes of the families Viperidae and Elapidae are responsible for the high incidence of morbidity and mortality after snake bites in countries of West Africa, the Indian subcontinent, South-East Asia, New Guinea and Latin America. Envenoming can cause local effects, notably tissue necrosis; and systemic effects, including paralysis, haemostatic disturbances, shock, increased capillary permeability, myocardial damage, rhabdomyolysis and acute renal failure. Specific hyperimmune serum (antivenom) is the mainstay of medical treatment for severe envenoming. Ancillary treatments such as assisted ve…

INTRODUCTION: Russell's viper is a commonly encountered venomous snake in India. Morbidity and mortality following envenomation and the treatment thereof are frequent. We report a rarely seen complication after a treated Russell's viper bite.
CASE REPORT: A 36-year-old male farmer received 30 vials polyvalent anti-snake venom after a viper bite to his right leg. Improvement in initial hematemesis and circulatory shock was followed by acute renal failure managed with regular hemodialysis. He displayed no abnormalities on neurological examination at admission. Fourth day onwards his neurologic

The surgical approach to snake bite lesions remains controversial. As a rule surgery is not recommended. However, the attitude towards severe local effects of envenoming should be revised and treatment made more aggressive, as our case report illustrates: following envenoming by Naja nigricollis, progressive necrosis jeopardized not only the function but also the survival of the hand. In view of this observation, we believe that a restrictive attitude is debatable. At first, immediately after the bite, splinting of the upper extremity is necessary, the hand being in intrinsic-plus position. Cl

BACKGROUND: A minority of snake envenomations in the United States involve non-native snakes. In this report, we describe what we believe is the first documented human envenoming from an emerald horned pitviper, Ophryacus smaragdinus.
CASE REPORT: A previously healthy 36-year-old woman was bitten on her left index finger by a captive emerald horned pitviper she was medicating at work. Swelling to the entire hand was present on emergency department arrival. She had no systemic symptoms and her initial laboratory studies were unremarkable. The affected limb was elevated. We administered five vi

Ninety-one cases of snakebite were admitted between January 1998 and January 2001 to the general hospital at Mahad, 180 km south of Mumbai in western Maharashtra, India. Twenty-nine (31.9%) patients, when admitted to hospital, brought the snakes responsible for the bites (20 kraits, 9 Echis carinatus). Forty-five (49.5%) patients had snakebite without envenoming; 27 patients had local fang marks without local and systemic manifestations; 18, reporting 24 h after the bite, had local oedema. Twenty-six (28.6%) patients were paralyzed. Twenty-five cases who reported between midnight and 08:00 sho

BACKGROUND: Snake bite is a neglected public health issue in many tropical and subtropical countries of the world. About 5.4 million snakebites occur each year, resulting in 1.8 to 2.7 million cases of envenomation yearly. Hepatic markers have been reported to rise 3-6 hours after injection of venom in experimental animals. This study aims to biochemically assess ALT, AST and GGT levels as biomarkers of Echis ocellatus envenomation in victims of snake bite presenting at JUTH Comprehensive Health Centre Zamko 6hours post-bite and compare with values in those bitten by non-venomous snakes.

OBJECTIVES: Snakebite usually results in various complications, such as significant soft tissue damage, infection, hematological, and neurological deficit. Surgical intervention, usually, is indicated in patients with tissue necrosis, infection, and compartment syndrome. To identify the contributing factors for complications and outcomes in different patients with snakebite so that outcomes can be evaluated and treatment of such patients can be initiated at the earliest.
METHODS: Information was collected regarding age, sex, underlying disease, species of snake, and the course of treatment of

Snake bite is a significant public health concern, particularly in tropical regions. Individuals who are bitten by neurotoxin snake commonly present with ptosis, ophthalmoparesis, muscle weakness, and diminished or absent of deep tendon reflexes. However, accurately determining the occurrence of a snakebite can sometimes be challenging, potentially leading to misdiagnosis. We present the case of a 2-year-old boy with sudden cardiac arrest. Following a brief resuscitation, he had return of spontaneous circulation. Despite normal electroencephalography results, the patient continued to have abse

The development of the taipan antivenom in Australia is a unique story, centred in Far North Queensland. It is infused with idealism and heroism. The taipan is one of the world's deadliest snakes. A live specimen of the coastal taipan was not captured until 1950, and the antivenom only became available in 1955. Until then a bite from the coastal taipan was universally fatal. Kevin Budden a snake enthusiast was bitten in the process of capturing the specimen. Budden extracted a promise from those around him that the snake would not be killed but be sent to the Commonwealth Serum Laboratories in

INTRODUCTION: Envenomation by poisons of biological origin is very common globally in the tropical and subtropical areas mainly, where the biological diversity of the species clearly leads to evolution of highly toxic species. The weather warming trend in Bulgaria, whether cyclic or permanent, allows for a change in the biological response of reptiles and insects inhabiting the temperate zone by a possible migration of biological species from the subtropical zone towards the temperate zone because of the new environmental conditions. There are very few studies on snake bite envenoming in Bulga

In the present article, two cases of envenomation by Rhabdophis subminiatus are reported, including a detailed analysis of the toxicological mechanisms, clinical manifestations, and therapeutic management, along with a systematic review of globally reported cases of Rhabdophis subminiatus envenomation. Both patients (both male, aged 58 years and 55 years, respectively) sought medical treatment several days after being bitten on the hand and developed life-threatening consumptive coagulopathy and hemorrhagic diathesis. The 58-year-old patient (Case 1) presented with local swelling, pain, abdomi

Single-domain antibodies (sdAbs) hold promise for developing new biopharmaceuticals to treat neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), including snakebites, which are severe and occur frequently. In addition, limitations of conventional snakebite treatments, especially in terms of local action, and the global antivenom crisis incentivize the use of this biotechnological tool to design next-generation snakebite antivenoms. Conventional antivenoms for snakebite treatment are usually composed of immunoglobulin G or F(ab')2 fragments derived from the plasma of immunized animals. sdAbs, the smallest anti

Successful snakebite envenoming (SBE) treatment requires safe, effective, and quality-assured antivenom products specifically tailored to combat endemic venomous snake species. This study aims to identify the challenges associated with the availability, accessibility, and use of antivenoms for treating SBE. The data for this study were obtained from a cross-sectional study involving healthcare workers from two districts (namely Afram Plains North and Afram Plains South) in the Eastern Region of Ghana. Through the MaxDiff design methodology, we quantify the challenges associated with the availa
