We examined three cognitive processes hypothesized to contribute to biases in judgments about and memory for social events: self-focused attention, post-event rumination, and anticipatory processing. Socially anxious (N = 58) and nonanxious (N = 58) subjects participated in a social interaction and then completed measures of self-focused attention and anxiety-related physiological sensations and behavior. The next day, subjects completed measures that assessed frequency of post-event processing and recall of the interaction. The results indicated that selective attention to negative self-relat…

This study reports on a patient with spinal cord injury (SCI) in whom the interaction between social skills and social support seems to influence functioning. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) was used as a reference framework. Qualitative (i.e. observation, structured, and open interviews with the patient and health professionals) and quantitative data (i.e. spinal cord independence measure, medical records) were collected. Content analysis of the interviews was carried out to identify aspects of social skills and social support. An ICF-based documen

Human interaction is intrinsically multimodal, in that it unfolds across different kinds of behaviors (or modalities). However, many researchers have found it difficult to systematically investigate the richness of multimodal communication due to its theoretical and technical complexity. To help overcome some of the technical hurdles, we introduce an open-source single-platform solution: the MultiSOCIAL (Multimodal timeSeries Open-SourCe Interaction Analysis Library) Toolbox. The Toolbox enables any researcher who has video files to extract time-series data in three modalities: body movement t

Humans are inherently social beings. Being suggestible to each other's expectations enables pro-social skills that are crucial for social le … nd representations of social norms. This is again associated with self- and other-perception during social interactions as well as value-based decision-making that guides our behavior in daily interactions. We highlight the critical role of 5-HT in these processes and suggest that 5-HT can facilitate social learning and may represent an important target for treating …

Amid rising adult ADHD diagnoses in recent decades, this article introduces a cultural ecosocial niche theory of adult ADHD, suggesting that symptoms emerge within specific cultural and social contexts rather than solely from neurobiological differences. Through in-depth interviews with seven Australian women recently diagnosed with adult ADHD, complemented by photo-voice methodology, we show how ADHD symptoms fluctuated markedly across different social interactions. The study found that participants actively construct and inhabit cultural ecosocial niches where their traits achieve a function…

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Motivated by their fear of disapproval, individuals with social anxiety continually monitor their own behaviour during social interactions hoping to prevent dreaded negative outcomes. Ironically, they do evoke less positive reactions from others. This study investigated whether lower engagement in the interpersonal process of joint action by socially anxious individuals leads them to attract less positive ratings by their conversation partners.
METHOD: High socially anxious (HSA; N = 36) and low socially anxious individuals (LSA; N = 36) had separate conversations w…

Social interactions form key developmental cues for plasticity in the vertebrate brain. However, few experimental studies disentangle specific aspects of sociality, such as social interactivity, in this context. Here we tested the role of social interactivity in shaping brain development in juvenile guppies (Poecilia reticulata), a social species with high potential for post-birth neuroplasticity. Fish were reared under one of three conditions: (i) interactive live social exposure to conspecifics, (ii) non-interactive screen-based social exposure to prerecorded conspecifics or (iii) minimal so…

BACKGROUND: Characteristics of parent-child interaction (PCI) early in life have been associated with later development in the child. Twin studies can help to disentangle child contributions to parent-child interaction, for example, by assessing the influence of the child's genetics on his/her social environment, which includes parental behaviour.
METHODS: Infant twins from a community sample [354 monozygotic (MZ), 268 same-sex dizygotic (DZ)] were assessed in terms of PCI at age 5 months. We used the classical twin design to map the aetiology of several parent and child PCI scales and their

Autism is characterized by deficits in social interaction and social recognition. Although animal models of autism have demonstrated that model animals engage less in social interaction or attend less to conspecifics than control animals, no animal model has yet replicated the deficit in recognition of complex social interaction as is seen in humans with autism. Here, we show that marmosets discriminated between human actors who reciprocated in social exchanges and those who did not; however, marmosets with foetal exposure to valproic acid (VPA marmosets) did not. In the reciprocal condition, …

Social frailty, along with physical and psychological frailties, is one of the components of frailty that has been reported to increase the incidence of adverse health outcomes. Although the prevalence of social frailty is relatively high, consensus on how to define and measure it is insufficient. In considering social frailty, living alone, interaction with neighbors, and social participation are important indicators, and interaction with neighbors and social participation, which are modifiable factors, are important countermeasures. The promotion of these social activities will contribute to

