Psychosocial Issues Related to Speech and Hearing in Patients With Clefts.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with cleft lip and palate often face persistent challenges related to speech and hearing disorders, impacting various aspects of their lives. These challenges can lead to additional mental health issues such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, anxiety, and depression, as well as heightened psychosocial challenges, including appearance-related issues, bullying, workplace discrimination, and impaired social interactions. Children and adolescents with these disorders commonly experience loneliness, peer rejection, and challenges in forming friendships, particula

Social Dysfunction and Apathy: Transdiagnostic Domains in Late-Life Cognitive Disorders.

Social dysfunction is a maladaptive process of coping, problem solving, and achieving one's goals. A new definition of apathy was cross-linked to social dysfunction, with a reduced goal-directed behavior and social interaction as a separate dimension. We hypothesized that these two neuropsychiatric symptoms may be included in the mild behavioral impairment diagnostic framework, operationalizing and standardizing late-life neuropsychiatric symptom assessment, to improve risk determination of dementia. Social dysfunction and apathy were transdiagnostic and prodromic for late-life cognitive disor

[Malnutrition and social isolation among elderly residents of city public housing].

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to examine relations between malnutrition and social isolation among elderly residents of a city public housing facility. METHODS: The present participants were 442 residents aged 65 and older of a public housing facility in Nagoya city. An anonymous self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted regarding demographics, nutritional status, and social isolation. Nutritional status was evaluated using the Mini Nutritional Assessment(®)-Short Form (MNA(®)). Combining "at risk for malnutrition" and "malnutrition," the status was classified into two grou

Come together: human-avatar on-line interactions boost joint-action performance in apraxic patients.

Limb apraxia (LA) is a high-order motor disorder linked to left-hemisphere damage. It is characterized by defective execution of purposeful actions upon delayed imitation, or verbal command when the actions are performed in isolated, non-naturalistic, conditions. Whether interpersonal interactions provide social affordances that activate neural resources different from those requested by individual action execution, which may improve LA performance, is unknown. To fill this gap, we measured interaction performance, behavioral and kinematic indexes of left-brain damaged patients with/without LA

The effect of online social support on experimental pain.

Ample evidence shows that in-person social support can alleviate both acute and chronic pain complaints. However, less is known about the effectiveness of online social support. Disparities in availability of and access to in-person social support could make online social support a promising and cost-effective alternative. To this end we aimed to compare the effects of online versus in-person social support on pain induced with a cold-pressor task (CPT). Specifically, 62 pain-free female participants immersed their feet in cold water (1) alone, (2) in the physical presence of a supportive othe

Examining the impact of online rejection among emerging adults with borderline personality pathology: Development of a novel online group chat social rejection paradigm.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by emotional reactivity and interpersonal sensitivity, including greater emotional and cognitive reactivity to social rejection than controls. However, existing social rejection paradigms are not relevant to the particular social contexts that are increasingly relevant for adolescents and young adults (i.e., social media and online settings). This study examined emotional, parasympathetic, and cognitive responses to a novel online group chat social interaction task among emerging adults (18-24 years old) with a range of BPD pathology. Using delay discounting to understand impulsive choice in socially anxious individuals: failure to replicate.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Impulsive choice that follows transient anxiety responses is a potentially important outcome that may underlie maladaptive behavioral patterns that co-occur with high levels of social anxiety. However, little research has examined impulsive choice in relation to social anxiety. Rounds, Beck and Grant (2007; Behavior Research and Therapy, 45, 729–735) found that high social anxiety was associated with impulsive choice using a delay discounting procedure, but only in a non-threatening (control) condition, but several procedural confounds in that study may also explain

Psychosocial health needs of mediterranean vulnerable migrants settling in Europe: A systematic review of contributing factors.

BACKGROUND: Irregular migration via the Mediterranean Sea has risen significantly in recent years, with approximately 353,300 migrants entering Europe in, 2023 alone. Mediterranean migrants, often fleeing conflict, persecution, or extreme poverty, face multidimensional vulnerabilities throughout the migration journey, including pre-migration trauma, perilous transit conditions, and post-migration challenges like social exclusion, poor living conditions, and limited access to healthcare. These factors collectively impair their psychosocial health, defined as the dynamic interplay between psycho

Biased perception and interpretation of bodily anxiety symptoms in childhood social anxiety.

Cognitive models of social phobia (SP) and empirical evidence in adults suggest that affected individuals overestimate arousal symptoms such as heart rate (HR) during social stress and worry about their visibility in public. To date, little is known about these aspects in childhood social anxiety, an important precursor of the disorder. We assessed perception of--and worry about--HR visibility, actual HR, and subjective anxiety during public speaking in high socially anxious (HSA; n = 20) and low socially anxious (LSA; n = 20) Caucasian children, aged 10 to 12 years. Symptom visibility was man

Social Determinants of Health, Genetic Susceptibility, and Risk of Dementia: A Prospective Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: The association between social determinants of health, genetic susceptibility, and dementia risk remains unclear. This study investigates their relationship and the potential mediation by chronic conditions. METHODS: Data from 225,598 UK Biobank participants (220,847 for genetic analyses), with an average age of 55.07 years and 51.10% female, were analyzed. The data were collected during 2006-2010 and analyzed in 2025. Social determinants of health scores were weighted, combined, and categorized, and a polygenic risk score for dementia was constructed. Associations were assessed

A comparison of students with learning disabilities to low achieving and higher achieving students on three dimensions of social competence.

