Oxytocin and vasopressin in the hippocampus.

Oxytocin (OXT) and vasopressin (AVP) are related neuropeptides that exert a wide range of effects on general health, homeostasis, development, reproduction, adaptability, cognition, social and nonsocial behaviors. The two peptides are mainly of hypothalamic origin and execute their peripheral and central physiological roles via OXT and AVP receptors, which are members of the G protein-coupled receptor family. These receptors, largely distributed in the body, are abundantly expressed in the hippocampus, a brain region particularly vulnerable to stress exposure and various lesions. OXT and AVP h

Assessment of structured socioeconomic effects on health.

Social epidemiologists study effects of variables such as education or income on health outcomes. Because other factors may influence both the exposure and the outcome, adjustments are commonly made in an effort to estimate the "independent" effect of exposure. The validity of common adjustment strategies when estimating the outcome distribution under hypothetical interventions of the exposure is potentially compromised by structured relations between covariates, observed and unobserved. These considerations of covariate structure may be particularly important for the study of "distal" socioec

Psychometric properties of an innovative self-report measure: The Social Anxiety Questionnaire for adults.

This article presents the psychometric properties of a new measure of social anxiety, the Social Anxiety Questionnaire for adults (SAQ), composed of 30 items that were developed based on participants from 16 Latin American countries, Spain, and Portugal. Two groups of participants were included in the study: a nonclinical group involving 18,133 persons and a clinical group comprising 334 patients with a diagnosis of social anxiety disorder (social phobia). Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses supported a 5-factor structure of the questionnaire. The factors were labeled as follows: (1)

Social networks, time homeless, and social support: A study of men on Skid Row.

Homeless men are frequently unsheltered and isolated, disconnected from supportive organizations and individuals. However, little research has investigated these men's social networks. We investigate the structure and composition of homeless men's social networks, vis-a-vis short- and long-term homelessness with a sample of men drawn randomly from meal lines on Skid Row in Los Angeles. Men continuously homeless for the past six months display networks composed of riskier members when compared to men intermittently homeless during that time. Men who report chronic, long-term homelessness displa

Social Relationships and Tooth Loss in Adults Aged 60 Years and Older: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically assess current evidence on the extent to which social relationships are associated with tooth loss in adults aged 60 years and older. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted on PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, CINAHL and The Cochrane Library databases to identify relevant studies published from 1966 up to March 2024. Cross-sectional or cohort studies investigating the association between structural, functional and/or combined (structural and functional) components of social relationships and the number of remaining teeth or edentulism among community-

Mapping Research Domain Criteria using a transdiagnostic mini-RDoC assessment in mental disorders: a confirmatory factor analysis.

This study aimed to build on the relationship of well-established self-report and behavioral assessments to the latent constructs positive (PVS) and negative valence systems (NVS), cognitive systems (CS), and social processes (SP) of the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) framework in a large transnosological population which cuts across DSM/ICD-10 disorder criteria categories. Challenges in HIV prevention and treatment among men who have sex with men in China: structural exclusion, healthcare inequity, and testing avoidance.

Men who have sex with men (MSM) in China face a high burden of HIV infection. While biomedical interventions are crucial, technology alone cannot explain the challenges of AIDS prevention and treatment in this group; deeper social structural factors need urgent attention. This study analyzes the ways that structural barriers, through the national policy system and structural stigma, affect the HIV prevention and treatment behaviors of MSM in China. We reviewed central-level academic and policy documents and analyzed the data using NVivo 12. We then integrated the research results from these do

Associations of family health and perceived social support with health literacy among middle-aged and older adults with chronic diseases: a mediation and network analysis.

Family and social contexts may play important roles in health literacy among middle-aged and older adults with chronic diseases. This study examined the associations among family health, perceived social support, and health literacy and explored their overall and dimensional relationships using mediation and network analyses. Data were obtained from 1,444 participants in the 2021 Psychology and Behavior Investigation of Chinese Residents. Family health, perceived social support, and health literacy were assessed using the Family Health Scale Short Form, Perceived Social Support Scale, and Heal

Amygdala functional connectivity is associated with social impairments in preterm born young adults.

Survivors of preterm birth experience long-lasting behavioral problems characterized by increased risk of depression, anxiety, and impairments in social functioning. The amygdala is a key region for social functioning and alterations in amygdala structure and connectivity are thought to underlie social functioning deficits in many disorders, including preterm birth. However, functional connectivity of the amygdala and its association with social impairments is not well-studied in preterm participants (PTs). In a group of late adolescents born very PT (600-1250 g birth weight), measures of soci

Loneliness, not isolation, is the missing link between social connectedness and mental health among midlife to older U.S. adults.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether loneliness or social isolation serves as the main pathway connecting social connectedness dimensions to mental health outcomes among midlife to older adults. METHODS: We examined longitudinal data from 4,963 adults aged 40-65 at baseline in the U.S. national MIDUS study (2004-2014). Social connectedness was assessed across six areas: neighborhood social cohesion, social integration, family support, friend support, social contribution, and community contribution. Loneliness and social isolation (contact frequency) were measured at baseline; psychological dist

Social Anxiety in Autistic People: Does the Clark and Wells Model fit?

