Postnatal quality of life, depressive symptoms, and social support among women in southern India.

Evaluation of postnatal quality of life (QOL) has remained a poorly researched area in India. The present cross-sectional study assessed postnatal QOL, using the Mother Generated Index (MGI) and its associated risk factors, and was conducted during January-March 2013 among 274 mothers, 6-8 weeks postnatally. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to evaluate sociodemographic and obstetric characteristics and social support. Depressive symptoms were assessed by the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) and QOL using the MGI. The vast majority (90.1 percent) of respondents in our study had a pr…

Familial and social support as protective factors against the development of dissociative identity disorder.

The incidence of dissociative identity disorder (DID) is strongly correlated with exposure to serious physical and sexual abuse. Although st … ; G. Ladd & B. Golter, 1988). Recognition of the significance of secure attachment and familial and social support as protective factors against the development of DID suggests social intervention as an important area of research to mitigate the psychological consequences of insecure attachment, social disconnection, and abuse.

Coping strategies and social support as mediators of consequences in child sexual abuse victims.

OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this study was to evaluate the mediator role of coping strategies and social support on the adaptation of children following CSA. Empirical studies indicate that short-term consequences of child sexual abuse (CSA) are multiple and varied (Kendall-Tackett, Williams, & Finkelhor, 1993; Wolfe & Birt, 1995). While abuse-related characteristics were first studied to explain the variability of CSA outcome, more recently, the influence of other variables such as coping strategies and social support have been considered. METHOD: Fifty sexually abused children aged bet…

Stress appraisal and social support of Chinese mothers of adult children with mental retardation.

Thirty Chinese mothers of adult children with moderate to severe mental retardation were interviewed to explore the source and nature of their stress and social support. Results revealed child-related and parent-related stress specific to these mothers. The most common stressors were future planning and behavioral problems of the target offspring. Mothers received tangible, emotional, and informational support mainly from family members and training center staff. Some evidence was also found for the optimal-matching model of stress appraisal and social support. Regardless of the duration of st…

Mediating effects of family social support on child psychological adjustment in juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

This study assessed the mediating effects of social support on psychological adjustment in children having to cope with the ongoing chronic strain of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Disease activity, family social support, and peer social support were entered into hierarchical multiple regression analyses to statistically predict internalizing and externalizing behavior problems. Family social support was a statistically significant predictor of child psychological adjustment for both internalizing and externalizing behavior problems, accounting for 22% of the variance in each. These findings a…

Stress, appraisal, coping, and social support as predictors of adaptational outcome among dementia caregivers.

A stress and coping model was used to study predictors of individual differences in caregiver adaptation. A total of 54 family caregivers of elderly dementia patients completed interviews and questionnaires assessing the severity of patient impairment and caregiving stressors; caregiver appraisals, coping responses, and social support and activity; and caregiver outcomes, including depression, life satisfaction, and self-rated health. Correlational and regression analyses supported the utility of the stress and coping model. Appraisal, coping responses, and social support and activity were sig…

Latent classes of gaming disorder symptoms by gender: associations with problematic social media use, psychosomatic symptoms, bullying, and social support in adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Although significant gender differences exist in gaming disorder (GD), existing GD typologies among adolescents have provided li … ked to higher problematic social media use, psychosomatic symptoms, bullying involvement, and lower social support across both genders. CONCLUSIONS: The identified classes revealed similar symptom profiles between females and males. While moderate-risk and high-risk classes were more prevalent among males, the findings may also suggest a narrowing gender gap in …

Intranasal oxytocin enhances stress-protective effects of social support in women with negative childhood experiences during a virtual Trier Social Stress Test.

Oxytocin is considered a biological mechanism underlying stress-protective effects of positive social interactions. It is assumed to underlie the women-specific tend-and-befriend response to stress, although few studies have tested this assertion with female samples. The aim of the present study was, therefore, to test whether oxytocin enhances stress-protective effects of social support during stress in women, taking into account the moderating role of childhood adversity. The sample consisted of 180 female undergraduate students who had reported on experiences of childhood abuse and how ofte…

Network Characteristics of Social Support Sources for People Living with HIV Under Community Follow-Up: A Social Network Analysis in Luzhou, China.

For people living with HIV (PLWH), the configuration of social support networks may shape access to support, yet the structural position of support sources remains poorly understood. We conducted a cross-sectional study among 446 PLWH receiving community follow-up in Luzhou, China, from March to May 2023. A two-mode network (participants × 10 support-source categories) was analyzed in UCINET to describe support-source degree and core-periphery structure. Community Health Service Centers, hospitals, and family members occupied core positions. Overall support scores differed by gender (female vs…

Social strain and support as mediators in the relationship between childhood abuse and adult depression.

BACKGROUND: Childhood parental abuse is an essential risk factor for greater adulthood major depressive disorder symptom severity (MDDSS). However, the change mechanisms explaining the pathway from childhood maternal or paternal abuse (CMA or CPA) to adulthood MDDSS remain open to inquiry. We thus evaluated social support and strain from family, friends, and spousal/partner sources as plausible mediators in the pathway from CMA and CPA to adulthood MDDSS. METHOD: Community-dwelling adults were enrolled in a prospective study (N = 3294). Structural equation mediation modeling tested relationsh…
