Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities in Dermatology.

Health disparities are differences in health or disease incidence, prevalence, severity, or disease burden that are experienced by disadvantaged populations. Their root causes are attributed in large part to socially determined factors, including educational level of attainment, socioeconomic status, and physical and social environments. There is an expanding body of evidence documenting differences in dermatologic health status among underserved populations. In this review, the authors highlight inequities in outcomes across 5 dermatologic conditions, including psoriasis, acne, cutaneous mela

Course of social functioning after remission from panic disorder.

While symptom status and social functioning have been observed to be correlated in many cross-sectional studies, little is known about the time course of change in functioning after a change in diagnostic status. Using data from a large longitudinal study of anxiety disorders, we present analyses of the time course of seven domains of social functioning up to 18 months before and after remission from panic disorder with or without agoraphobia. The effect of remission from panic disorder varies by domain. Four domains show a change in outcome, usually positive, after remission. The presence of

Investigating social determinants of child health and their implications in reducing pediatric traumatic injury: A framework and 17-year retrospective case-control study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic physical injuries are the number one cause of hospitalization and death among children in Canada. The majority of these injuries are preventable. The burden from injury can be reduced through prevention programs tailored to at-risk groups, however, existing research does not provide a strong explanation of how social factors influence a child's risk of injury. We propose a theoretical framework to better understand social factors and injury in children and will examine the association between these social factors and physical traumatic injury in children using large pop

Risk factors for suicidal ideation among the older people living alone in rural region of China: A path analysis.

In China, suicide accounts for twenty-six percent of all suicides worldwide; however, researches on the suicidal ideation among older people living alone in the rural region are few. We performed a cross-sectional study to explore the prevalence and influence factors of suicidal ideation, and provide a theoretical basis for suicide prevention among older people living alone in rural region.695 older people living alone in rural region were selected by using stratified cluster sampling. Chi-square for categorical variables, T-test for continuous variables, and path analysis were conducted to st

Influence of Social Determinants of Health on Treatment Completion for Pediatric Mild Traumatic Brain Injury in a Safety Net Hospital.

The negative impact of the Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) on health care outcomes in vulnerable populations, particularly pediatric patients, is a well-established phenomenon. The treatment of traumatic brain injury is not an exception. It is not clear, however, which specific social determinants of health factor is more influential on the current management of traumatic brain injury in these populations. This study addresses this gap by exploring how these factors influence the treatment of traumatic brain injuries in pediatric patients at Boston Medical Center, a safety net hospital in

Social participation as a mediator of the relationships of socioeconomic factors and longevity after traumatic spinal cord injury.

STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study. OBJECTIVE: Previous research has indicated that socioeconomic factors affect longevity after traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI). Our purpose was to evaluate whether social participation mediates the relationship between socioeconomic factors and survival status after SCI. SETTING: Medical university in the southeastern United States. METHODS: Participants (N = 1540) met the following inclusion criteria: traumatic SCI of at least 1-year duration, minimum of 18 years of age, and having residual impairment from SCI. The main outcome measures were a) survival status

The technology-dependent child and the socially marginalized family: a provisional framework.

The aim of the grounded theory investigation described in this article was to begin to develop an explanatory model of the transition of tec … onceptually relevant literature; and other published documents. Early findings indicate that family social status is a category that can account for significant variation both before and after discharge. Theoretical relationships between family social status and two of the emergent concepts, moral distress and social trajectory, are presented here.

Age differences in the context of climate change: Does exposure to a fake consensus statement make a difference?

The present study examined whether people of different age groups respond differently to a true versus fake consensus statement concerning climate change. In total, 309 participants were randomly exposed to a true consensus statement about climate change and 311 were exposed to a false statement. Subsequently, respondents were asked to respond to items about attitudes, feelings, and behavioral intentions concerning climate change. Compared with younger people, older persons are significantly more concerned about climate change, more likely to report that climate change is real and more willing

The Health Needs of Regionally Based Individuals Who Experience Homelessness: Perspectives of Service Providers.

The bidirectional relationship between homelessness and poor health and the barriers that individuals who experience homelessness face when trying to access healthcare are well documented. There is, however, little Australian research exploring the situation of individuals who experience homelessness in regional contexts and, moreover, from the perspective of service providers. A qualitative descriptive methodology underpinned this study, with in-depth semi-structured interviews being conducted with 11 service providers to identify barriers to care faced by people who experience homelessness a

Cognitive bias modification training of attention and interpretation to reduce expectations of social rejection in adolescents with eating disorders: A small efficacy randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate whether a computerized cognitive bias modification training delivered remotely would reduce expectations of rejection in adolescents with eating disorders. METHOD: Sixty-seven adolescents aged 12-18 (99.5% female) with an eating disorder diagnosis (94% anorexia nervosa) and receiving specialist treatment were recruited. Participants were randomized to an intervention condition (n = 37) which included treatment as usual (TAU) supplemented by nine sessions of online cognitive bias modification training for social stimuli (CBMT + TAU), or a control cond

Socioeconomic Position and Late-Onset Dementia: A Nationwide Register-Based Study.

OBJECTIVES: Previous research on the association between socioeconomic position (SEP) and dementia has not sufficiently accounted for the complex relationship between education and occupation. We investigated the independent and joint effects of educational attainment and occupation-based SEP on dementia. METHODS: We used register-based information about educational attainment, occupation-based SEP, and dementia from 1,210,720 individuals. Information about cognitive ability at conscription was available for a subsample of men. RESULTS: When mutually adjusted, lower educational attainment an

Divorce, health, and socioeconomic status: An agenda for psychological science.

This brief review article discusses marital dissolution and health with a focus on two specific themes. First, we introduce and discuss the search for plausible causal pathways that link the end of marriage to distal health outcomes. Second, we suggest that the socioeconomic status disruptions that follow divorce represent a plausible causal pathway and emphasize the need for more psychological science in this area of study. Although there is substantial literature that demonstrates that divorced adults, especially divorced women, experience significant financial disruptions, the research in t

29 recommendations to combat social inequalities in health. The Norwegian Council on Social Inequalities in Health.

All political parties in Norway agree that social inequalities in health comprise a public health problem and should be reduced. Against this background, the Council on Social Inequalities in Health has taken action to provide specific advice to reduce social health differences. Our recommendations focus on the entire social gradient rather than just poverty and the socially disadvantaged. By proposing action on the social determinants of health such as affordable child-care, education, living environments and income structures, we aim to facilitate a possible re-orientation of policy away fro

Social intervention and the elderly: a randomized controlled trial.

A randomized controlled trial was set up in 1985 to test the effect of social intervention over 3 years among elderly people, aged 75 and above, living alone. The sampling frame was the age/sex register of a large group practice of 12 general practitioners serving the town of Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, England, with a list size of approximately 32,000 patients. A total of 523 elderly people living alone in 1985 were identified, interviewed, and randomized into experimental and control groups. A lay worker offered the experimental group (n = 261) individual packages of support that aimed a