Research continues to accumulate attesting to the fact that many children with learning disabilities are experiencing social difficulties in school. Nonetheless, it is also clear that achievement deficits, with or without the presence of a handicapping condition, are also related to social problems in the classroom. Several studies attempting to clarify the relative roles of handicapping condition and achievement in social adjustment have produced mixed results. The purpose of the present study was to clarify this issue further by examining the social differences between elementary school stud

Biased information-seeking and information-integration in social anxiety.

Social anxiety is associated with an intense fear of social evaluation and rejection, often leading to avoidance behaviors and distress. In this review, we summarize the current understanding of how various cognitive biases may lead to the development and maintenance of social anxiety. While early models of social anxiety have focused on negative biases in perception, attention, memory and emotion regulation, more recent literature has started to characterize biases in information-seeking and information-integration, especially in the context of self-referential information and social feedback

Effects of standard and explicit cognitive bias modification and computer-administered cognitive-behaviour therapy on cognitive biases and social anxiety.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This study examines the effects of a single session of Cognitive Bias Modification to induce positive Interpretative bias (CBM-I) using standard or explicit instructions and an analogue of computer-administered CBT (c-CBT) program on modifying cognitive biases and social anxiety. METHODS: A sample of 76 volunteers with social anxiety attended a research site. At both pre- and post-test, participants completed two computer-administered tests of interpretative and attentional biases and a self-report measure of social anxiety. Participants in the training conditions c

Social desirability and alexithymia.

We examined the influence of alexithymia on social desirability among 215 Japanese college students. Alexithymic-scoring students who showed a lack of communicating their feelings to other people were likely to indicate higher scores on hostility and lower scores on social desirability. The scores on hostility were negatively correlated with those on social desirability. Recent studies have shown that alexithymia is positively correlated not only with neurotic and psychotic conditions but also with neuroticism. Unfavorable expression of hostile feelings by alexithymic-scoring students may be r

Indifference of marmosets with prenatal valproate exposure to third-party non-reciprocal interactions with otherwise avoided non-reciprocal individuals.

Autism is characterized by deficits in social interaction and social recognition. Although animal models of autism have demonstrated that model animals engage less in social interaction or attend less to conspecifics than control animals, no animal model has yet replicated the deficit in recognition of complex social interaction as is seen in humans with autism. Here, we show that marmosets discriminated between human actors who reciprocated in social exchanges and those who did not; however, marmosets with foetal exposure to valproic acid (VPA marmosets) did not. In the reciprocal condition,

Processing of facial affect under social threat in socially anxious adults: mood matters.

BACKGROUND: An important function of the human face is to communicate approval or disapproval toward others. Because socially anxious individuals are overly concerned about disapproval by others, it has been hypothesized that those individuals are faster at processing negative, specifically angry facial expressions than nonanxious individuals, especially under conditions of social threat. METHOD: To test this hypothesis, 25 socially anxious individuals and 24 nonanxious controls were asked to classify facial expressions associated with anger, sadness, fear, disgust, happiness, and surprise. Effects of Social Acknowledgment and Interpersonal Shame on Complex Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms of Sexual Violence Survivors in South Korea.

Sexual violence (SV) survivors face negative social reactions, which can affect their recovery. Based on the socio-interpersonal model of trauma, understanding how societal circumstances impact SV survivors' mental health is important. This study examined conditional indirect effects of interpersonal shame and social acknowledgment on the relationship between perceived SV event severity and complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) symptoms. Cross-sectional data from 157 community-based adults who had previously experienced SV were collected from an online panel. Exploratory factor analys

Self-focused attention vs. negative attentional bias during public speech task in socially anxious individuals.

Enhanced self-focused attention (SFA) and negative attentional bias (NAB) towards social cues are characteristic hallmarks of social anxiety. It is essential to investigate these two attentional phenomena under socially relevant situations using comparable stimuli. In the present study, individuals with high social anxiety (HSA, n = 32) and low social anxiety (LSA, n = 29) were compared according to their attention toward self-related stimuli and toward positive, neutral, and negative feedback related stimuli. Video stimuli of moving indicators of self-anxiety-status and positive, neutral, and

Hypnotherapy modulating early and late event-related potentials components of face processing in social anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Hypnotherapy has a potential role in modulating attention bias to treat social anxiety disorder (SAD). This study aimed to verify whether hypnotherapy can reduce social anxiety by changing attentional bias. The primary objective of our study is to explore the influence of hypnosis on various aspects of attention processes, specifically focusing on how it affects attention bias and social anxiety. METHODS: This study included 69 participants with SAD who were assigned to three groups based on their scores on the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS). The experimental group (n = 23)

Temporal sociomedical approaches to intersex* bodies.

The history of the field of intersex bodies/bodies with variations of sex development (VSD) reflects the ongoing tension between sociomedical attempts to control uncertainty and reduce the duration of corporeal uncertainty by means of early diagnosis and treatment, and the embodied subjects who resist or challenge these attempts, which ultimately increase uncertainty. Based on various qualitative studies in the field of intersex, this article describes three temporal sociomedical approaches that have evolved over the last decade and aims to address the uncertainty surrounding intersex/VSD bodi
