Clinical outcomes associated with depression, anxiety and social support among cardiac rehabilitation attendees.

OBJECTIVE: To utilize existing medical record information in order to examine the relationship between depression, anxiety, levels of social support and clinical outcomes in cardiac rehabilitation attendees. METHOD: In a tertiary care centre 389 records for cardiac rehabilitation outpatients were analysed. Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scales scores collected at week 4 of their cardiac rehabilitation programme were linked with medical record information on demographic, lifestyle, medical and other coronary heart disease risk factors, as well as follow-up cardiovascular events and readmissio

'MMR talk' and vaccination choices: an ethnographic study in Brighton.

In the context of the high-profile controversy that has unfolded in the UK around the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine and its possible adverse effects, this paper explores how parents in Brighton, southern England, are thinking about MMR for their own children. Research focusing on parents' engagement with MMR has been dominated by analysis of the proximate influences on their choices, and in particular scientific and media information, which have led health policy to focus on information and education campaigns. This paper reports ethnographic work including narratives by mothers in

Piloting home telepresence to support social connectedness among older adults in remote Irish communities.

BACKGROUND: Social support and social connectedness are key components of social health in later life, with reduced support linked to loneliness, social isolation, and adverse health outcomes. These challenges are intensified in remote and offshore communities, where geographic barriers limit social interaction and service access. In Ireland, nearly one in three adults over 50 experience emotional loneliness. While ICT-based interventions show promise, evidence for scalable, context-appropriate solutions remains limited. This study examines the feasibility and acceptability of a user-centred h

Affective dynamics and emotional reactivity in social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Although heightened anxiety associated with social interaction or evaluation is the core diagnostic criterion for social anxiety disorder (SAD), there is growing evidence that SAD is characterized by more pervasive reactivity beyond social situations. We employed Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) to describe the affective dynamics and emotional reactivity to daily events in a community-based sample of adults with SAD compared with other anxiety disorders, and controls without anxiety or mood disorders. METHODS: A sample of 236 adults with a lifetime diagnosis of SAD (n = 53),

"Everyone Saw Me Differently Like It Was My Fault or I Wanted It": Acquaintance Stalking Victim Experiences of Sexual Assault, Sexual Harassment, and Sexual Autonomy.

Although the stalking research literature has grown over time, there is more limited research focused on acquaintance stalking victim experiences and harms. The current study used online surveys with women stalked by acquaintances who had (n = 193), and who had not (n = 144), been sexually assaulted by the stalker to examine differences in stalking course of conduct (including jealousy and control, sexual harassment) and victim harms (resource losses, social identity perceptions, sexual autonomy, sexual difficulties, and safety efficacy). Results found that many of the acquaintance stalking vi

For Praise or Money: The Impact of Different Types of Symbolic Rewards on Selective Attention.

Previous research has confirmed the effect of monetary reward on selective attention, but the influence of social reward has yet to be fully investigated. To address this issue, we employed a modified two-rectangle paradigm paired with the monetary incentive delay task or social incentive delay task. In this paradigm, reward cues were implemented symbolically and were not linked to performance-based rewards. In Experiment 1, the relative value of monetary reward diminished object-based attention without affecting space-based attention (SBA). In Experiment 2, the stability of the SBA effect was

Self-other referential neural processing in social anxiety disorder and major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are highly comorbid and share impairments in self-referential and social processing. Many naturalistic judgements activate these processes concurrently, which can be referred to as "self-other referential processing". We sought to examine its neural correlates in young people with SAD and MDD using a novel experimental task. METHODS: Fifty six young people aged 16 to 25 with diagnoses of SAD and/or MDD (15 with SAD [M = 20.3 years, 60% female], 17 with MDD [M = 19.8 years, 53% female], 24 with comorbid SAD and MDD [

Social science research in malaria prevention, management and control in the last two decades: an overview.