PURPOSE: Cognitive behaviour therapy based on the Clark and Wells (1995) model is a first-line treatment for neurotypical people seeking support for social anxiety. While autistic people frequently report high social anxiety, it is unclear how appropriate the model is for this population. METHODS: Over 300 autistic and non-autistic adults completed an online survey measuring key variables of the Clark and Wells model (socially-related negative thoughts, safety behaviours, self-focused attention). Using multiple regression and structural equation modelling, we assessed whether these variables

"It's the worst bloody feeling in the world": Experiences of loneliness and social isolation among older people living in care homes.

Loneliness and social isolation in later life result in social exclusion, reduced well-being, and significant health problems. Yet, we have a limited understanding of the meanings that older people ascribe to loneliness and social isolation, and how they live through and cope with these issues. The scarce research on the topic largely reflects the experiences of older people living in the community. Less is known about the lived experiences of those in institutionalized settings, despite this group's vulnerability to loneliness and social isolation. To address this gap, we conducted a six-mont

Engagement of Social Support Systems in Patients Being Considered for and Following Advanced Heart and Lung Surgical Therapies: An ISHLT Expert Consensus Statement.

Social support systems, particularly caregivers, play a critical role in the evaluation, treatment, and recovery of patients undergoing heart or lung transplantation or left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation. However, definitions, assessment practices, and expectations for social support vary considerably across programs, and evidence guiding optimal caregiver engagement remains limited. This International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation expert consensus statement summarizes current evidence and provides recommendations for assessing, engaging, and supporting social supp

Exploring structural violence in the context of disability and poverty in Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: While it is widely assumed that disability, poverty and health are closely linked, research falls short of fully understanding the link. One approach to analysing the links between disability and poverty is through the concept of structural violence, referring to social structures that contribute to the impoverishment of individuals or communities. These structures can be political, ecological, legal and economic, among others. OBJECTIVE: To explore structural violence and how it affects families of children with cerebral palsy among the Tonga ethnic group living in poor rural com…

Toward Inclusive Social Cognition Assessment: Validating a Unified Battery for Hearing and Deaf Children.

The Social Cognition Battery (SCB) was validated as an inclusive tool for assessing social cognition (SC) in hearing and deaf children, addressing cross-cultural gaps. Participants included 154 hearing (M age = 8.10, SD = 1.56) and 30 deaf children (M age = 9.80, SD = 1.97) from Latin America. Exploratory Factor Analysis revealed a unifactorial SC structure (RMSEA = 0.069, CFI = 0.962) with high reliability (ω = 0.753). Age predicted SC in hearing children, while school year better explained SC in deaf children. ROC analysis (AUC = 0.8126) confirmed strong discriminative ability. The SCB is a

The Teenage Brain: Under Construction.

Can sexual activity, alcohol and drug use, violent video games, pornography and other activities, including use of social media, damage adolescent minds? Early high-risk behaviors appear to have significant harmful effects on the brain's development. Evidence suggests that the hormones and neural patterns triggered may lead to addictive, and other high-risk behaviors, social withdrawal, and depression. Compounding these concerns are the immature decision-making processes during adolescence. Fortunately, parents can positively impact the brain development of adolescents as they assist in decisi

Autism spectrum disorder: does neuroimaging support the DSM-5 proposal for a symptom dyad? A systematic review of functional magnetic resonance imaging and diffusion tensor imaging studies.

A systematic review of 208 studies comprising functional magnetic resonance imaging and diffusion tensor imaging data in patients with 'autism spectrum disorder' (ASD) was conducted, in order to determine whether these data support the forthcoming DSM-5 proposal of a social communication and behavioral symptom dyad. Studies consistently reported abnormal function and structure of fronto-temporal and limbic networks with social and pragmatic language deficits, of temporo-parieto-occipital networks with syntactic-semantic language deficits, and of fronto-striato-cerebellar networks with repetiti

The role of friends, in-laws, and other kin in father-perpetrated child physical abuse.

Thirty-five physically abusive fathers were matched with a comparison sample to test multiple systemic explanations for child physical abuse, using an ecological perspective, and to show the relationship between the structure of social ties and the function of those ties. The physically abusive fathers were found to have received significantly fewer emotional and instrumental supports from their friends, in-laws, and other kin than the comparison fathers, and were only weakly linked to members of their social networks--members who might have discouraged the fathers' aggressive impulses or prov

Volumetric Comparison of Overall Brain and Neuropil Size Between Social and Non-social Spiders: Exploring the Social Brain Hypothesis.

The social brain hypothesis predicts that the relative size of specific brain regions is driven by the cognitive capacity required to manage complex (social) situations. Spiders are intriguing models to test this hypothesis, as sociality is rare in this usually solitary and aggressive group. Here, we used microCT to compare the central nervous system and brain volumes between social and solitary females of the species in two taxonomic groups, huntsman and crab spiders. Overall, we found no difference in relative CNS and brain volume between social and solitary species. However, social huntsman

Social Interpretation Bias in Children and Adolescents with Anxiety Disorders: Psychometric Examination of the Self-report of Ambiguous Social Situations for Youth (SASSY) Scale.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health problems in youth, and faulty interpretation bias has been positively linked to anxiety severity, even within anxiety-disordered youth. Quick, reliable assessment of interpretation bias may be useful in identifying youth with certain types of anxiety or assessing changes on cognitive bias during intervention. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the factor structure, reliability, and validity of the Self-report of Ambiguous Social Situations for Youth (SASSY) scale, a self-report measure developed to assess interpretation bias in