OBJECTIVES: The present research examined how gender influences Black and Latine individuals' anticipated experiences in interracial interactions and same-race interactions.
METHOD: Three experimental studies (N = 1,202) were conducted. In Studies 1A and 1B, Black (S1A: Mage = 30.34, 59% women) and Latine (S1B: Mage = 27.90, 51% women) adults imagined an interaction with either a White man or a White woman. In Study 2 (N = 372), Black and Latino men (Mage = 34.35) anticipated an interaction with a White man, a White woman, a Black or Latino man, or a Black or Latina woman. After, we assessed

PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare health-related quality of life (HRQOL) for elderly men and women in three mutually exclusive living arrangements: living alone, living only with spouse, and non-empty-nesters. It also examined whether such living arrangements and other factors relating to social interaction have an independent influence on HRQOL after controlling for other variables.
METHODS: The data were drawn from China's 4th National Household Health Survey (NHHS) conducted in 2008. The final sample included 9,711 urban elderly people of 60 years and above. The EQ-5D inventory was used…

Social anxiety and eating disorders are highly comorbid. However, it is unknown how specific domains of social anxiety relate to disordered eating. We provide data on these relationships and investigate social appearance anxiety and fear of negative evaluation as potential vulnerabilities linking social anxiety with disordered eating. Specifically, we examined five domains of social anxiety: Social interaction anxiety, fear of scrutiny, fear of positive evaluation, fear of negative evaluation, and social appearance anxiety. Results indicated that social appearance anxiety predicted body dissat…

Autistic children have difficulty communicating wants, needs, and thoughts. In cases of low functioning autism, an individual can have serious speech and language disabilities. In response to the need of parents and therapists dealing with autistic children, social robots have been developed and incorporated into assisting children with autism. Research studies have proved the possibility of improving autistic children's lives using social robots. However, not any social robot can successfully fulfil this task, since autistic children are sensitive to certain behaviours, shapes, and colours. T

Neuropsychiatric (depression, schizophrenia, etc.) and neurological disorders (Alzheimer's disease, AD, Parkinson's disease) are characterized by disruptions in cognition including social interaction and recognition. Developing tools for the assessment of social behaviour in mouse models and its relevance is essential to further advance our understanding of social impairments in these diseases. In the Agora maze for rodents, stranger mice confined into cubicles around the perimeter of the open square mirror the agora (marketplace) in ancient cities. While we know childhood experiences are influential on a child's later socioemotional awareness and behavior, we are still searching for specific mechanisms that influence the transferability of childhood experiences and adult relationship functioning. In this study, we seek to further this area of investigation by examining the interpretation of ambiguous social interactions and perceptions of emotional invalidation as potential mediators of the relationship between perceptions of childhood emotional invalidation and current relationship quality. Participants completed online measures of host…

Neonatal handling is an early-life intervention known to produce long-lasting reductions in emotional reactivity and physiological responses to stress in rodents. Although its effects on social behavior remain less well characterized, previous studies have shown that neonatal handling enhances juvenile play behavior, suggesting broader effects on the social behavioral repertoire. The present study examined whether the social effects of neonatal handling observed in younger animals persist into adulthood by assessing social interaction in 10-month-old rats. Social interaction was quantified as …

Social problems are an important feature of the preterm behavioral phenotype but are diverse and multidimensional. A model of social competence comprised of the three interrelated components of social cognition, social interaction, and social adjustment is useful in conceptualizing these problems. Weaknesses in social cognition in very preterm (VPT) children, although rarely studied, are found on tasks involving interpretation of social cues. Difficulties in social interaction in VPT infants and young children are documented by structured observations of their interactions with adults. Problem…

The N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) has been implicated in the pathophysiology of neurological diseases, such as schizophrenia, autism spectrum disorders (ASD), and Alzheimer's disease (AD), whose unique clinical hallmark is a constellation of impaired social and/or cognitive behaviors. GluN3A (NR3A) is a unique inhibitory subunit in the NMDAR complex. The role of GluN3A in social behavioral activities is obscure. In this study, we sought to evaluate altered social activities in adult GluN3A knockout (KO) mice. GluN3A KO mice spent less time in reciprocal social interaction in the social…