In the recent past, considerable progress has been made in understanding how human behavior and social organization, macro- and micro-level economic processes, and health and political systems affect responses to malaria at global, national, community, household, and individual levels. Advances in malaria-related social, behavioral, economic, evaluation, health systems, and policy (social science) research have resulted in improvements in the design and implementation of malaria prevention, management and control (PMC) strategies. Indeed, the past two decades chronicle dramatic advances in the

Social support as a moderator in the relationship between intrusive thoughts and anxiety among Spanish-speaking Latinas with breast cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Intrusive thoughts, defined as unwanted and recurrent thoughts about a stressful experience, are associated with psychological distress in women with breast cancer. This study assessed moderating effects of various social support dimensions on associations between intrusive thoughts and psychological distress among Latina breast cancer survivors. METHODS: We used baseline data from a randomized controlled trial of a stress management intervention delivered to 151 Spanish-speaking Latinas with nonmetastatic breast cancer within 1 year of diagnosis. Intrusive thoughts, four dimension

The impact of intranasal oxytocin on attention to social emotional stimuli in patients with anorexia nervosa: a double blind within-subject cross-over experiment.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Social factors may be of importance causally and act as maintenance factors in patients with anorexia nervosa. Oxytocin is a neuromodulatory hormone involved in social emotional processing associated with attentional processes. This study aimed to examine the impact of oxytocin on attentional processes to social faces representing anger, disgust, and happiness in patients with anorexia nervosa. METHOD: A double-blind, placebo-controlled within-subject crossover design was used. Intranasal oxytocin or placebo followed by a visual probe detection task with faces depicting an

Social Media Versus Customized Mobile Apps for Online Perinatal Mental Health Support: The Potential for a Hybrid Model.

A recent participatory co-design study for a social media-based mental health intervention targeting perinatal women in regional, rural, and remote communities identified five core intervention needs: peer support and connection, personalized care, access to information that is trustworthy and eases uncertainty, place and culturally specific support, and a digital platform that is accessible and easy to use. This commentary argues that digital platform selection should be addressed as an active intervention component. A hybrid model that uses the built-in user base and accessibility of social

Empirical examination of the interpersonal maintenance model of anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: A cognitive interpersonal maintenance model of anorexia nervosa (AN) was first proposed in 2006 and updated in 2013 (Schmidt and Treasure, J Br J Clin Psychol, 45, 343-366, 2006; Treasure and Schmidt, J Eat Disorders, in press.). The aim of this study was to test the interpersonal component of this model in people with AN requiring intensive hospital treatment (inpatient/day patient). METHOD: On admission to hospital women with AN or eating disorder not otherwise specified (AN subtype; n = 152; P) and their primary carers (n = 152; C) completed questionnaires on eating symptoms (P)

Domestic violence against single, never-married women in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

This study examines the association between decision-making power, with other background variables, and domestic violence against single, never-married women in the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT). Secondary analysis using data from a 2006 Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics domestic violence survey revealed that decision-making power and age were significant predictors of physical and psychological abuse. Relation to household head, refugee status, education, employment, and locality were not significant; region was only significant for psychological abuse. Further studies are neede

Psychological factors associated with emotional responses to receiving genetic risk information.

This study identified levels of distress, and predictors of levels of distress, in women undergoing assessment for genetic risk of breast/ovarian cancer based on their family history. It comprised a cohort study following 154 women who completed questionnaires at entry into a cancer genetic assessment programme and following risk provision. Independent significant associates of anxiety following risk provision were age, neuroticism, feeling hopeless about developing cancer, a perceived lack of control over developing cancer, lack of a social confidant, and a coping response involving acceptanc

Cerebellar contributions to tau-mediated cognitive and behavioral dysfunction.

Dementia is characterized by loss of cognitive function, social deficits, and emotional impairment and is prevalent in tau-mediated disorders. However, the mechanisms underlying this cognitive and behavioral dysfunction remain uncertain, as phenotypes do not necessarily correlate well with the presence of tau pathology. Here, we identify critical roles for the cerebellum in regulating cognition and behavior in a tauopathy mouse model. We find that social and fear memory deficits emerge much later than tau pathology and that cerebellar Purkinje cell (PC) dysfunction coincides with the onset of
